Hes human, he doesnt understand this world, his sister is gone, his best friend left without an explanation and his mother is a mess, he just found out his gf is a vampire which he thinks is the reason vikki is gone. When i first watched the show i thought he was annoying like how he acted with caroline n elena but besides that weird storyline, when i matured i realized how accurate his character is for a human in a world like this where nothing is explained and all you get is pain and confusion. His hatred in the fandom is def exaggerated IMO, lots i feel are influenced to hate him immediately when they start the show. When you take a second to think about matt and what he goes through ALONE, makes u rethink. Now i will agree he has annoying moments but do i think he deserves the most hate out of ALL characters in the entire show? No. Def not with the rest of the characters in this universe.

at this point in the show matt is prob my least fav i just can't stand how he's been treating caroline. i mean his reaction to her being a vampire was expected but i hated that he automatically assumed she had something to do with vicky's death. and now he's lying to her to conspire with her own mother like what lol

As much as I didn't like Isobel, her death has always stuck with me even years after the show ended. There's just something about offing yourself in front of your estranged daughter that always fucked me up. Also at this point in the show I didn't dislike Matt, he was just useless therefore his scenes always felt pointless to me, lol.

I love how caring they make Elena. even though Isobel was terrible, Elena still garnered sympathy and was also willing to give John a shot. I also love the Klaus reveal in alaric. Also Matt is freaking annoying and he drags the show down lmao.

He couldn’t grieve his sister’s death properly not knowing what happened to her so hearing Caroline say she was a vampire and Vikki said she was attacked by one, his initial thought that she may have done something or was involved in her death is valid. He is confused, scared and genuinely alone in this discovery especially knowing his sister died to a vampire.

nah sorry i don’t think matt’s trauma justifies his accusing caroline of murdering vicky. if he had only accused her of knowing about it then that’s valid but immediately accusing her of doing it herself is crazy considering he KNOWS caroline loves him & would never hurt anyone he cared about. and then to go behind her back w her mom is just the cherry on top of him already gaslighting her multiple times in the past.

John is literally one of the more reasonable characters. Trying to kill vampires and also protect your daughter is not a bad thing lol. He’s sneaky but do you come out in the open and be like “yeah kid but you’re too caught up in this weird vampire mess” to your vampire obsessed daughter?

Isobel isn’t any different than Damon. If there’s sympathy for Damon then there should be for her. They are both monsters but there is no doubt that human Isobel loved Elena. Life got the best of her which I believe was her motivation to become a vampire. I don’t think she was a bad person but she was always looking for a place to belong. In the end, you can see that deep down, vampire Isobel cared for Elena as well but she was rejecting her humanity therefor rejecting Elena. Her actions before her death lets us into her psyche. Great reaction guys!

I don't like Uncle John at all, but I do find it weird how no one can give him empathy when they're much worse characters in this show. You can find him annoying, but I think where he's coming from isn't that unreasonable. Damon and Stefan are far from perfect. Them being with Elena doesn't change that.
