OK, the corpse the golem stepped on has been there a long time, but not millenia, given it still has an intact eye. The goggles might be modern but its hard to tell. Since Barraki had the place marked on a map and had his ancestor's tome, he probably had actually gone there. So I'm going to guess the golem, like the front door, recognizes people with magic ability as not-enemies.

That seems likely, though I doubt it was immediate since Barraki wouldn't want to trap himself up there before he learned to fly.

The golem is probably double-duty: defender and care-taker. I wonder if he will look and act like Kryten.... "Barraki - yes, he was a smeeeee heeeee."
