Ok...I told you this always happens when I say they're good...

One of my baby fish died today.

AND.

Three are missing.

MISSING.

How? Did the bigger ones, eat them? Is that possible? Surely they're not big enough to actually eat them whole.

What is this cruel world. Where have they gone?
I need a detective on the case.

Noooooo!!! Fish can be nasty mother frickers. Probably gulped the babies 😭

You mentioned one was not thriving and seemed undersized. Is this the unfortunate one? Is it possible they are hiding in the decorum? Could they have somehow slipped past the cover over the filter intake? You would have to internet search to see if that species of fish could eat something besides expensive fish food. Sorry, I feel like I jinxed it.

Sometimes there can be a sneaky hungry bobbit worm hiding in the fish tank that somehow got into it from rocks that will eat your fishies

I had a friend with a 100 gallon tank installed in the wall of his great room. He paid someone to professionally stock the tank with costly fish. All was well for a while, then fish began to disappear. He couldn't figure it out, but one day he caught the culprit in the act. A shrimp found its way into the tank, probably an egg hiding among other stuff, and it was living in a hiding place it found in the rocks or coral. He was furious that the stowaway was eating some expensive sea life.

Oh lord that's unfortunate, and really sad for the poor fish! There's nowhere for anything to hide in this tank now, I've left the plants to be free floating so I can see what's going on. When I actually look at the two big goldfishes mouths, they don't look large enough to just ingest their siblings. But maybe I'm wrong D:

Yeah that's the one :( I've had a look around and nothing. And the filter intake is covered with a sponge, then a filter media bag which is tied with a rubber band. So I wouldn't see how. That seems to be the only answer. But Google says goldfish aren't aggressive and won't each other. Mostly they do that just because they're going around and inhaling everything, that something small would make it's way in their mouth. Which I think is mostly what happens when the parents eat the young. Haha not at all!

I checked into this. From MyPetWarehouse.com: (quote) Goldfish by nature are not aggressive, and are not predatory. The short answer would be, "No, they don't eat each other". However, there are some circumstances where goldfish do eat each other. Goldfish tend to browse for food, eating mostly what are bite-sized morsels, of anything edible. But, if they happen to come across small fish (e.g. baby goldfish), they do not discern, and they will eat it if they can catch it. At breeding time, goldfish produce hundreds of sticky eggs. Goldfish exhibit no parental care, and they will graze on the eggs, regardless of whether it is theirs. Similarly, those eggs that survive and go on to hatch, the baby goldfish will continue to fall prey to anything that is larger - be it other goldfish, or insects (e.g. dragonfly larvae). Once goldfish are able to swim around, and are of adequate size (e.g. 2-3 centimeters), the rate of intra-specific predation drops dramatically. (unquote)
