Firstly it stands for Autonomous sensory meridian response. ''What on earth does that even mean?!'' Err, you can ask Wikipedia for the answer to that...BUT I can tell you what it does to the body, although sadly not everyone experiences it. I say sadly because it is a NICE sensation, so if you get it, just enjoy it! Basically it's a tingling sensation ranging anywhere from the scalp (where I get it) to down the back, though suppose you could get this feeling anywhere! ❀''This is some sexual fetish though, surely?'' NO. The majority of ASMR lovers don't watch these videos to get sexual pleasure from it. But let's face it, there are a large number that do. Us creators aren't clueless about this, I'm sure we just prefer not to think about it. While others take advantage of that. ❀So that brings me to the most COMMON question of people who don't understand ASMR: ''Why are you whispering/speaking so softly?'' Cause it's relaxing, duh :D There are so many things that can trigger ASMR, what one person may find tingly, another may find extremely annoying. Mouth sounds are a great example of this (slapping, chewing, crunching etc). You either love it or hate it. ❀More 'triggers': Whispering/speaking softly. Crinkling paper or a plastic bag, or anything else that crinkles! Page turning. Tapping wood, plastic, card...again pretty much anything that taps. Water sounds. Stroking stuff or rubbing sounds (Q tips along a mic for example) ❀Or visual stimuli: In real life I have experienced this through watching people clean (like dusting, polishing windows etc). The repetitive motion of the hands I suppose it is. So hand movements, finger fluttering. The sound and the movement of someone stroking the pages of a book as they turn. There are so so many, I couldn't possibly name them all without boring you to tears. So if you don't get ASMR, that's fine. But let the few of us that do enjoy it :D

Yay!!!!!

ASMR Attack / Shotgun mics ... getting a little militant, aren't we? If you fix bayonets to the microphone stands, should we begin to retreat? Hey, seriously, you deserve it.

If you have issues connecting things up let me know, I might be able to help.

Thank you, I actually just made a video with these. The mics weren't binaural even though I changed the channels to left and right. And when I lean back and talk further away from the mics I sound distant.

ladyasmr

I ordered the zoom H5, because that's what rapunzel asmr uses for her rodes. Hopefully this will deliver a better quality of sound and a louder sound. But because I can plus both mics into the one recorder, maybe that'll sort out the binaural aspect?

ladyasmr

Haha they do sound a little violent don't they :P No need to fear though, only tingles from these bad boys. :D Thank you :)

Should all be fine and properly binaural when you can connect both mics to the Zoom without any adaptor cables or such like. The Zoom tends to be pretty popular as a recorder so I reckon its a solid choice.

ladyasmr

I do hope so! Makes sense for it to be, the zoom recognises left and right after all.

I keep accidentally sending the message before I'm finished haha. Anyway, thank you for your help, we shall see how it goes when I get it :)

Watch this video. It is a magazine piece about ASMR, not an ASMR video. At 6:28 you can see Maria's setup. The key to good binaural sound is the placement of the mics. They need to be spaced the same as the average head, from ear to ear. There is also a directional component, but I'm not sure about that, exactly. Oooh that's really handy to see! I suppose if they are directed toward each other they might pick up sound from each other? Although I suppose that depends on how sensitive the mics are! Thank you for that :)

Lawrence Davis

No, you do not want them to pick up sound from each other. Each ear picks up its own sound, therefore so should the mics. The idea is to capture sound with mics in the same way that the ear does naturally. If your mics are omnidirectional then they pick up sound from all directions, therefore each will pick up the same sound. If the mics are unidirectional then they only pick up sound from the direction they are 'pointed to'. This is closest to the human ear. One possible way to do this is to place a baffle between the mics, as in this image: [ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jecklin_disk ] See if this helps, a tutorial for binaural recording with Rode mics: [ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJzmqrXKvcU ] A Wikipedia article about binaural recording: [ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binaural_recording ] The reason that the tutorial creator made the foam contraption was to keep the microphones the correct distance apart, and provide sound separation between the microphones in the same way a head does. It still isn't perfect because the ear form is missing. The ear form isn't used on expensive binaural sets so it looks like an ear, it is used to shape sound the same way a real ear does. What I think is more important: Maria isn't concerned about realistic binaural sound, she is concerned with professional sound. Her videos do not have that same 'walk-around / I'm on your left / now I'm behind you / now I'm on your right' effect, but they always sound great. Now yours will as well. Better quality microphones allow for crisp sound (the crinkles and taps sound clean, the voice can be a low whisper but still be heard clearly, etc.) You don't need the 3D sound to dazzle your listeners, just the best sound of you.
