You have to remember that at that time northmen were taught from an early age that the only way to get to Valhalla is to become a strong warrior and die with a sword in hand. They were never afraid of dying or wanting to go to war because in the end it would mean passage into Valhalla. And for people like Ari and others who live in this peaceful village without war it meant that he had no chance and no opportunities to achieve entrance to Valhalla.
