Some really good questions came up recently on my channel and on Twitter, and I wanted to take the opportunity to share some of my thoughts in a video here. These have been some very important things for me to learn :)

LGR - YouTubing Work vs. Home Life Balance

You had questions, I give answers! At least as it pertains to my current full-time YouTuber existence. Life is interesting, man. LGR Foods lives here by the way, haha: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCz9uUFDhsPYii-ZihoKsbPg/videos

Mate great video thank you for sharing. Once I get some debt down ( lol to many games on sale) I hope to pledge and help out. Love the nostalgia with all your content it's awesome :)

When I've telecommuted a in the past, working at home got a bit weird and lonely. I'm too asocial to work at home, I become like a hermit.

Anonymous

Heartfelt and thoughtful. Thank you for this, and it raises questions on how I approach things myself. If I can benefit from your experience that's even better! Regular work-life balance is hard, and adding youtube to the mix drives me nuts and I only output a video every month or so. Just like you I try to put in quality and research into them but man that takes time and effort. Time that often I borrow to future-me! So yeah, this video hits the spot, and thanks for putting it out there.

Again, thanks for sharing. Super interesting. You are a hero, Clint!

Hey Clint I think your doing an awesome job, and you know the folks who don't get it aren't your demographic. Take it slow, don't rush like you said regardless of how others do it. Keep plugging away at what you do man. There will always be more to do. Your channel and videos are freaking kick ass. They provide so much incite and clearly you are an expert at it all. LGR Forever!!!

Your health comes first! Although if you were to ever stop making these videos, I would be very sad. Also, you have a food channel?? Welp, I know what I'm watching tonight!

Thanks for sharing with us and letting us see the human side I think a lot of people forget exists. You have to always put yourself first and never neglect the people who care about you. Nothing is worth losing that over.

Great insights video, to me it shows the real man behind LGR. Keep it up Clint, you're doing the right thing in my book. Cheers mate! :)

This is a great video! I'm working on game development full time now ever since I've moved, and we've converted half the garage into an office space - it's really helped me immensely to have a separate space for my work. I've been keeping to a pretty rigid schedule, too, and I've gotten a lot more done in less time - I think part of what makes working from home in your relaxing space is that you always feel like you should be working when you're relaxing, and you always feel like you want to relax while you're working, and it ends up spoiling your work AND your relaxation. I'm glad to see it's made such a positive difference for you too!

I can empathize. It is difficult to explain to people why the separation must be so deliberate and complete. You are absolutely right in regard to "coming home". Self-employment, especially in varied or dynamic industries, can begin to severely compress one's life. Removing business operations from one's living quarters is one of the biggest steps toward being able to actually "leave work" and "go home". You've done a great job on LGR for long enough now to have endured a number of strong events and life changes during the series; and through any you may have encountered, LGR has remained LGR. That's professionalism in action, and so is how you're tailoring the business to work with you and not against you. Not everyone can examine the interaction of life and business with clarity while balancing plates with their nose pressed upon a grindstone. Your patience and dedication are strengths, and of course, this channel rocks. Incidentally, so does that food channel. I believe you actually have something there.

Great video, it's really interesting seeing how you work, where you work. I just love the channel, a few years ago a friend of mine recommended it and I just love your videos, your humour and it is really informative and interesting. Thank you Clint, you are awesome!

I really enjoyed this - from both a process setup, and just generally knowing that particular experience is something I've not gone through alone. Trying to kickstart my own independent stuff at home was draining, and being in a shared space really, really ate into it mighty quickly. Enough so that I found it wasn't feasible to keep at it (as I wasn't in a position to move for financial reasons) - and even though my present employer allows for remote working, I chose to work in the office specifically for those reasons. And some of it really, really, really is hitting home with other projects on the side as well. Funnily enough, I'd been doing a lot of work on a game (one of my side projects) for a showing at a convention - and really, getting into work a bunch earlier, and working nearby really, really helped me carve out a lot of things - instead of fretting about once I'd gotten home for the day. Whilst in a way, I'm not directly the target - hearing you talk about this stuff, did mean a lot.

I really appreciate this and it helps push me to continue following your YouTube footsteps. Keep it up bud

This video is a real credit to you, the ability to turn something dull into entertainment should confirm why you are so popular... I tend to dislike video's like this, normally skip over them... Glad I didnt...

It takes courage to put yourself out there; I appreciated watching this. Please continue to do whatever makes you happy. I can relate to working so much it consumes all aspects of one's life. That is a hard thing to realize and even harder routine to dig out of.

You are not allowed a home life! Only YouTube!! You only exist in the digital realm :)

Wait... Wait... Clint, you are an actual human being with real human needs? The illusion is broken!!! Just kidding, this was a very insightful video in your reality and it only made me appreciate your work even more (something I couldn't think could be possible).

This hit home for me. February was my first full month to be self-employed doing YouTube and I worked pretty much from 7:30 in the morning until bedtime every day. I was sooooo worried that I wouldn't make enough money to survive after quitting my job. And, I actually made quite a lot of money in February because I produced quite a bit of content. But there's just no way I could keep that up and keep my sanity. So come March, I decided to scale back and force myself to take a few hours each day to do something else. My income went down, but it's a small price to pay for my sanity. But I have another issue lingering.. which is storage area. My house is now overflowing with vintage electronics and I have nowhere to put any of it. It's starting to pile up in the floor in my living area. I'm finding it hard to justify a storage facility when I look at the value of the equipment and what the storage area would cost for a year. It's like buying a $30,000 garage to park a $5,000 car inside. But at the same time, I need to keep this equipment for upcoming videos. So.... arg... I can't decide what to do.

My co-host and I are making a go of becoming full-time car guys. This video and the last are really helpful and insightful, and they are much-appreciated. Thank you for talking candidly about maintaining work-life balance when your passion becomes your career.

Totally hear you, David. I know we've chatted about it some before, but I still recommend an off-site rental solution if you can afford it and if it's one that's well-suited to old electronics, especially since it can be claimed as a business expense so that helps soften the blow. Heck, even if it was just a nice shed behind my house that would've helped me. Made a night and day difference to me. Wishing you the best!

I'm glad you found a way to achieve work/life balance. I started a company out of my apartment about 12 years ago and until I started renting an office I had no idea how crazy it had made me. Fortunate for me I was surrounded by loving people who could see past my disorganized chaotic state. Now I have replaced that chaos with a new level of disorder which is 3 wonderful children. The need to maintain a healthy work/life balance is much more crucial and I value things like a quiet space that I can work and leave so much more. I'm happy to be a supporter of your channel regardless of how many buildings it takes :) keep it up but also know that you don't owe myself or any of your viewers anything.

Thank you for letting us in on more of how you get your work done, I can safely say anyone supporting you can see the amount of time and effort you put into every video and I can only imagine the amount of digging you have to do for your history videos. I don't have space for old electronics but LGR has made so many of us appreciate them.

Your line of work takes a ton of heart, and I'm extremely impressed at how well you've been able to hold it together all these year. Great job as always, Clint and I hope the new slew of youtube problems won't affect you.

You mean you exist as a human being who uses your talents to earn an income and the not to exist to pleasure the internet Gestalt? I may have to bump up my monthly pledge. ☺

Lots of respect for you man, separation of work and life is very important. I am passionate about technology and in my 20s used to work crazy hours and would play with tech at home all the time. Nowadays, I turn off the tech at home and leave it at work. It has greatly improved my health and quality of life. Take care of yourself, I will continue to support you as I love your shows.

Great video. Keep up the good work, and I'm glad you've set up a balance between home life and work. Btw, think every self employed/business owner constantly has thoughts of "I have no idea what I'm doing" as you joked about, but as a long time viewer I can tell you that whatever you're doing it's working well!

Clint .. I've been subscribed for you channel for few years now and a happy patreon for few months and I honestly can say your content did indeed got much better, even your face looks much better than before .. happy and not tired. The new series like LGR thrifts, techtales and fan mails are really a nice addition to your content. Im glad you sorted your work/home issue and in my opinion separating work from business is a professional move. Im happy for you and always remember got your back. PS: Your food channel is aweosme!

Anonymous

Oh yeah, one more thing to contribute to the food channel: have you tried the Indomie Mi Goreng instant noodles or the Maggi Masala noodles? Both are pretty good.

Clint, I definitely hear you on the work vs life balance when it comes to YouTube, I have tried to do the same with the SP1SC, failed miserably, then started to re-boot everything, and changed a lot of things over as I changed the name to "The Sanctuary" with the idea of a Patreon member and friend. I moved from Virginia last July back to Philadelphia where I am from, and ditched the home for a simple 415 sq ft apt. I am in the process of moving an enormous PS1 collection to a new home in 2018 while balancing so many things. I worked myself so hard that I nearly ruined myself with the channel when I was worried about why there was absolutely no Patreons for well over 1 year. I have been a subscriber of yours for a very very long time, darn near a decade when I ran the Lancaster City Dragonrats Channel that went from super popular to dead on a moments notice because of a slave driving company I worked for, wasted 5 years of my life with them, and ruined a chance to make something incredible. I have definitely debated the storage facility bit going as far as nearly moving it all to Tokyo, Japan but decided against it as I was not going to be back there after 2013 until June of this year. Keep up the good work, and if you are looking for anything to cover if you ever go back to PS1 videos let me know! Jimmy

Clint, Hi mate (said the Australian). I just wanted to comment on the part in the video when you were talking about mental health. I had anxiety disorder / PTSD for a long time. Took years to finally get mentally healthy. This was caused by a number of factors, but in brief my father died, I was homeless, I had a number of friends die (heart attack, suicides, cancer), I was beaten up. I eventually got healthy and started working full time. Even went back to university. Then I found out I have a terminal brain tumor. Life expectancy in 2014 was 2-5 years. This puts me in a very unique position. I can compare horrible mental health, to terminal cancer. If I had to choose, I'd rather have the terminal cancer. The anxiety disorder / PTSD was far harder than my cancer. And that's not because brain tumors are fun happy games, but it just shows how horrible the mental health stuff was. So, if you've gone through rough times and gotten (or are getting) better, then I hope you realise just how amazing that is. It's a hard battle and it takes a lot to come through, much less make a youtube video talking about it. I hope this comment helps you. And for that matter, Pushing Up Roses as well, because I know she's dealt with similar and she's a friend of yours. Best of luck and take care.

First time watcher-I'm not into PC gaming but I am into retro gaming (maybe you figured that out) and work-life balance is a very important part of my life too. The life part is all about my wife & kids. I'm also not doing this full time yet so prioritization and time management are so important. Oh yea, and the having fun thing and not getting burned out-that's important too. Thanks for the video!

Just thanks for everything man. Appreciate it! :-)
