EDIT: I've added another minute of talking points to clarify some of the performance issues and also took the opportunity to add a joke or two.

Star Wars DroidWorks: Robot Abomination Simulator

Lucas Learning's first edutainment game from 1998! Nobody needed to see what it'd look like if beloved Star Wars droids had a terrifying lovechild together, but here you can. Shame that it's also a bit broken.

They had this at my after school place, there was that one kid who was hella cool and did the actual missions and everyone else just played the testing room looking for "secrets" and making weird droids. I'm glad to see it finally covered :D

I'd love to see a new Droidworks in Unreal Engine 4, or Unity, even. These games always show promise, but end up ruined because of stupid bugs, but more recent engines show some real promise. Just look at Besiege.

The Force is not strong with this one it would seem :( Which is a shame - the engine jank would be 'forgivable' had they built a new engine, but being based on Jedi Knight's is a bit of a shame - I don't remember any jank there. Otherwise, it might actually have been a rad edutainment piece (though I would have been too old when it originally came out anyway…)

Great video. What was the deal with getting it to work on the iMac?

Thanks! I never had problems running it on my Bondi G3 with 64MB RAM, but it seems there were enough users on 32MB machines having problems that they included that red slip of paper to tell them to enable virtual memory.

Yeah it's an unfortunate set of issues with this one, really holds it back from being a timeless edutainment classic

Would you believe this game won NUMEROUS educational awards? I'm trying to figure out how... especially considering most school computers at the time wouldn't've been powerful enough to run this and most parents with powerful-enough computers would've already been buying non-educational games. :P

AHHH SO MUCH HOLO MY EYES But I see the Star Wars video was timed for Star Wars Celebration this week (and 40 years of Star Wars)! Good timing is good. Too bad this game has glitches up the wazoo...

i assume this was never fixed in any ports? gog perhaps?

Would've loved this as a kid. I can imagine just making up my own stories and building your own droids! what more could a young 90's kid ask for?

I love the Jedi Knight/Mysteries of the Sith engine. I did so much editing of the .cog files back in the day so that you could play as different characters in the single player. The graphics have certainly aged, but it has a place in my heart.

ahhaaha this video was hilarious!!! xD

Love it! I grew up playing this game on our Mac. I wonder if those glitches of going up ramps and such were still there on the Mac version? I know you mentioned you tried the game on different systems, but did you have a Mac to try it on?
