So as someone who's never played Yakuza yet, should I play this first and then 1-5? That's the impression I got.

Totally up to you! But yeah, it's a good starting point. I actually started with 4 though and had a great time. Most of the game's stories are pretty self-contained, and they feature story cinematics to catch you up if needed.
