EDIT: Added another two minutes of footage starting at 43:37! I redid the Doom gameplay with a direct line out recording instead of microphone audio, and then followed that up with a section showing how much it weighs and how it can pack up into basically a piece of luggage. Complete with a portability demonstration with me rolling it down a paved road like a doofus 😁

So here's a video I've wanted to do for a few years now! I've been slowly accruing components ever since finishing the original MIDI Mountain back in 2017, and after recently finding a rack-mount Roland MT-32 I figured it was finally time to put it all together.

The core idea is the same as the original MIDI Mountain: take a bunch of MIDI modules and combine them with some audio/MIDI switchers to make a mountain of musical goodness. But instead of just stacking it all on top of each other, this time we're putting it in an 8U rack-mount gear case. And with the extra room I've taken the opportunity to make a few excellent upgrades, like a proper audio mixer, an 8-port MIDI thru box, a clicky power strip, and an fourth General MIDI synth. Also a stupid equalizer, ha. Why stupid? Yeah you'll see.

Anyway, I hope you have half as much fun watching as I did putting this together! This'll be an enjoyable beast to whip out whenever I feel the urge to play some fancy MIDI tunes on an old PC or whatever, and I've already got plans to tweak a few things in the future. Lemme know whatcha think!

Ok hear me out: live stream midi songs like a radio stream on YouTube! I'd love to work while listening to this thing!

Dude, this is awesome, but literally, I just finished finding all the modules of the MIDI mountain 1! If I order more vintage MIDI modules from eBay my wife is going to kick me out of the house :)

Anonymous

Also the equalizer says it’s got a VFD but it’s clearly an LCD. A Verifiably False Display if you will.

Yikes!! Got the notice for this at near midnight.... Gonna have to watch it later, I think! :)

Hey Clint, loving the synth setup! Assuming you are making good use of Yamaha Dx7 Vsds eh!? Random question, where did you get the digital clock sitting above your synth setup? Looks awesome!

Anonymous

I was wondering if the rack actually closes back up after you finished installing al the modules. I guess it would. I imagine that does make it way easier for you to lug all of this around 😁

Phakorn Sripayak

I freaking hate those karaoke bar Graphics EQ, such a bummer. Maybe custom-made a 1U rack box that contains a spectrum analyzer board with a patch panel for plugging MIDI in and audio out?

Anonymous

Oh my god that third hand killed me.

Simon Tesla

I'm assuming the sound came through your mic? If so would be awesome to hear some direct line-out sound from this setup. Kinda got a wall-of-sound thing going with all 4/5 modules playing at once, hehe :)

Holy moly - I almost had a stroke in 9:45 when semi-transparent Todd Howard suddenly appeared in the middle of the screen :P

DJ Vinyl Woodgrain album when? Also you could totally apply a vinyl woodgrain to the box like the Woodgrain 486?

release the music lgr

Soooooo in the first 15 minutes of the video I realized that prices on SC-55 mkii were going to spike when this went live. I've been wanting one for a while to make a dungeon synth album on soooo.........I may have ordered one that was listed at a /really/ good price because of this video 😅😅😅😅 Also when you got into audio rate triggering the modules I briefly wondered if you'd been watching my IG videos or Twitch streams 🤣🤣🤣 Amazing video though. Love all of yours, but this one was really special for me. Also, hope you found a good solution for that Qu-Bit module :P

Was there a hidden Steve Jobs at 9:45?

eveningdreamer

thanks for the video! I love your music setup! I'd love a walkthrough of it someday (how you connect stuff, whats in it, the eurorack modules etc...)

Jason Wellband

Love this! I figure there should be something to mechanically connect those half-rack modules together so you don't need a shelf though. I did find this but not sure if it'd be too wide. I wonder if that shelf is just tall enough to make things tight. Now you need to make some kind of compartment for all the cables that leave the box so you can keep the back on and just pull the cables out :D

41:20 as older LGR would say: "I like it. I don't give a crap if you do."

hey dude, nice rack 😎

You almost did "Shave and a Haircut" at 8:15 putting the Akai down on the table and tapping it. :D

Love MIDI music and the hardware! Keep it up! Love to see what you get to replace that equalizer.

Robert Sanges

MIDI seems very confusing. It was fun to watch someone who knows what they are doing.

The big rack MIDI mountain! You ever end up releasing anything? I'd be game for a listen.

Anonymous

Fantastic! Love any video you do on MIDI stuff- particularly the MIDI Mountain. (thanks for revisiting it!) One request: as a fellow fan of Sim City 2000 from back in the day- could you try some of those classic tracks on the various different modules?

Frederick G.

You outdid yourself.

That's a LaMetric Time! It's a smart device that can display all kinds of things https://lametric.com/en-US/time/overview

LazyGameReviews

There used to be an internet radio station that played endless MIDI tunes! I don't think it's still around anymore but I always wondered if I could set that up myself with old hardware.

LazyGameReviews

Haha, I cannot be blamed for such domestic challenges ;) There are so many neat modules like this, I've got another three or four I haven't even shown on LGR yet!

LazyGameReviews

Far beyond my skill level or amount of free time, but I'd love to see such a thing made by someone

LazyGameReviews

I've shown it so many other times on LGR that I hope this episode won't affect prices too much. Already done the damage through previous vids :P Hope you enjoy the one you ordered though, it's a great device for retro gaming and composition alike!

LazyGameReviews

It's an intimidating prospect since there's so much to cover, but perhaps a quick(ish) overview might make for a fun video someday.

LazyGameReviews

Pretty much! I never know how to respond to those commenters, haha. Like, okay, you hate a cheesy 90s thing I enjoy? Darn, your loss I guess.

LazyGameReviews

I've posted dozens of two-minute songs on the LGR Twitter feed 👍 Here's a recent track: https://twitter.com/lazygamereviews/status/1348468340776427520

Because Why-Nerd

With that synth setup you are definitely the new Jean Michell Basinger... Or Clint Jarre... You decide 😊 crossing my fingers someday your tunes end up on 8 Bit guys videos, just see what it did to Anders Enger Jensen, he's a synth star now. 😊

obligatory "nice rack!" comment

This is amazing. I love whenever you cover MIDI stuff because it was always out of my reach at the time I was playing games that utilized it... and was well out of date by the time I could even think of buying any of this kind of equipment for myself. Can't wait to see what's next!

Riley W. Andersen

That bit with Todd Howard made me crack up 😅

That's it guys, we've achieved peak MIDI

Man, I really love the GMega's sounds. Wish a vst or sf2 of it existed! I'd love to hear its rendition of ROTT. Great vid as always!!

Anonymous

And here I thought I was doing well with the RAP-10..... :)

Fun video! In case you didn’t know, you can get the mt-32 to play general midi: http://www.houseofsynth.com/roland-mt-32-to-general-midi-conversion-utility

Anonymous

Just fun seeing how much the MT32 takes up in space when rackmounted, compared to the soundcanvas and other devices.

Niiice! This is very similar to the work I do on professional shows. Similar problems with spacing. You can get 1/2 u blank panels to get around the height issues although I think you’re at max capacity. Get rid of that EQ..! Pop an ultracurve in there ;) We also tend to address cable management by taking outputs to the side on the back and cable tying to rack ears. A lot of our bigger racks use half way rack strips, sometimes the half u ones which help with dongles and so on but that’s overkill. Main reason we do it is for airflow. I tend to be working with sonnet rack Mac mini chassis and those need air. It’s funny really, this looks a lot like what we used to build for digital orchestras. These days it’s a pair of rack macs , audio interfaces and switching hardware so we have fail over MIDI solutions Kit features a lot too. Main stage has killed off the MIDI modules though :(... nice work!

I like the Gmega's sounds (I pretty much love all of the sounds, really; even the AKAI), but the reverb is a bit over the top. Is that something you can adjust manually per sample with these devices?

If you are looking for any new Midi video ideas I recently got a Yamaha Mu80 and a Roland sc-88VL that I am trying to connect to Windows 10 and Dosbox for fun with a USB to Midi cable. Windows sees it as a midi cable but Descent in Dosbox feeds its tunes to Windows 10's internal synth instead of the Midi cable. Granted the fix is going with a good OS like Windows 3.1 or 9x. If there is any way to make Windows 10 almost fun with Midi, maybe it is good for a video.

Ever since I found out that you were interested in electronic music, and production, I've been DYING to see anything about your setup! I hope you can do any kind of content on that in the future, even on Blerbs!

I never had anything like these growing up but I think that the SG01k sounds great, in my opinion. I’ll definitely be keeping my eye out for one of those for my tech collection.

LazyGameReviews

Yeah it's got a unique sound that's worth exploring! Also keep an eye out for the SG01v if you don't need the optional serial interface, sometimes you can find that one more easily.

LazyGameReviews

No doubt I'll do a video or two eventually. Just that I've got a whole lot to say so it's intimidating to even begin!

This is awesome! We would love to see you release some music. I just have a Akai mini at the moment, but it helps me be creative. Just wanted to write to say your beard is looking great. Thanks for the wonderful video as always.

Peter Metzger

Finally got the time to watch this and was not disappointed :) as always, I love all your MIDI videos. On a side note, I recently got a MioXL midi patchbay and while it's probably way overpowered for what you're doing in this case (a pun!) it may be of interest for your other musical pursuits. I got mine racked up but haven't actually had time to hook stuff up or turn it on yet 😬 but I'm very looking forward to it. Basic rundown: it does MIDI patching via DIN, USB, and RTP-MIDI which, yes, connects everything to your network. This was actually my main use case because my keyboards are across the room from my main editing computer and I didn't want to have even more spaghetti strewn around the room.

Techmoan has a video now on Patreon with the spectrum analyzer you need :P https://www.patreon.com/posts/light-46503734

Might be a bit late to the party, but I recently stumbled across the MIDI products from iConnectivity while looking for a handy way to manage and route all our MIDI timecode and cue mess at a theatre. Their mioXL device is 1U and has like 12x DIN I/O plus USB-MIDI and Ethernet connectivity and you can store individual configs with individual routing and even filtering and swapping on a channel base. Just wanted to leave this here... Thanks for the great and detailed video!
