LGR - Using an IBM Model M on a Smartphone

Ever wanted to use a clicky keyboard from the 80's on your current Android phone? Well, if you're willing to risk some weird adapters, you can do just that!

Mmm, Galaxy Note 5, hope that means we'll see a Gear VR video at some point.

Person 1 of 3 here! I have actually done this with a variety of normal USB keyboards and those OTG cables. They work great. Mostly because newish (2012+ I think) use a full desktop kernel of debian (or some other linux variant of) underneath all that juicy Android goodness. This was a great video, and I love seeing more stuff like this from you.

The life hack that we didn't need, but the life hack that we deserve. I imagine it would be quite awesome for your DOS emulation on the go, especially if you can get a mouse. Just imagine being on a plane and getting a keyboard/mouse hooked to your phone just so you can play some Duke Nukem 3D. You'd be the geekiest guy on the plane. And yet... the most awesome guy on the plane. Groovy.

I love everything about this. I've wanted a Model M for years, but they really hold their value, and whenever I'm struck with the notion to get one, it seems like too much for me to justify dropping the money on. But one day... one day.

It's great how versatile these Android devices are, I love that you can attach basically anything to them. Lots of ideas are floating around in my head for the future now.

For when you absolutely positively must annoy everyone on the plane with CLICK CLICK CLACKITY CLACK

The soothing sound of clicks...

Logitech needs to come out with a Model M modern substitute, with full gaming support. Those keyboards feel so good. The illuminated keyboard they put our relatively recently feels good too but it's no comparison.

Nice phone! I absolutely love my Note 5! This opens up a whole new level of Oddware I think. You should see if some of your strange input devices like the mouse pen thing work with your phone!

It's a great phone indeed! And yeah, I've got a bunch of ideas floating around, especially with further adapters :)

I love how impractical an idea this is, yet it actually works. I've pondered about making the upgrade to one (though finding them with Mac layouts is a bit tougher), but it's the desk space which ruins it for me at the moment. One day. One day I can join the mechanical keyboard cult! ;)

A device with a screen and keyboard built in where it folds open... You know... I think they did indeed make something like that at one point... It was called the Osborne 1! :o

I think you should tag the ending as NSFW. I had to look nervously around the lunch room....

Do you think if we put a powered USB hub in the middle to provide the extra power to the keyboard it would reduce the risks? It's not like we're going for real portability here.

Your nerding over the model M is about the same thing I've been doing the last week with the DAS blue professional I got. So nice to have sound to it again, and a keyboard that can keep up with my typing (avg 85wpm), and has actual weight to it. Maybe I'll get a model M for my desktop if I find a clean and working one (yeah, got a das for my laptop)

Now I want a Model M, it looks and sounds beautiful! :D

At this rate, I really think that one day you're just going to make your own LGR-brand clicky keyboard. :D

Unicomp sells a spacesaver model for Apple OS X users! <a href="http://www.pckeyboard.com/page/product/UNIZPHA" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://www.pckeyboard.com/page/product/UNIZPHA</a>

It seems like it would, but I don't have one to test that. I did read somewhere that many USB hubs don't work with a Model M at all though, so that could be an issue.

Kadah

I was surprised how many random USB peripherals work with Android, like an xbox 360 controller works and usb wireless PC remotes.

With a keyboard like that, who needs sex?

I think I can top this. ;-) <a href="https://twitter.com/pcwzrd13/status/660153450135576576" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://twitter.com/pcwzrd13/status/660153450135576576</a>
