Hiya folks, hope your week has gone all right!

Got a fresh LGR episode for you today, one that's all about the Quantum 3D Raven graphics card. It's a 3Dfx Voodoo Banshee with a slick aesthetic and, well, not much more going for it. Pretty mediocre all-around, considering the competition back in the day.

However, what makes it worth talking about is the software that it comes with. Particularly, the elusive PC port of San Francisco Rush! Yeah, a straight up home conversion of the classic arcade game for Windows 9x that only works with this specific video card. Never sold on its own from what I can tell, just a bizarre situation all-around. And sure, the game was eventually cracked by fans to allow it to function on any compatible graphics card later on, but for a time the Q3D Raven was the only way you could play Rush on a PC.

And yeah, that's the gist of this one. As for me, I've been playing the new Flight Simulator for over a week now and am currently capturing gobs of footage for an upcoming video. It is a true wonder to behold, I can't wait to share some thoughts next week. Have a good one!

Just got Flight Sim 2020 yesterday. I love it! Although I need to find a good HOTAS solution. What are you using, Clint?

Possible typo, or uh speako? $149 with a $30 mail in rebate is $119 not $129 correct?

LazyGameReviews

Heh, yeeeeaah I caught that as well. Notes had "129" instead of "120" so I said it a couple times 🤷‍♂️ It's fixed in the next draft :)

The Voodoo Banshee was my first proper 3D card, but I had one from Creative.

Dereck

super slick... i wish we were neighbors! mine is 75 years old and loves to drink scotch, but doesn't know anything about 1990's computer parts.

Neat, didn't know San Fransisco Rush had a PC port. Weird they didn't give it a proper release considering it was already ported to the N64 and PS1 back then.

Yeah it was kind of mediocre for 3D, but the Banshee line introduced a high performance 128 bit 2D accelerator core (GDI, DirectDraw) that couldn't be matched and a very compatible VGA core with a VESA VBE 3.0 compliant video BIOS. A little late for 3DFX but this did allow them to finally be more than just an add-in card and that 2D/VGA IP was used in later chips.

Are you doing any flying around St. Lucia? I remember you mentioning you've spent time there in one of your older videos. My dad was born there and I travel back yearly (until recently of course). It's a beautiful island both in the sim and real life, I'm sure you agree!

I remember the 3Dfx logo. I'm sure that I had SOMETHING with the logo. But, it's been too long to remember. Fun video, though!

I've been waiting for you to cover that port of San Francisco Rush since we got a hint of it a few videos back. Man, what a crappy, mediocre port

Aw man, a black PCB in '98? Talk about nerd-cred.

I am LIVING for that installation music. I need to find a copy of it.

The Quantum3D logo reminds me of AOL.

Headset Guy

I still remember the first time I installed a game that played music during the installation. It was Detective Barbie 2: The Vacation Mystery, on our old HP Pavilion.

Honorary Octopus

Is it weird that I miss AOL? Well..the era of the internet that AOL represented, at least.. not the predatory, illegal behavior that AOL was known for.

LazyGameReviews

Yep, it's why it ended up being recommended for business users, as mentioned in the video! I'd like to put the card through some 2D tests at some point.

LazyGameReviews

Glad you enjoyed! That 3Dfx was always a sign you were about to see something graphically awesome.

LazyGameReviews

Seriously though, just an unfortunate state of affairs! I can only guess that's why they never released it on its own, but who knows.

How could you do Biakabutuka like that!? He was the MAN!

Joon Choi

I can't wait for your video on the new Microsoft Flight Simulator!

Where has the "background woodgrain" at the beginning of your videos gone? 🙁

I meant, normally when you present some hardware, there is this dark woodgrain background 😉
