Greetings, folks! Got a simpler, more laid back video here while I work on a handful of more involved projects. It's all about assembling a 65% scale model of the classic ThinkPad 701C -- with working TrackWrite keyboard!

Well, mostly working, heh. Seems these things vary a bit in terms of the plastics and overall end result in terms of the Butterfly mechanism. Still, it's an excellent-looking little model kit and it was a fun afternoon project to assemble. I'd love to find more vintage computer models like this to put together, if they exist.

Onto the next videos for me though! I've buried myself deep into lots of simulated flight in preparation for the launch of Flight Simulator 2020, super psyched for that to come out on the 18th. Seriously, if you haven't seen the latest on FS2020's featureset, do yourself the favor of looking up what it can do, it's utterly bonkers in scope and detail. So I hope you're in the mood for some retro computer aviation and chunky pixel landscapes in the near future!

Building a Mini IBM ThinkPad 701C Model Kit

Pretty interesting project, I might check out myself. My coworkers and I have been waiting for FS2020 to come out and see if we can finally see a simulator that can accurately demonstrate spins to our students, as well as do maneuvers like lazy eights somewhat passably

FS2020 preordered, had alpha access as well... But regardless of how great it is at launch I'll still be very eagerly for VR support which will unfortunately come later. At least it's officially going to come.

I bought one of these on eBay thinking it was an actual 701c. I was pretty disappointed when I received it only to realize it was just a model. Yeah, I should have known given the price I paid, but the listing was pretty deceptive, and has since been updated to more accurately reflect the fact that this is a model. Nevertheless, kinda cool that you did a video on it. Keep up the great work!

Wow! Isn't that a heck of a thing. I suppose there must be models of just about everything. Though I never would have suspected they would do one of a laptop. And even more so, all the gears to get the keyboard to close properly. Another interesting video. Well done, Sir!

I had no idea this was a thing, this is so friggin cool! Looks like I got some late night online shopping to do 😜

Very cool! Might be a fun project to try to stuff a Raspberry Pi and an LCD screen in there, pair with a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, and turn it into a pseudo Thinkpad. 🤓

Named "Mosquito" for being delicate and fragile it seems. ;) The Japanese love their models though, there are entire floors in major department stores dedicated to models of just about anything you can imagine.

pretty neat, I find it funny that this is a "miniature" sized model and yet its almost the same size as the first netbook I owned in middle school lol

It's certainly a neat little thing. A shame the setup didn't quite work 100%, having that happen would have been amazing.

I had no idea this was a thing either, but I’m so glad that it is. Now I have to see what other ones are out there.

Clint, assuming this was sold at retail - which would be more expensive now? The computer or the model?

VR is gonna be insane in this, I cannot wait! Seems it's only coming to a Microsoft headset first, but still.

LazyGameReviews

Haha, precisely how I came into possession of this one. I wish you luck, they've gotten hard to find!

LazyGameReviews

Considering the chunky nature of the lid, I bet that'd be possible with the right combo of hardware. Hmmmm.

LazyGameReviews

Sounds like an absolute dream. Closest I've been to was a model ship in Little Tokyo in LA, I could've spent all day there. Got myself a sweet Gundam kit though!

Do share if you find any! So far this is the only one in the series I've found. I don't even know if it *is* a series.

I wish someone would make a KIT like this but with a real keyboard, a real LCD screen and controllerboard for using with a Raspberry Pi. Would be awesome for having a portable pi ;)

I am psyched for FS2020. Please do some retro FS videos. I played FS 2 and 3 on my Tandy 1000 HX and FS 4 on my custom built 286. Now I own an airplane and still love flight sims. Looking forward to expansion packs and custom airplanes etc.

Wow, the model looks really cool. Too bad the mechanism doesn't entirely work as it should.

i want to retrofit one of those to have a real PC in it.

if you call lego models, you HAVE done models of computers before :)
