They should make a movie about the guy.

WB thought the same thing: <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/film/2013/jan/14/john-mcafee-movie" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://www.theguardian.com/film/2013/jan/14/john-mcafee-movie</a>

His life sounds like it should be scored by Jan Hammer

Epic video, I knew very little about John in the earlier years.

Incredible story ! I read his AMA, I understand better his attitude towards others, seems the guy can't have peace ! And I can't understand how f***ked up one would have to be in the head to shoot a poor dog. :(

Great story man!

I remember McAfee Virus Scan being cool because you could download the definitions updater, run the self-extractor with the /X switch (I think), and it would unzip not only the virus definitions file, but a command-line version of the scanner itself.

I love your Tech Tales. Always interesting.

Always wondered what the thing was about him... Now I know.

Manuel Adrian

I'd really love to see a Tech Tales episode involving Interplay.

Wow, I'm surprised you didn't mention the "How To Uninstall McAfee Antivirus" video -- though I guess most people know about it at this point, and you did at least mention bath salts, haha. I watched it for the first time last week and um... yeah. He really doesn't care anymore. lol

Kris Asick

I always used F-Prot until the DOS version was finally discontinued. ;)

Great video, I never thought much about the pre-installed software that came on my old laptops. This puts an amazing context behind what I once thought was an innocuous program.

Evan B

love this series! keep it up, Clint!

Oh man. That was a heck of a tale. Certainly lucky I never used his VirusScan (as it would have been after he'd left and all the way into downhill territory). Really enjoyed this one :D

a vote for McAfee is a vote for freedom! /sarcasm

oh man, I worked at Symantec for 8 years and McAfee was our nemesis there :) I heard so many stories about the guy there it was hard to know which one was true and which one was just corporate defamation. interesting to see, some of them were true

Steve Martin

I love it when you do Tech Tales! Have you seen either of director/writer/producer Jason Scott's documentaries, Get Lamp or BBS: The Documentary?

LazyGameReviews

Oh wow, that's wild. Was Mr. McAfee still involved with the company at the time? I can only imagine what it must've been like to have him as your rival, haha

LazyGameReviews

Glad to have provided some context! Haha, most would never guess such a character was behind it

LazyGameReviews

I never used a virus scanner at all until like 1998! And I think that was Norton, if I recall. It just crashed things so we got rid of it.

LazyGameReviews

Heh, good point. Although according to McAfee, he did a line of DMT powder, felt nothing, and decided to snort a whole bag of it. Soooo that may ruin a guy for a bit.

LazyGameReviews

Heh, well I do link to it on the YouTube video page for this :) But yeah, he's very much self-aware of how absurd his story is.

LazyGameReviews

Oh yeah, the earlier versions were very useful and usable. Shame how crappy it ended up.

I love Tech Tales, so was really pleased to see this pop up. I had no idea about the story behind this... totally crazy!
