Tweeted this last month and got quite a bit of interest! So here's a video about putting together an alternative to the PlayStation Classic.

Really just a Raspberry Pi in a 3D printed case, but it's still more functional and versatile than Sony's offering :P

Ahh, Ben Heck reference. Nice! I use one for Mame. Love good old arcade classics on the TV.

Great setup! I tried a few things with my first generation pi but could never get them to run smoothly. I might try the heatsinks in the hope of getting the same results as yourself, but I managed to get what I was looking for using the Wii and PSP.

you have to work for, but honestly I think the reward is definitely worth nostalgia

I've been wanting to put together a Pi Emulator machine for while now, maybe the video will inspire me to start working on it :D I usually play my PS1 games on my ps3, it's great for that too! Also, I think people are really hard on the ps classic: yeah, it is lackluster, but most of the games that are missing, would be hard to licence. Castlevania just got a re-release, Silent Hill is ... I mean, Konami. Wipeout would be expensive due to the music in the game, Crash and Spyro belongs to Activision, the just released the remakes. Gran Turismo would be hard as well, due to the licensing of the cars. If you check the PS Store for example none of the GT games are available anymore, except for GT Sport and Gran Turismo PSP.

The whole PS1 classic just leaves a very sour taste. Lineup is meh. No analog controls to be seen. And some of the games are PAL versions? Sony, y u do dis? Can't disagree with using a Pi though, it is a very capable machine. Playing thousands of games without leaving your couch to change them? Very nice. :P

very cool! thanks

I stopped using retropie a few years ago and switched to recalbox. The setup is a lot simpler plus the web interface is nice for uploading ROMs. I have an old blue tooth PS3 controller that works perfectly with the RPi3+ which makes gaming a real joy! Love this kind of content! Thanks Clint!

Nice. I bailed on my PS classic pre-order after the announcements and previews. I was drawn in by the marketing and aesthetic but when I came to my senses I took the money saved and replaced my Pi3 RetroPie with a dedicated Intel Mini-ITX PC in a case which looks very console like. I then put RetroPie on a Linux Mint installation. Although the Pi was great, it still struggled with near perfect PS1 emulation even with cooling and the correct power supply. The faster processor and GPU have also opened up N64 emulation a lot more too. Was well worth it and I call it the Timtendo. Anyway great to see RetroPie getting more exposure it’s 100x greater than mini consoles for significantly less cost...although there are of course the legal issues. The Pi still lives on as my PiHole and Ubiquiti controller. P.S. I’m still working on securing that Acorn Archimedes!!

I made my own retropie machine out of MDF and made it look like a miniature arcade box. Fun times.

Nice! I had a set up using an old original Pi some time back, it seems like this is a lot better at the job?

I'll be honest: I never saw much use for me of these Raspberry Pi things. Everything they can do my PC and Notebook can as well. Yes, they're FAR more portable, but since I practically never leave the house, I honestly don't have much use for them. That being said, I see myself getting a bunch of them as console-specific emulators, each one with their respective case, just for the hell of it.

awesome! i've tried retropie before, used it to emulate dreamcast games as well as ps1 games. how did you capture the gameplay footage though? :) thanks

I prefer having a full blown PC of yesteryear plugged into my TV, which seldom sees "TV" but much more games and stuff. Looks cool having a GBA game blown up to a meter. But your setup is nice and easy to use, love seeing it. And if someone wants something hazzle free, Retropi is the way to go. :)

I bought a Sony Android TV and dual shock controller and downloaded a PS1 emulator. My tv can play PS1 games on its own now. Then Sony updated the tv firmware and blocked the use of a DualShock controller. Now only 8 bitdo etc will work and they just aren’t the same. I should try it again but the goal is to have no hardware at all.

Nice video also worth metioning you can get the NESPi+ case for about €40 ($45). It comes with a working power button led's and looks amazing.

I had issues with throttling even with a heatsink and a small fan when running PSX emulation (specifically lots of issues with Chrono Cross) on a Pi3. Glad to hear you've had more success!

It made me so happy to see gameplay of Tomb Raider.

The main reason why I don't invest in Retropie systems, is because of the whole self assembly thing, whether easy or not. I prefer to just have the whole thing already assembled and ready to go, as I'm not one of putting consoles together myself. Unfortunately, I don't know of any way to get a proper one pre-built, so unless I find something that fits the bill, I may have to look around for other alternatives.
