Since Forsaken Remastered is coming out (or rather, just came out today) I figured it was the ideal time to take a look back at the original Windows game from 1998!

FPS games with 6DoF movement, or Descent-likes, aren't everyone's cup of tea. But if you like your tea with tons of colored lights, drum and bass music, and ample '90s absurdity? Oh yeah, Forsaken delivers.

Forsaken Retrospective

I thought Forsaken was garbage back in the day... But maybe I didn't get the full experience considering I played it on the N64.I didn't get the PC master race edition unfortunately, maybe it was graphically superior and a better experience :P

LazyGameReviews

Talked about it in the video, but Forsaken 64 was an almost entirely different game made by separate developers than the PC version. So yeah, bit of a different thing :)

Neat. Have you done a Descent 3 video? I have such fond memories of playing that back in 1999, but my rig was never powerful enough for it at the time.

I remember walking into the movie rental store, finding this game on the shelf, asking my mom to rent it for me and hearing "It has a naked lady on the front, no." And 20 years later, having a naked lady on the front of a video game hasn't steered me wrong yet

I am not very good at FPS games but holy crap does this game look fun!

Some of your most well-written commentary ever! Your script-writing skills are at their peak, my friend.

Awesome video as always, Clint! I've actually never played Forsaken, despite ogling the box art in my formative years. I had no idea what it was even about, but now I'm definitely intrigued!

I had totally forgotten about this game, this review makes me want to play it again. Then I remember how this, and in particular how Decent, makes me motion sick in record time (not counting VR, which makes me motion sick even faster). Anywho this is a really well done review, as someone else said it's well written and the video capture is on this is great as well, the look is right as in it's not too high of a resolution yet it still looks great now. Often people capture old game clips at high resolution that makes the games not look how they originally looked, but this, this was perfect. Again, great job!

Alyxx the Rat

I played this game to death back in 2000-2001. Just bought the remaster and having a blast with it. Just... one of the best Descent clones ever.

Joon Choi

Games like descent and forsaken make me nauseous from motion sickness. Too bad, the game looks fun.

LazyGameReviews

Yeah, that game resolution disparity is a pet peeve of mine so I try to make it accurate while looking okay up-rezd

Never played Forsaken but man, oh, man, I really wish they re-release Re-Volt one of these days, because I freaking loved that one. Please, Clint, go poke GOG with a stick until they do.

LazyGameReviews

They did several years ago! Sadly the new owner had it pulled down again due to a rights conflict. Was supposed to be temporary but it seems permanent https://www.gog.com/forum/revolt/revolt_temporarily_delisted_on_gogcom/page1

YAY, the warranty card says "Glen Cove, NY 11542"! That's my hometown, and also where Acclaim's HQ was located. P.S. Where did my other comment go?

LazyGameReviews

I don't know, I saw it but it's gone here too D: Still, cool to have that kind of local heritage! I recently discovered a nearby building used to manufacture IBM parts in the '60s, I love finding that kinda stuff nearby :)

LazyGameReviews

I find the remastered ones helps with my potential for motion sickness if you crank up the resolution and field of view! But yeah, these kinda games are always iffy like that sadly

LazyGameReviews

It's one of those that's so enjoyable in its own way that calling it a clone seems like a disservice. Lovely shooting bliss.

Ahh 1998, a great year for (PC) gaming! I never even heard about this one strangely enough, it looks neat. Awesome soundtrack as well, reminds me of one of my all time favorites: Need For Speed III (released in the same year)

the best descent clone ;) at the time, i played it on PC and N64, and i have to say that the N64 version is really relly good ! also plays well with the trifork controller

Was hoping for a "Practice Moode"! Well guess I'll look up one of your Head Games reviews to scratch that itch that I got now.

Robbo the Hut

I remember one time walking into this pc shop my dad used to shop at and the owner had this game up connected to what I remember being about at least 10 monitors mirroring the game and thinking how fricking cool this game look. Years later when I built my first gaming pc I bought a used copy of this off Ebay and now I have it in my collection.

That's at least the second time you've been gypped with a sealed, big box PC game Clint (the other one being the utterly forgettable Read-A-Rama); maybe that's why I usually buy loose copies from eBay. And while I truly enjoy playing Descent/Descent 2, with Forsaken I'm completely indifferent - the gameplay just doesn't click with me. I do own an OEM CD which came bundled with the Creative Labs Graphics Blaster Riva TNT 16mb AGP card I bought in late 1999. https://i.imgur.com/GXzISaw.png I've tried several times to give this game a chance, but it fails to motivate me (I can't even finish the first map). Multiplayer is a no go either - I'm not interested in online gameplay. When I finished building my S370 Pentium 3 1GHz/GF3 Ti200/Voodoo 2 SLI/Windows 98 SE gaming PC over 2 years ago I tried Forsaken once again - and lost interest after 15 minutes. It doesn't give me any incentive to keep on playing, no matter what I do. At least the soundtrack is appealing enough for me to keep the game CD (for now). Nevertheless, this is a very nice video you put together Clint; I'm sure it will please fans of this game and even attract interest from others that never played the PC version. As for me, I'll keep my copy stored in its paper sleeve for the time being until I decide what to do with it.

That is seriously such a weird design choice for the box in the US. But it's Acclaim, so I am not at all surprised sadly. I dunno why I missed out on it BITD (I'm guessing the software support meant it was unplayable on my machine at the time), but I happily plonked down on the remastered version now it's out.

Anonymous

so sad and FURIOUS there is no game in the box...

Anonymous

Man, there is just something about Glide lighting!

Anonymous

Man the intro done by Duke Nukem on forsaken 64 is way better

LazyGameReviews

Yeah, a character or two voiced by Jon St. John as well in that version. Would've been neat to have on PC!

Anonymous

I completely don't remember this game. Perhaps I was too busy actually trying to pay attention at university at the time.

Because Why-Nerd

Loved the PC version at the time, playing with my 3DFx card. Allthough the title of the game rung a bell, the cover didnt match my memory, but when I saw the game footage, I remembered the cover. it seems that Europe had another cover for the game. But still a effing good game at the time.

Interesting... I played Forsaken 64 back in the day when I rented it from Blockbuster Video. I had no idea that it was a highly modified version of the original PC game. I just thought it was just a port; mainly due to the fact that when I rented it, I thought it was terrible! But hearing that the N64 game was different, I might have to give the Remastered version a chance to redeem itself.

Is it normal for sellers to rewrap big box software and sell as brand new old stock? If so, any clues to lookout for before buying?
