Up to this point I've done diffuse and albedos in zbrush's polypaint mode. Even if it did the job, it is an highly limited way of painting directly on models. We've said in earlier posts that we wanted the dragoness to be a step up in every aspect, so I went on and tried two softwares: Quixel Suite 2.0 and Substance Painter 2

I've decided to go with Substance Painter 2 because the UI is clean and logic, and the app delivers just as good results as Quixel suite does.

Here I've taken the simple purple base albedo and painted on a subtle scale texture, I think it kicked up the fidelity a notch!

I'm having a blast in Substance Painter, and I'm still gnawing away at making a more, realistic scale texture, that of course will be optional to chose later on. -Dogson

Fantastic work, Dogson! =D

Baphomet

The new textures are looking fantastic, I can't wait to see these all in action.

The green base with the scale texture is a particular revelation. Your models just keep getting better.

Must say the new texture looks so much better. With the less pronounced scales, it feels a lot less busy, while still having that nice level of detail. Also like the contrast the off-white accents give with the green version. Very nicely done.

my wife loves the old scale texture, and this one isn't flipping her skirt up, so to speak. Something about the big scales really got her excited. for my part, the large scales make more sense because you'll be able to see them from a distance, while the small ones will fade pretty quick. Also, the large and small scales on the older version worked together and looked interesting, while this mono-size scale is... eh. Anyway, love your work, and hope to see the dragoness soon! you guys are awesome!

I am not really feeling the new texture as much. From a distance, you can't even tell she has scales, she just looks fuzzy. I was super excited about the dark purple scales, they look really awesome. I usually don't comment, because you guys are pretty darn good at what you do, but I couldn't stay quiet about this. I would much rather the bigger scales. It looks much more dragon-y

Brandi

On the scale topic I really like both about equally. I agree with the above criticisms but if it were possible to have both without it being too much work I'm sure everybody would be happy.

Personally I find the green version a bit to light in color, a darker Emerald Green might look better but thats my thought.

I personally like them either way, but seeing as how many are saying they don't like the new scale texture, perhaps a compromise between the two would work. Maybe larger and more prominent scales transitioning to smaller scales on the belly and where you would expect bending, like the back of the knees, armpits, between the thighs, etc. Might make it a little more realistic, although I'm sure that would make a lot more work for you guys.

BlackTH

She's coming along nicely, but I, for one, really enjoyed her smoother textures...! What about keeping a smooth and slick one, making it blue + white and calling it the "Marine Dragon" skin? You guys have a lot of scenes involving water, and we get such nice results posing characters inside/near the water... Anyway, I think the "metallic" and rougher skin from the last post was more fitting for a fantasy dragon. Now she looks more like a lizard, which's cool as well as realistic, but I have to agree with the others... bigger scales is where it's at. Oh, and try and fiddle with those lighter parts in her green skin, make them less pink-ish and more yellow-ish, or just pale. Reptiles' flesh seems quite paler compared to ours. Amazing stuff! Can barely wait to check out what you guys have cooking for us! ;D

Hey yeah! A marine version is a great idea. Smoother scales, no wings... taller tail fins..well the fins seem like a ton of extra work XD nevermind....getting ahead of myself. Perhaps just the smoother scales and the color combo, heh.

Interesting. Can you, by any chance, upload a demonstration video on how the skin mesh reacts with the model when active?

Horsie

I like the green skin a lot more than the purple one.

You know, I'm actually really keen on hearing female opinions and input on the females, and sure, males too that I make. A huge lot of our base users are male, and that is fine and all, but it would make the input I get more dynamic if females would also express their opinion. Is there any chance your wife would want to channel more of her opinions and input through your account in the future? -Dogson

Waves

Everything about her just looks so, so, nice. Is she going to have some sort of special "hair" design to go with the aquatic-like dragon theme? Edit: Didn't realize there was a change in size of her scales. Yeah, https://gyazo.com/ae109fa2f76f6db5e2e9cec591698e06, is what really amazes me. I'd keep that one or have a skin for it at least. Seems like you guys worked hardest on it too since the scales changed in size depending on where they were on the body and how significant those size changes are visually. Also agree with others on how a sea-blue/bleach-white skin works well since she looks like an aquatic dragon, to me at least. In addition, if you decide do go through with this, wings that work well underwater would be unique and I'd love to see what ideas you'd explore with it.

I think gem colors would be awesome. Maybe something along the line of Chlorastrolite and honeycomb fire opal

I'll try to dial the hight on the scales down. On the notion on the tailfin, we had a very big, fluke-like tailfin but it hogged up a big portion of the uv-space, so we went for another smaller design. Perhaps she'll get that big fluke later, I'd love to see that, but as of writing, all our attention is to get her and ver. 0.6.0 out as fast as we can. -Dogson
