This is something we discovered a while ago, but with some minor tweaks to our fur shader, we can turn it into something that resembles feathers. While we don't have a character yet that feels suitable for this, perhaps we could use it for a future one. Perhaps an optional skin for a bird or raptor. :)

I think it looks OK on the fox. Nothing to write home about but it does add some texture to it. I like the bird/raptor idea. I think it would look good on a character like that.

Puck.Softpaw

I think it looks awesome, and it makes me actually look forward to an avian/raptor character in the future. On a side note, it reminds me, what's the chance for fur shading to be applied retroactively? Any fluffy bunnies on the horizon?

Dr.Stain

Not bad...It looks like it would feel good in the palm of your hands. It's nice to know you're tinkering with feathers and scales already. Is there maybe a bird or reptile (not counting dragons) we should be looking out for in the near future?>v>

yiffalicious

We might add it at some point to characters made previously, but in Bunny's case I'm not sure how much time we want to spend on that model. It was our first model and it has many glaring flaws in its execution. We would probably make an entirely new version of her instead having all these new features.

yiffalicious

No bird or reptile is currently planned, but it is going to happen for sure in the future.

that skin could be used for a harpy possibly, since you guys are gonna release dragons next if youre continuing with the legendary creatures thing

im a new patron btw and damn, was it worth it, this is such a great app. i look forward to the upcoming releases

Dave

Pardon me but from the link it looks like water color :P

Ladmaro

Save it for a new character perhaps. Female bird with wings, a beak etc.

Navoa

A Blaziken looking character please. :3

Shadow Drake

Will work nicely for the feather types... you could even use this on the dragon aswell as a 'test'

Dark Sunrise

Wow, yeah, that'd look great on a bird character...

I think it looks fantastic, even just on the fox there. Doesn't suit the character clearly, now that it's been done ahead of time probably saving some work hours in future projects.

ObiCanary

OH yes, definitely. You just simply must keep that option for if any sort of avian is introduced.

If this is an easy addition, I'd even like to see this as an option on any character.

Baphomet

I think it's definitely better suited for accents on non-avian characters. If we ever get a thick turkey or pretty peacock though it would fit perfectly.

Horsie

Looks awesome. Now you need to make a bird to make good use of this tech.

SexyTurian69

Mmmm a sexy bird would be delicious <3

That's pretty nifty tbh Great reuse of resources. If it's about the same amount of processing required (Or even a bit more), I'd say it's a good idea.

yiffalicious

It's actually less, since this renders in the geometry pass and doesn't need ugly hax to get shadows working. But yeah, it's still pretty resource heavy.

Stubie Doo

Top notch work as always gents, you guys never cease to amaze me with your visual design prowess. Now perhaps a sexy bird character incoming?

Anonymous

I didn't even think of shadows for your previous usage of that fur tech. I can only imagine anything from an oddly made very steep parallax to a hacky kind of actor lightmap being experimented with. Though that does explain the odd behaviors that sometimes occur with it (That I believe you guys fixed for 5.4. Such as the cat). Interesting tho. I imagine tho that this character may be best rendered with Ambient Occlusion disabled (Tho I'm not familiar with the DX11 technique so I may just be entirely wrong)

Very impressive as always.

Would you also be able to use if for wings, proper? As in the longer primary and secondary feathers? I was just idly thinking about it. I mean the wing itself, as an object (an avian wing), is pretty complicated, no? Anyways, once again great work.

yiffalicious

Not suited for longer feathers, but for those real geometry could be used instead of shader generated geometry.
