Yes. Here we go. Yes to all three of those questions. I'm going to go run and get me a strawberry Snapple and then we're going to enjoy this video. I have never seen a tiny desk Korea But I have seen tiny desk of Western artists and they are really really good. So I am excited for this. Its kismet. I really do love run for roses. I love that it didn't even start and D'some you're like oh it's so good already. Lily's voice is crazy. Oh sullyoon sounds good. Not gonna lie I wasn't a fan of all of the vocals for love me like that. Lily's hair is so cool. The vocals and arrangement for dash was stunning. Ooooo, the change up with this instrument for dash was killer. Awwww snozern is an adorable name. Oooooo, that sax guy looks cooooolll. Oh wow! I didn't realize they didn't have in-ears for this. That's wild. Oooo, i didn't know sullyoon's voice could go that low. what is the short blonde haired members name? (Bae now that they introduced themselves). Lily's voice is so strong. Are there mics set low? Because at some points it was hard for me to hear them over the instrumentals. Staaaahhhhppp, Lily and the long blonde haired member is adorable (Jiwoo now that they've introduced themselves). The ending was very nice. I do not understand how that thing and that Lily played, works. Okay, so by process of elimination I'm assuming the The short blonde haired one is bae. Lol as soon as I said it she introduced herself 😹. Jiwoo's cheeks are adorable. What do you mean the last song? This can't be the last song. This went by too quickly. The setting and arrangement definitely changes the vibe of the song for me. I have chills right now. I didn't get it the first time I listened to it earlier with you. But I have had hair erection since they started singing this time. Haewons voice is so lovely. Wait its really over? Oh no. Noooo. The post concert depression. Its so real. HUH!?!? There's a movie that doesn't have any end credits?!? Lol thank you for providing an example 😹. You just knew we were gonna ask huh? Yes Lily was a stand out for me. Oooo, i would love a stream like that. With the watching and pausing.

I love them because they remind me of vocal jazz singers. They have such amazing voices.

What's even more amazing, is that to perform at Tiny Desk Korea they demands 4 things: -no wearing of earphones -no MR&AR - one-take filming - use of Tinydesk Korea shotgun mic (no post-production) If just one of this rules are not followed, they will precise the performance as "special". There is no "special'" in NMIXX performance title. They are actually the first kpop group or kpop idols to do it ! If you want to be amazed i recommand you Nmixx Dash and Run For Roses soundbomb performance. This was for me their best performance till tiny desk ! As always great reaction ! You are slowly becoming one of my favorites reactors. You really analyse the songs and make clear what you get of it. Bravo guys !

Olivia

tiny desk really made me emotional! I am curious about other music shows (First Take, it’s Live, Killing Voice, LMJ, etc.) and the types of mics they use and how it achieves different effects. Also! please check out all their LMJ Service appearances! they’re gonna become the first ever group to have ALL members feature on the show with Kyujin being the last member to appear. I anticipate she’ll appear next comeback, who knows, but i hope you guys can react to them.

Handsome Sausages

Holy shitttttt that is INSANITY. That's why the title seemed different! Rushed to change the title to get rid of special XD That is SO awesome!!

kerolina

You guys really should check out Run for Roses on It’s Live! They did it with Young K and it is insane live 😭

hessa

ㅋㅋㅋ hanc looked like he was apart of the tiny desk korea logo like he was ‘behind’ the desk LOL

hessa

but omg when this vid came out i immediately went ‘handsome sausages are gonna lose their shit about this’ and i was right

kerolina

Also yes, haewon is 100% a menace. I love watching her on Workdol for this reason… she’s unhinged most of the times. It’s no surprised they’re all in JYP tho 😭 they do give off the 2pm, got7, skz kind of chaos!

kerolina

One more thing: Lily’s got a thing about perfect pitch. The others make fun of how she used to get angry at them when they sang in the wrong pitch (like “oh my god I can’t take it! the pitch is wrong!!”) which i can imagine is how they all improved like crazy just to make sure it’s pitch perfect. She also recently went viral when covering one part of Day6’s HAPPY on 동네스타K! Highly recommend checking it out. All the members did SO well in it

Jenni Heath

NMIXX is really insane! Have you guys watched any of their stage practices? It's like normal dance practices but they sing live.

Jenni Heath

Also, you definitely need to check out their Lee Mujin Service episodes. Lily was even brought back a second time for the 100th episode special with Minnie from (G)I-DLE and Bang Yedam. Also Lily and Haewon were on KStarNextDoor with Kiss of Life Natty and Belle and have a high note competition.

Handsome Sausages

XD So to answer your questions, I think the mics aren't necessarily set 'low' but apparently there aren't much post-production done to master the tracks, AND because the instruments are inevitably louder and the mic all around the place would pick up the instruments way more than the vocals, it's hard to overpower it in these settings! Seemed alright balance wise to me :) Melodica works by you blowing air into the tube while playing. So if you don't blow air in, the keys won't produce sounds. It's an essential inst every Korean used to learn in elementary school! Lastly for streams we'd still listen to the whole thing once most likely (unless it's a reallly long video) and then return to pause and discuss (sorta like how I did it with the initial SKZ Mountains Unveil video!). Should be fun to try it some time to make streams more common in HS community :D

Linda !

Slowly growing to love NMIXX along with the both of you! I’ve known of them for a long time, but I never delved into their music like this until I discovered your channel! Looking forward to learning more about them as you do!

Kwestleo

Melodica sounds like a lesson in multitasking and breath control. Wow

joe powa

mr - music recorded: instruments prerecorded or instrumental song playing ar - all recorded: the whole song with vocals is played while the idol is performing So to put it simply, no backtrack in any way, just dry vocals and instruments

Yoshi (づ ̄ ³ ̄)づ

Absolutely loving that you both commented on the "sax guy", Jason Lee(!!), within a minute of the video because I cannot help but love the energy he brings

Poohbearcubz

I hope you will check out the girls on Lee mujin service. Lily's was on twice and are so good. She was in the 100 episode with Minnie from Gidle and a solo artist who was featured in the yg battle during the skz survival show. I have been a casual fan but I am really liking them more and more with you.

Ohh here's a really good explanation from chan^^ https://youtu.be/R-1BMPEy9kg?si=ZLSlQ48zRLQ0gDHg

I've been a live sound engineer (in the US) for almost 30 years, so I'll comment on this amazing performance. I've done thousands of shows. I'm assuming that you both have production experience, and I assume that anyone subbing your Patreon wants that perspective. I've been showing this performance to other experienced live engineers and performers, because I think it is so unusual. So here we go. Just off the top, this is a "statement" performance. Most Idol groups could not do this, and they know it. There are a handful of Idol groups and soloists who could perform in the same way, and I predict that you'll see more of them doing performances like this. This industry is highly competitive, and NMIXX threw down a challenge in this performance. I predict you'll see a resurgence of actual live performance for Idols, for those groups who can do it. Most of my experience is in live on-stage performances, but I've done a fair amount of broadcast studio live performances, just like this Tiny Desk show. When Idol groups perform on these shows (It's Live, Sketchbook, Immortal Songs, IU's Pallette, etc), they usually make production decisions to lower the difficulty for the vocalists and preserve the ability to do post-production on the vocals. They position the band away from the vocalists and put them off-axis from the microphones to isolate the vocalist in the microphone audio. On It's Live, for example, the band looks to be about 20-30 feet behind the vocalists. Killing Voice and Sound Bomb don't have live bands. On IU's Pallette, the band is off to the side. Sketchbook and Immortal Songs are filmed on massive stages, where the band is off to the side and at least 20 feet away from the vocalists. That's normal. If the band is far away, the vocal microphones mainly pick up the voice of the member. That's called "isolation," and it makes post-production possible. After the performance, an engineer can edit each vocal track for unwanted sounds (throat clearing sounds, coughs, mic handling noise, etc), they can tune vocals for pitch, process vocals with compression and eq, and add reverb/echo/vocal doubling. Most companies will want that control for Idols and soloists to assure the quality. It will be a point of negotiation in the appearance contract. Different shows will have different production standards. On It's Live, for example, they keep the vocal tuning to a minimum. They will tune the vocals a little bit, but not a lot. Killing Voice used to be the same way, but they seem to have relaxed that in the past year, because more recent performances have a lot of tuning. IU's Pallette and Sketchbook also seem to have self-restraint in the amount of post-production they allow. They do some tuning, but they have a line they won't go over. However, you can find plenty of live performances, on shows that I won't mention, where the post-production is off the chain. Companies want their Idols and soloists to sound perfect because that's their product, and I can't blame them. People expect perfect these days. It's very risky to be less than perfect in live performance. And that's why this NMIXX Tiny Desk performance is so amazing. It is _intentionally designed_ to remove all the safety nets and make most post-production impossible. The way this Tiny Desk performance was engineered, if JYP himself walked in the video editing suite afterwards and demanded that the vocals be tuned to correct pitch, or other types of audio editing, they wouldn't be _able_ to do it. That takes a lot of balls to expose your new 4th gen girl group to that kind of risk. So how was this performance staged and engineered, and what makes it different? I could discuss this for hours, but I'll boil it down to a few main points: 1) Stage vocal monitoring. We already know that nobody is wearing in-ear monitors, the members or the band. But they have to be able to hear themselves in some way. So they are using old-school "wedge" (because they are in the shape of a wedge) stage monitor speakers positioned on the floor in front of the NMIXX members. You can't see them, but I'm 100% certain they are there. That's the reason they chose to use shotgun mics (Sennheiser MKE 600s, I think) for the vocals, because shotgun mics reject sound from the sides and back. If you've ever used wedge monitors on stage instead of in-ears, you know that wedges make it much more difficult to hear yourself. Stage vocal monitoring without in-ears has be very carefully engineered for it to be effective. In-ears are sooo much easier. 2) Size of stage and positioning. That little stage on Tiny Desk is maybe 12 feet by 12 feet, maybe smaller. They have a 5 member band, with drum kit and four instrument amps (the guitarist has a Fender electric guitar amp and an acoustic amp on stand, plus bass amp and keyboard amp). Plus the 6 NMIXX members. They can barely turn around without knocking something over. There's no isolation in the vocal mics at all. I can hear the drumkit and the sax bleeding into the vocals. The vocals are picking up reflections off the set. The mix gets a little crunchy in the choruses when the band gets louder, which is a product of so much bleed. 3) Pitch and tempo reference. Because the band is right behind the vocalists and they are not wearing in-ears, they have no choice but to hear the band. Their only pitch and tempo reference is the band. Idols usually have pitch references, tempo references (click track), and even guide vocals in their in-ear mixes. NMIXX has none of that here. To make it even harder, the band is playing alternate arrangements of the songs, with jazz harmonization of the chords and tempos that drift organically, sometimes WAY off the vocal melodies. In those spots, the NMIXX members have to partially _ignore_ the band and sing the vocal melodies from memory. 4) Vocal technique. In Korea, they teach "speech level" singing, which keeps vocal volume down to make the tone prettier. Idols will belt, but in limited sections only. So they are signing fairly quietly, a few feet in front of four instrument amps, a sax player, and a drummer. That's a worst-case scenario, and the members will have sections where they cannot hear themselves, even with the stage vocal monitors. They need to sing from memory, which is a technique I learned when I was doing acapella choir. It takes practice, but you can hear the note in your head, then sing it right on pitch. You just have to open your mouth and go for it. It takes a lot of confidence in your technique and ability, because if you hold back less than 100%, you will crash and burn. This performance indicates the NMIXX members have practiced that technique, because that's the only way they could execute some of those parts. That's very advanced vocal technique. This vocal performance is not perfect. In the intros to Run for Roses and Love is Lonely, I can hear lots of missed notes. You can see Bae and Sullyoon's facial expressions when they miss a note, usually at the ends of phrases. There's a lot that an engineer could correct. But as you pointed out in your reaction, it doesn't matter in the context of the performance, and that's the magic of live performance. It's great to see Tiny Desk bringing that back to Kpop.

Andria Panda

You guys have to see the It's Love for Run For Roses! They did it with Young K! Also, 5/6 of the girls have Lee Mujin Service episodes!

Kiki Meowzilla

all of this just reaffirmed and then some everything I had taken from the performance. Thanks this was so well explained!

There aren’t many groups that could have pulled this off. NMIXX are so ridiculously talented, and I’m so happy that people are starting to realise that they are vocally top tier. They really are singers first and foremost, and the fact they are all incredible dancers is just the icing on the cake. They are really maturing with every release while still retaining their fun and quirkiness. Also.. I love watching reactions when people freak out about how good something is. It’s nice to share in something that brings so much joy 🥰

Klaramell

nmixx are amazing 😍🔥

What the toughest rules about tiny desk apart from using boom mic, without in ears, without pre/post production? It also have to be done in One Take, I guess this rules scare the shit out of most .
