It's been a good month but I have nothing to show right now so pledges are paused until next time. Honestly, there might not be anything to show next month either but I'll resume pledges then regardless since we're still making progress.

I figure I should share some thoughts on the poll while I'm posting. First of all, thanks for the responses and comments, there was plenty of useful feedback and I got the sense that everyone felt comfortable sharing their thoughts which is great. I was tempted to join the discussion but didn't want to introduce any bias.

Patreon doesn't seem to have a cut-off date on polls so I'll post the current results here for posterity.

Since the channel is a one-man operation I suppose all these data points ultimately get filtered down into a single emotion in me so I'll just tell you what I'm thinking. To put it in Steam review terms it might not say Overwhelmingly Positive but it would definitely say Very Positive. My overall sense is that most people really like the new videos but maybe don't want them to be the only thing I'd ever make going forward. That's understandable and sensible, the channel has always been a mixture of formats anyway.

I'm not going back to the review format so I think the only lower effort videos I could make would be recommendations. At this point there's plenty of recommendation videos I'd like to make but they seem like they wouldn't be much value to you patrons specifically. For example, I doubt anyone reading this needs to be told again how highly I think of Ghosts 'n Goblins Resurrection. Maybe some of you see me as a megaphone though, someone with similar taste/ideas who can use my platform to help spread good games further.

It's funny, I admit that some of the impetus behind the recent theory videos has been a desire to improve the discourse and appreciation of games but you can't know the knock-on effects of anything you do. I'm trying to word those videos very carefully and I believe everything I've said in them but I still think it's possible they'll actually do more harm than good. In the end, the simple act of recommending good games for the right reasons and encouraging people to leave their comfort zone might be the best thing anybody can do to improve the medium. Still, they're not mutually exclusive pursuits and I feel a certain obligation to continue making theory videos as I think I'm well suited to the job.

For those of you who voted in the bottom half of the poll: I appreciate your honesty and feel the need to repay it with some honesty here and now. You're welcome to continue supporting me if you still have good will towards me but I don't know that the channel will ever win you back in the future. I hope to continue evolving and producing different types of videos but I think the recent stuff is still very much the shape of things to come.

Thanks again for the feedback everyone. Writing this post has gotten me a little pumped to work on the channel so I think I'll do some scripting today. As always, I'll be back again next month to keep you updated so I'll see you then.

For what it's worth, I think the theory videos you've made thus far are the best ones you've made to date, at least the Context Sensitivity video is. I think if you went forward making only those, you might end up helping a lot of people with game design projects.

I completely understand that it must feel extremely uncomfortable taking pledges, even when I seems there's not alot to show for it, but overall it's really important to take in that it's also very much our responsibility if we want to continue supporting you or not. As long as you continue to be transparent and do your monthly updates (which you are), you aren't doing anything wrong!

Maybe it's foolish, but I'd like to believe (and kinda do) that the theory videos can have a pretty significant effect. Their appeal is strictly limited to people very serious about games, but because of that, I think they have the possibility of resonating with a thoughtful, passionate audience more strongly than anything else; anything besides a great game, of course. Provided a video reaches the right person, it could inform the creation of a new, uniquely awesome game. I love your recommendations; they're why I've had many of my most rewarding gaming experiences. However, they don't do nearly as much to directly challenge the viewer to achieve a new understanding. Without general critical commentary, it's much harder for a medium to meaningfully, lastingly make progress. Providing useful lenses and rules-of-thumb is what best helps people label and organize concepts relevant to comprehending the technique of an art form. Some theoretical principles do make it big and stick; think of "Show, don't tell" in narrative literature or the 180-degree rule in film. The biggest struggle for these insights, in my mind, is getting awareness of them spread in a healthy way--considering their inaccessibility, the mental inertia of humans, and our society's media landscape. I don't have a solution to that. Still, I think that probably both recommendation and theory videos are worthwhile, as they're positioned to meet different, essential needs.

Here's some prime anecdotal evidence lol. The phrase "context sensitivity" is dropped regularly in games discussion among my friends. One of my buddies and I wouldn't shut up about it for weeks after the release of the video, and Tears of the Kingdom ignited extensive reflection on the idea.

I guess recommendations like Ghost & Goblins won't have much effect on patreons, but that's a very small portion of the audience. Most viewers probably haven't watched even one Ghost & Goblins stream, or read the Patreon posts about it. One part of being a patreon might be to get access to exclusive content, but just getting it early is fine by me. If you made a Ghost & Goblins recommendation tomorrow, that'd be what, a year at least that we basically got that in advance? One for Alien Soldier, maybe five years in advance? Far as I'm concerned, I won't feel short-changed if you make a video about a game that's more of a patreon/stream subject than a main channel one, even if that video won't contain any surprises for me. Not that I'd complain about recommendations for other games you haven't discussed much, either. Personally I think recommendation videos are inherently fun, it's nice when someone's love for a game can come through in a little video.
