Context Sensitivity

This video presents theories about general game design concepts. It’s not meant to prescribe a set of ideals which all games must follow. However valuable any guideline might be, it’s always (or almost always) possible to imagine a game which is made better by ignoring such considerations. A great game cannot necessarily be made just by applying a set of principles. This is a minor thing, but I was surprisingly happy to see games like the 2D Marios as well as Bowser's Fury and Odyssey turn up since they've been featured minimally on the channel before although the rest of the franchise was featured heavily.

I've watched this a bunch of times now, really interesting and thought provoking. And I'm happy to see your thoughts on camera systems as you've ranted about on streams have now made it into a proper video, haha. When thinking about Breath of the Wild I'd always thought what was so special about it was just how much interactivity there is with everything in the world; the lens of low context sensitivity presented in the video isn't one I had thought of exactly but it definitely helps explain why every interaction feels so natural in that game. Even though you didn't specifically talk about that aspect in your review, I feel like the points about what makes discovering Naydra special are at least touching on the idea -- the fact that it takes place within all the same rules and controls as the rest of the game makes it feel extra engaging, which is more or less what you said in the review. It's neat that part of this video felt kind of like an extension of that review. Was a pleasant surprise to see a new video from you, though I don't mean that to downplay or undermine all the game development stuff. All that stuff is great, but the fact that I wasn't expecting a video made it a nice surprise haha.
