Hello everyone,

I’ll be taking a break from the channel for the rest of January. The patreon will remain open in the meantime so it’s your call whether you want to continue supporting me or not. If so, you should think of it as a contribution for the videos I’ve made rather than the videos I will make though because I can’t promise I’ll be making any more.

As some of you have noticed, Meta Microvideos feels like an ending. The only question is whether it’s the end of an era or the last word altogether. I honestly don’t know yet.

Sometimes people ask how much longer the channel will run and I always estimate another year or two, after which I would presumably feel comfortable quitting. It took me a while to see the contradiction there, I ALWAYS estimate another year or two. By the time those two years are up, I have another two years worth of ideas I want to pursue. My estimate will be two years forever.

If it turns out that criticism is my calling in life, I can live with that. It certainly seems like the place where most of my skills intersect. Right now, I don’t think I could be as good at anything else which makes it a daunting prospect to try. Regardless, I have other aspirations which I’ve neglected so far and they’re nagging at me. Meta Microvideos seems like a good opportunity to hang up my critic hat or at least give it a little rest.

Granted, I have thought about quitting before so there’s a decent likelihood things will be back to normal in a month or two. It’s not as though the channel is a TV series which needs to end on a specific episode. There’s all sorts of reasons for or against continuing, not least of which is that I still have two years of ideas - good ones - that I’d be sad not to see finished.

I’ll update you again before the end of February. In the meantime I’d like you all to know that I’m doing fine and I’m delighted with the superb reception to Meta Microvideos. Apologies if this comes as a surprise but I wanted everyone to be able to enjoy that video first.

Putting this in a blog post makes it seem way more serious than it is, I just figured patrons deserve to know I won’t be working on the channel for now. Needless to say, if you want to pull your pledge, that’s understandable.

Whatever happens next, I’ll still be around so don’t worry too much. I’m just taking a break and assessing my options. Hope you’re all well and have a great new year.

Regards,
Matthew

I hope you enjoy your time off! I'll trust you to do what's best for you. I think whatever you do, a lot of us will support your decision. Thanks for everything you've done!

Anonymous

Just drop a line to say that I greatly appreciate all the videos you did. While I do selfishly hope your work will continue, in case if it doesn't, I want to thank you for all work done. Have a great year.

Reb Bartera

It's important to take breaks for yourself often. I'm glad you're finally giving yourself the time to do so. It's been nice being able to interact with you on Twitter and you are an incredible person. I hope you don't quit because you are leagues better than other creators on the platform and the quality of your work is outstanding. Here's to a new year and a good respite.

Mason Shivers

Thank you for everything you’ve made up to this point. Your videos have taught me so much about criticism in general and helped me learn to organize my own thoughts in a much better way. All of these skills can apply to other aspects of my life as well and I’m sure you feel the same way. I want you to keep making videos of course but don’t do it if you feel like you’re missing out on the rest of your life!

Anonymous

I think everyone supporting you will agree that they're fine with whatever you decide; personally, while I always enjoy your videos, I'm more interested in making sure that you're living your best life. If it happens to be away from criticism (or heck, even Youtube entirely), then so be it. :)

Viridian Maridian

You've achieved great things with this channel and most of us here would easily consider you the best games analyst out there. But it makes a lot of sense for someone to want to try different things in their life and with their career. I love the videos not because they're videos but because of what you specifically bring to them, so I'd look forward to ANYTHING you produce. Whether its game videos or games themselves or whatever else, I know that as long as you're passionate about it I'll be there for it. I hope you don't feel too much pressure this month and get to enjoy a period of well-deserved rest and introspection. Thanks Matthew :)

Anonymous

I did think to myself after the last video that it felt like you had almost grown out of critique and I was worried that you were thinking of ending it. . Whatever happens though we will respect your decision. Nobody wants to see you make videos that you don't care about and if you eventually run of out desire then stopping would be the best course of action. I will continue to support you as long as I can because of all the great content that you've given us over the years.

Anonymous

Obviously I'm here because I love your videos, but I've come to understand nothing lasts forever - even before that metavideos segment, lol. Bit early to start saying goodbye, but whatever you decide to do, thanks so much for what you've already done. Hope you have a good break!

matthewmatosis

I don't think it's selfish exactly, just practical from your perspective since there's no guarantee you'd enjoy anything else I might do. Just want you to know I understand. Thanks for the well wishes.

GenerallyHospital

Wow, it's hard to even imagine not having more Matosis every once in a while, but you have to what you feel is right. Thanks for tons of magnificent content over the years.

matthewmatosis

I'm a little disappointed I didn't get the video done before Christmas so I could enjoy the holiday properly but I'm making up for it now. I spent the last few days just playing stuff and it's been great so far. Good respite indeed.

matthewmatosis

It wasn't so long ago that games were being dragged through the mud constantly as something that would rot your brain. There could be truth to it in some ways but I've always thought they help boost critical thinking skills at least. You're always assessing your own play, seems like that would be pretty healthy for your mind. Anyway if the videos have had some similar effect I'm very glad to hear that, I always wanted viewers to engage with them that way.

matthewmatosis

So far I haven't managed to find a healthy balance between life and the channel. I'm hoping I can rectify that if I continue. Comments like this help relieve the pressure a bit so thank you.

matthewmatosis

Not to dwell on the new video too much but I think Meta Microvideos has helped convince me that these sentiments are real, for some of you at least. Moreso than my other videos it feels like something I made rather than making observations about the works of others. Even so, most people seemed to like the video anyway. I don't know that I can be as good at anything else since I've put a lot of hours into improving at this craft but it would be nice to try. If I do decide to try something else I hope it doesn't disappoint you.

matthewmatosis

I wouldn't say I've grown out of critique exactly. Like I said, I still have ideas I genuinely want to pursue but it's just dawned on me how that will always be the case. I'm not going to get a clean jumping off point so it's a decision I need to make for myself. I can assure you if I continue making videos it won't just be out of obligation. Hope this makes sense.

matthewmatosis

Yeah it's too soon to say goodbye. For now I'll just try to enjoy the time off. Thanks for the kind words.

I was searching for good critics to gain some insights on game design a few years ago and needless to say I settled for your channel. The way you seem to completely grasp the core of the games you review makes you so good at judging wether a game accomplished its goals or not. I don't think I'll ever be satisfied with another critic channel and I always felt like it was a shame that you did so few videos while understanding that you had your reasons. Would you mind if I asked why ? Did you only review games you were passionate about ? Regardless every critic was always entertaining and gave me some great insights and perhaps even helped me find my own way of looking at games. Now this might be the end but I thoroughly enjoyed your content and will continue to in the future when I inevitably watch your old videos. I wish you success and happiness in whatever you decide to do in the future (hoping that this will be your youtube channel still :P). Take care of yourself, have a nice break and thank you for everything :)

Anonymous

I hope you end up taking a pause and feeling reinvigorated and want to come back. Your videos are some of the most complete, detail-oriented and thought-provoking think pieces I've ever viewed. I've watched all of your content multiple times and every time I leave with a sense of completeness, like I absorbed new insight the second and third viewing that I missed on each previous watch. Regardless of what you do, we'll understand. We'll also just be very sad. I already have enough trust issues as is, Matt. :c

Finding a work/life balance must be really tough in a job like yours where (unless you have absolute confidence in yourself) you have to worry about how your next work will be recieved. It might seem like a rogue suggestion, but give life coaching a try if it's something you've been thinking about. As you've probably found out a thousand times in your line of work, stating your thoughts aloud to other people helps clarify them in ways you couldn't expect. If any of those "other aspirations" are programming, feel free to give me a DM for some help/lessons ;) Enjoy your break, however long it is :D

matthewmatosis

Passion is part of it but there's a few other reasons as well. First of all I wanted to avoid repetition across the channel wherever possible. I don't always manage to avoid that but at the very least I didn't want one video just be a carbo copy of another, that means I need to have something new to say. Secondly, you said that I'm good at getting to the core of a game. Maybe that seems effortless when you watch the video but it takes a lot of introspection, playing and even sometimes testing or fact-checking to arrive there. As an example, I think the key point I made about the new God of War was when I mentioned how Atreus should learn from the player's behavior as Kratos. That was actually the very last thing I wrote in the script. Now, you might disagree with that point - you have every right to - but for me it felt like the key aspect which could've tied disparate systems and goals together. Likewise with Death Stranding the very last part of the script I finalized was discussing equilibrioception. And so on and so on.

Anonymous

Whatever it is you decide, I hope you never stop creating. I want to be able to support and follow your creations for as long as you're making them.

matthewmatosis

I don't want to give you false hope but I think reinvigoration is a very real possibility, we'll just have to see. I'm glad you've enjoyed the videos so much either way.

matthewmatosis

I doubt there'll ever be a time when I'm not making something, one way or another. I don't know how to stop anymore.

Anonymous

Godspeed Matthew. I wish you good comfort and good fortune wherever you are. Should this be your retirement, let it be known that you'll be remembered fondly.

Anonymous

Whether or not it has to end here, it's been a pleasure seeing your body of work for the last however many years I've been watching. I've thoroughly enjoyed supporting you, whether that be tangible or not, and that continues to be the case so far. Best of luck on your future creative endeavors, whatever you decide to go forward with. For now, hope you have a wonderful break.

Anonymous

You're an inspiration. Live your life. You're my muse, Senpai. I wish you the best of luck in whatever you do next.

Anonymous

While I'd selfishly like to continue enjoying your videos until the end of time, I always expected you'd move on one day. If now is the time, it's been a great time and I'm glad I found your channel. You've really made me consider things in new ways, you've introduced me to things I wouldn't have otherwise found and you've made me appreciate the craft of game design more than ever. Thank you for years of great content. Whatever comes next for you, I wish you the best. Change is scary, but I think you've got this, should you move on from YouTube. Hopefully you can still stream from time to time, I need that sexy Irish accent in my life XD

Sent a few comments prematurely as I was struggling with this Patreon comment textbox thing so I'm sorry if it sent notifications or anything like that. Anyways, a few thoughts. I'd always imagined your endgame would be more "planned" and end on something like The Wonderful 101 commentary, but I suppose this makes sense in retrospect. If you do continue for a year (or two) I do hope you find an alternate, downsized way to cover Bayonetta & W101, but at this point suggestions seem almost meaningless. You'll cover whatever you gravitate towards and I'm 101% on board with whatever you have planned (or not planned) for the future. I have a lot more to say than that, but I prefer to save that for when actual retirement strikes (assuming you're not going full critic which will fuck up my plans, don't you dare). As a little side-thought, I think it'd be amazing if the last line ever said in one of your videos will be that of Meta Microvideos. Now go and enjoy your well-earned break. And don't even bother coming back until you beat Alien Soldier at least 8 times in one day.

Incaptivity

Wow, a lot to take in. I won’t make any appeals because it looks like everyone has covered the bases and asked the questions more eloquently than I ever could. I look forward to the February update. Enjoy the hiatus!

TectonicImprov

Matthew you've been one of my favorite channels on YouTube ever since some guy linked your bioshock video years ago on /v/. As I've watched your videos improved and improved to the point where I'd consider you my favorite video maker/game critic/what have you online. You're a genuine inspiration, I hope to write something as wonderful as Meta Microvideos or the like myself someday. If this is the end, then at least the channel is ending on a high note. Thank you for the videos Matthew.

SteveReen

Whatever you decide to do, I'd like to continue to support if I can. Having followed since somewhere in the midst of your Mario series, your videos have always stood out to me as uniquely insightful even compared to other similar channels on YouTube. You've had a pretty strong influence on how I think about games in general; I really appreciate all the work you've done. Meta Microvideos would be a hell of a note to end on, so at least it wouldn't feel unsatisfying if that is what you decide to do. Thanks again, enjoy the time off and good luck with whatever you do going forward.

Anonymous

I'll be very sad to see you go, I genuinely believe your videos are the very best videos on youtube. Meta Microvideos was absolutely inspiring and thought provoking, and made me even work on my own little critique blog that I've been neglecting. Whatever you decide, I hope that you do whatever brings you joy in life, and if Meta was your last video, then at least you learned from the wise George Costanza, and left the room after a successful joke, rather than sticking around to ruin it. All the best, happy new year.

Anonymous

Would be sorry to see you leave. But then I can't imagine how much work goes in to each and every one of your videos, so I understand I hope it's not truly the end. Thank you for all the recommendations, particularly Rain World

Anonymous

I'm not that sad to see you leave since I know whatever you will pursue its going to be of quality. I am happy that there was someone out there who took video games seriously and critiqued them as an actual art form rather than a toy. I loved the recommendation videos a ton, i played rain world and ghost trick because of it. Those two games actually changed my outlook on what makes good game design. For some reason i can't get into zachtronic though, whenever im playing spacechem im always thinking "Doing my own side projects is harder and more useful than this". I hope you enjoy your vacation, the only thing that I still want to see are game recommendations!

Richard Rosean

If this is the end of the channel, I'll obviously be very sorry to see you go. I'm not exaggerating when I say your videos are the best criticisms on video games ever written and my favorite part of the internet. That being said, I hope this gives you the chance to work on something more creatively rewarding. I know how often you've talked about wanting to make a game, so with any luck this hiatus gives you the chance to spend more time on that. If there's anything I'd love to see more than a new Matthewmatosis video, it's a new Matthewmatosis game. Whatever you decide on, you should know your channel-and the streams-have given me an insurmountable amount of joy since I discovered them almost six years ago. If you didn't make another video for ten years, I'd be more than happy to continue supporting you all that time. Until then, enjoy the break and Happy New Years!

Anonymous

As far as I'm concerned, you truly are the best there is. I can't begin to thank you for the entertainment and insight you've provided me over the years. I can't stress the word "insight" enough. Your penetrating criticism and keen mind has always floored me, and that's coming from a professional game designer (but whatever, we kinda just fake it anyway). And it's always been wrapped up in the most deliciously clever scripts and editing. I bet you'll find success regardless of where you steer yourself. I sincerely hope that this isn't the last we see of the channel, but genuinely hope you do whatever is best for you. Enjoy your break! Keep safe and sane, sk8terboi

Matthew, you always inspire me to think critically about media. The passion in your videos is contagious. May you find fulfilment, wherever your ambitions lie. JUST GO FOR IT!

matthewmatosis

Thanks Graham, I'm pretty comfortable right now so I'll take a double dose of good fortune if you can spare it. Appreciate the well wishes.

matthewmatosis

Thanks for the support. It's been a good break so far, there always seems to be more games to play. Hope all is well with you too.

matthewmatosis

Hi Justin, I saw your message earlier, just wanted to let more comments come in so I could reply all at once. I'm touched to have been an inspiration but unfortunately I can't make you any promises about the future, I hope you understand. What I can offer is some advice. When starting out at something new it's always tempting to be over ambitious. At worst that can end up biting you so hard you just give up altogether so it's important to tackle something you think you can reasonably accomplish. This isn't me trying to discourage you - I think you should do whatever you want, passion arguably the most important ingredient - but remember to be realistic all the same. Start small and build up one piece at a time. Hope this helps and best of luck with your work, I'm rooting for you.

matthewmatosis

Always happy to foster more appreciation for game design, I'm glad to hear that. Whatever happens next, I'll definitely stream again sooner or later so no worries there.

matthewmatosis

I think it would be a disservice to Bayo and W101 not to cover them with the same rigor as DMC/VJ. I suppose this is something which should've occurred to me before posting the blog post but I always kind of considered the Bayo and W101 commentaries to be special cases. As in, it might take me a long time to finally do them but they're never off the cards, even if I was a full time game developer or something I'd be tempted to do those videos on the side eventually. That said, I do think the VJ commentary is a much better place to leave that series than the DMC one. The two videos form a nice little duology which feels fairly self contained, to me at least. We'll just have to see how it works out. And thanks for reminding to play some Alien Solider, I will definitely do that.

matthewmatosis

Glad you enjoyed Meta Microvideos so much, I'm very happy with how it turned out. I don't think there's any one silver bullet to becoming a better writer, especially if your writing then gets presented through another medium like with video analysis. The video editing and such is a large part of what makes something like Meta Microvideos work. If I could give one piece of advice though, it would be to learn to love the editing process. When I started out I loved writing new material and hated editing it. Now I prefer when I have something written and can just spend time refining it. I don't know if there's a way to force this mentality - maybe it just comes with time - but if you can get there I'd say that's the biggest hurdle. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and for the kind words.

matthewmatosis

Scrolling through these comments it's been fun to see the various jumping on points everyone has, I'm glad the Mario series picked you up. It would be nice to end on a strong note but I suppose Meta Microvideos will be there either way, hard to know how to feel about it yet. I'll try to enjoy the time off for now, thanks. Hope you have a good new year.

matthewmatosis

I can see where you're coming from with the Zachtronics stuff. Maybe I'm wrong but I think they can help build your critical thinking skills so it's not wasted time even if you don't get something tangible from it. Plus it's just fun not to have to worry about the testing environment and such. When I started hacking The Wonderful 101 recently, it turned out that writing Cheat Engine scripts is basically just assembly programming so I was thankful to have some Zachtronics games under my belt. Anyway, not trying to convince you to enjoy them, I'm glad you liked Rain World and Ghost Trick. They're all special games I think. I'll do my best to enjoy the vacation.

matthewmatosis

Thanks Richard, I'm still not sure what comes next but I hope you eventually get to enjoy it all the same, preferably well within the next ten years, I'm not getting any younger over here. I hope you have a great new year as well.

matthewmatosis

I'm glad to see the word insight highlighted there, it's definitely been a key factor in whether I pursue one video or another. I'm taking that as a sign of success. I think we all just feel like we're making it up as we go along sometimes, maybe that's not such a bad thing though. I hope the videos have been of some help to your work. My biggest aspiration is to help improve games themselves. One frustrating part of being a critic is that you can't accomplish that yourself, people have to listen to you and take it on board. Anyway I won't get too sentimental here, suffice to say, I appreciate you taking the time to watch my stuff. Hope you have a happy and safe year.

gibbdude

I'm glad to hear that you're thinking about what you, yourself, most want to do. I'm not so naive as to believe that I can speak for everyone when I say this, but I will be happiest if you pursue whatever it is that you care about most, whether that means no more videos, or even nothing more for me at all. I'm so grateful for all that you've uploaded. Should this post be the last I hear from Matthewmatosis, I won't mourn what could've been. Rather, I'll celebrate what already is. Thank you. Listen to and trust yourself, and I'm certain you'll figure it out. 👍

To be honest, the kind of commentary you provide in your videos is something I don't feel like I can get anywhere else. It's very unique to me and I appreciate it more than you could know. If you were to quit now, I'd be happy to have heard all that I have, and if you continued, I'd be excited for more. Even if you quit, I hope you'll return some day, because your voice in the gaming community is something I'd definitely wanna keep for many years yet. What you've created so far is something you can be very proud of, and if you feel like you've lost the spark to keep going, then I hope you'll find something in your life to reignite it some day.

Anonymous

seems like just yesterday you quit your job so you could focus more on the channel. i just hope if you decide to call it quits you wont be hurting for a new way to provide for your family.

Anonymous

Ditto what everyone else says. I've just signed up regardless of whether you make further content or not, as a contribution to the videos you've already made. The quality and insight of your criticism is remarkable, and I hope it brings you fulfillment, even if not where you expected to find fulfillment. I would love to see you reach a wider audience, or with a larger platform, because the quality of what you make eclipses that of most video game media and journalism.

Anonymous

Contrary to your implication, this hiatus announcement reminded me to finally sign up as a patron rather than give up the idea. I’ve enjoyed your insight on games (even those I haven’t played) and it’s helped me clarify and hone my own ideas on game design and the creative process. Even as opinions I might not agree with or even have experience to argue with, your videos have always been entertaining, thought-provoking, and fun to watch. I can only selfishly hope that you’ll return for more, but it’s clear that you’ll do great work and enjoy success in whatever medium you’re going to make your mark on. Looking forward to whatever it is, man.

Anonymous

I've never been able to support you the way I'd like just because of my tumultuous financial situation, but if this really might be the end I figured I needed to give you something for the hours and hours of value you've given me with your content. I can't remember where I started watching very well but I've been an avid fan for years and I just wanted to say that you've completely changed the way I view games, art, criticism and writing in general. I genuinely believe you've perfected the craft and I honestly don't know if anyone can live up to the hole you're going to leave in the scene when you eventually stop. This isn't meant to sway you, but it's how I feel. Your videos trim much of the fat that goes into a game and gets directly to the heart of it. They meticulously picks apart what makes it all tick so effortlessly that you've made a craft so many have struggled with look easy. So many critics tend to put themselves first, either through their strong personal biases or their personality routines, so I tend to cherish the few critics I can find that care to put the games in the spotlight. You put enough of yourself in there that the video felt distinctly like your creation but it never got so overbearing as to feel like the game was a vehicle for a comedy routine like so many other creators. Your editing style was subdued and laser focused on the subject without ever feeling lazy or half hearted. It always tied back to your script in big and small ways that felt like it was using the medium the best it could while keeping the game first. I've always liked the way your videos would reflect the game you were playing. The way you "forgave" Abby at the end of your TLOU2 video is probably always going to stick out in my mind. It was kind of ridiculous in a way that summed up that story beat so well. More importantly than all of that though it you always came at it from an angle of empathy for the people behind the product. So many other content creators would approach something like the God of War case study with malice but you navigated a harsh opinion with an incredible amount of grace. When the developers thanked you for that video it changed the way I talked about games on it's head. It's easy to make gaming content on youtube that entertains or performs, but you make the type of content that makes better games in the long run. I'll be excited for whatever you do next. Have a good break.

ChillyRama

You should be proud of what you have achieved with your videos. They have provided valuable insight and personally helped foster a more mindful approach when I reflect on games, I feel like I jump to conclusions less due to how well thought out your critiques have been. Also the recommendations you have provided have hit the sweet spot of not revealing too much yet highlight just enough to get someone intrigued. I can say with certainty you have served the medium well. I assume you are looking to move into game development, I wish you all the best whenever you decide to do so and would be more than willing to support your future endeavours.

Anonymous

I have to be completely honest. Normally you obviously would support someone in their decision in a situation like this, but you quitting would be a huge loss for Youtube, so I can only hope that you return... Your channel is my favorite on Youtube and I have learned a lot from your videos.

Anonymous

If he really moves into game development, that would be super interesting, but it doesn't have to be that, could be anything.
