So sorry to hear you're in pain. Please, take as long as you need to feel better.

On the Patreon thing: Maybe you could have credits at the end of the video for the patrons. That can incentivises donations.

Hey Matt, I think that small, light on analysis videos are a great way to fill in the gaps of content in your channel. I liked your impressions review, and I think you're underselling your content if you think that this is some kind of simple review that's not really up to your standards. I'd be happy to see more of such content!

matthewmatosis

Thanks but I just want to reassure you, it's really not a big deal, only hurts right now if I put weight on it. Just trying to make sure I don't waste more time in the long run by making it worse now.

The 'Impressions' video format is a very good idea, and worth pursuing in my opinion. A new format can be a refreshing change, and I think that was part of the appeal of Mega Microvideos. Not all ideas should be presented in the same way, and sometimes if you just have a short but interesting point to make on a game, a short format is the way to go about it. Also, I hope your wrist feels better soon.

The impressions idea does seem like a nice idea for a 'bite-sized' type of analysis, and a good way to fit in those curiosity games most people wouldn't talk about. On that note, I do have a fondness for Twinkle Star Sprites so hearing your impressions of it was nice.

Hey Matt, I'm pleased to hear there's another megamicro compilation in the pipe. That format is very fresh and feels unique to you. It's almost like video essay poetry. That being said, please take the time you need for your wrist - I can speak for most of your fans when I say: I much prefer you take some time to focus on your health rather than push yourself and end up getting hurt. Take care!

matthewmatosis

Maybe I'll re-title the Sonic Dreams Collection video as an Analysis and title these new ones as "Thoughts on...". Dumb thing to get hung up on but I'm just trying to figure out what exactly I'd like to do with them.

Please make those impressions videos that was fantastic. Something you gotta realize is that, at the end of the day, your videos are still more art than science. You’re a great writer. That writing, no matter what your opinion is or how sure of it you are, is what make your videos shine. You are definitely too use to “chunky” videos. A short and sweet impressions video that’s actual well written would be a welcomed introduction to not just your library, but the industry as a whole.

That impressions format is great. The fact that it's short does nothing to lessen the value of your analysis and what was said. Take all the time you/your wrist needs to feel better, that's what's most important. Thank you for doing an update, take care!

I went back to some of your earlier videos not long ago and you have grown IMMENSELY as a game reviewer and video essayist. I don't want to say you've peaked or anything, and you certainly shouldn't rest on your laurels too much, but I have to agree with your Partner that you don't need to be so hard on yourself. At the end of the day it is your channel but I might suggest a period of "experimentation" rather than simply nixing everything you aren't 100% happy with. You might find a path you never thought to pursue, like the Mega Microvideos style video.

Take care of yourself, Matt! Don't feel like you have to hurt yourself just to make us (or the hyper-productive part of your brain) happy. Love your work, it's always worth the wait. Also, absolutely down for "Impressions" videos, and, like you said, I don't think the clutter will be too much of a problem, especially if they've got a consistent unique moniker. The format feels almost like a more articulate version of a full IGN review (which just goes to show how much higher quality your standard reviews are overall when compared to so much else). You're right that 5 minutes can't possibly have the depth of insight (unless focused on literally only one mechanic or something) that your 20 - 40 minute reviews have, but there's nothing wrong with that (though I do hope you'll never *entirely* stop giving that depth). Your videos can have more than one purpose. And I've no idea if you watch Errant Signal, but I think it's kinda serendipitous that both you and he (for different reasons, no doubt) have been slowly coming around to finding ways to review what you called "Curiosity games." The formats aren't exactly the same by any stretch (his is expressly for games with little press), but it's a fun bit of multiple discovery nonetheless. You're already the best game critic out there! Experiment however you see fit!

I got Twinkle Star Sprites on gog years ago and couldn't get into it despite being a pretty big fan of traditional shmups. You had an interesting take on it, specifically why cpu opponents can be frustrating. Also, the audiolog format was kinda nice. Another example of you trying to push things forward I guess, but I think what most people like your channel for is your consistency and insight, so I hope you don't let yourself get TOO hung up on the medium you deliver information through. Looking forward to your future videos.

surasshu

this is just me, but when i hear the word "impressions", for whatever reason i interpret that as "i'm not done with this game, and i'm giving more or less unfiltered thoughts on it in the midst of playthrough" . i agree that "thoughts on [title]" seems like a better fit. i hope your wrist heals soon! if you're interested in more 1v1 shmup/bullet hell games, ZUN actually attempted it twice in his touhou series ("phantasmagoria of dim. dream" and "phantasmagoria of flower view")

For your wrist I'd recommend vitamin D/Calcium supplements and fish oil, I've found it helps a bit as I've had a similar thing occasionally.

Some of my favorite comments I've heard from you on games have come from small comments you've made during streams, so I love the idea of having some smaller "impression" videos like the Twinkle Star Sprites.

matthewmatosis

I'm in the process of trying to turn the "context sensitive" thing I talked about during the SotN stream into a script of some kind. Lately I've been looking backwards a bit and thinking about stuff I never explained on the main channel. There's probably a good few ideas to mine from myself.

matthewmatosis

One nice thing about being a redhead is that you're never low on Vitamin D. I'll consider the fish oil if it persists though, thanks.

matthewmatosis

Thanks for the responses all. I'm going to try writing a few more mini reviews like the Twinkle Star Sprites script. I'd prefer to get a few ready before I turn that one into a video though because it'd be a bit weird to just throw it up by itself. I like the idea of using them as gap fillers between more elaborate projects which will hopefully lead to more consistent uploads. These things don't always work out though so please keep your expectations low. It'll probably be a while before we see results, if at all.

gibbdude

I think that a lot of the beauty of his writing comes from painstaking refinement, though.

gibbdude

Please make sure that you treat that wrist issue well. I'm not sure what the cost of this might be in Ireland, but you should definitely see a doctor if issues persist. The last thing anybody wants is for you to get CTS and have your ability to play games and use a computer severely limited. If money is really an issue, then I hope that I can speak for most when I say that we'd be willing to help you cover the cost.

gibbdude

I have no problem with you doing more short-form videos. I'll probably always prefer the longer stuff, but if it would be beneficial to your productivity and/or state of mind, then I would want you to make more short things. Also, it's possible that putting out content more regularly will actually be better practice and yield better results than beating your head against a massive script for so long. Don't feel pressured to make any changes because of your viewers, though. One of the most fundamental rules of product design is that people are rarely able to tell you what they actually want. It's best to experiment to see what works for you and us.

I like the idea of 'little impressions' videos but not to the point if they become the only content.

Hey Mathew! Who knows if I will be passionate about the game for the next commentary but i am for sure passionate about you. So you shouldn't need to worry about it much. Also the small "thoughts on" was great! Might help that over played done Twinkle Star on Fightcade some, but it was cool just to hear the big bullet points on a game that wouldn't normally have enough for a full review.
