Hi all, thought you might like to see what arrived today, my Super Nt.

Although I've played plenty of SNES games over the years, I've never actually owned the system. There was a one console per generation rule when I was growing up.

I don't like buying stuff second hand and this thing has HDMI out which makes it perfect for two reasons, it's new and it can be used for high quality video capture. Currently I don't have any SNES videos planned but maybe it'll lead somewhere, only one way to find out. Looking forward to crossing a few more things off the backlog at least.

I've been playing with it for a few hours and am impressed with it so far. If you're wondering why I picked this thing it's because the emulation is done through an FPGA which allows for much more accuracy. It's my understanding that it's on par with Higan, which is the gold standard, so it's basically the same as a real SNES, just scaled up for modern displays. The price is fairly steep but so far it seems well worth it.

Feels weird not to include an action shot so here's a picture of Castlevania Dracula X, although if you want to see the thing in action there's plenty of videos out there.

While I'm at it, you might've noticed that Mega Microvideos had some 3DS footage. Years ago, one of the very first things I bought with pledge money was a 3DS capture kit.

Even though I had no plans to use it at the time, it seemed like a good idea to have it on hand so that if I ever needed it, it would be there. (Not unlike the Super Nt now.) Maybe that was frivolous of me - it cost quite a bit - but it was nice to finally put it to use recently. I like getting my own footage for things, although it does set me back sometimes.

It looks like a normal 3DS except for this USB port grafted on, that's where it hooks up to the PC for display. I don't know if I'll ever get more use out of it but it's nice to have the option, hopefully you agree.

Anyway, that's all I have to say for now, I have some games in urgent need of playing. Many thanks for making this possible, both the Super Nt and the 3DS. I'll probably order a Mega Sg in the run up to its release so maybe I'll show you that one when it arrives as well.

By the way, if you have any SNES games you want to recommend, now's a good time. I've done a lot of research but maybe I missed something good. Feel free to let me know.

Good choice of scanline filters! Have you considered a setup gallery?

My Marvelous Year

Spanky's Quest is a Natsume developed puzzle-ish platformer-ish action-ish game focused on one unique mechanic: Your character (a monkey with a baseball cap) shoots a small bubble out of his head that arcs up and falls. You can keep it in the air by bouncing it on your head, and each bounce makes the bubble larger. If the bubble makes contact with an enemy (all sentient fruits and veggies), it stuns them for a few seconds. Now, the interesting part: if you press the bubble button while the bubble is out, it pops and releases one or more sports balls, which is the only way to kill enemies. The amount. configuration, and type of sports ball released is based on how many times you've bounced the ball on your head and how big the ball has gotten. So, while running around the level, dodging enemies and grabbing keys, you're also keeping this bubble up in the air, and you're rewarded for keeping it up longer. A unique and solid aesthetic, a cool jazzy sountrack, and a 2ish hour playtime based around one singular mechanic makes for a real hidden gem of a game. Mickey's Magical Quest is also an underrated platformer with a really dynamic, ever evolving tool set.

A game I don't find people talking about often is Super Adventure Island II. It's a major departure from the Adventure Island formula and instead feels like a spiritual successor to Zelda II of all games but that's why I like it so much. I'd check it out if you like Zelda II as much as I do.

There actually isn't any scanlines enabled, it's just whatever way the camera lens happened to catch the screen. I'll probably play around with scanlines at some point but I've already decided if I capture any footage from this thing it won't have any filters. That way, there's technically always the option to watch the video on a CRT instead. I'm pretty happy with just the basic SD2SNES listing at the moment but maybe I'll look into a gallery later. I have a Retropi setup and I do like the way that menu looks, it's nice to see the boxart, not sure if that's possible on a flashcart or not.

Not a big fan of Zelda 2, although I don't hate it the way some people do either. I'll keep your recommendation in mind but it's not calling out to me right now, sorry.

Druida

Recently I learnt of a SNES game released in 2013 that I've been meaning to try, Nightmare Busters, maybe you don't know about it. Seems like it's very heavily focused on the coop aspect, though. From my own experience, if you haven't played E.V.O. Search for Eden, I'd recommend it. It's very grindy but there's a special charm to it and I can't think of many games like it.

I think it may be worth looking into Umihara Kawase. It's a bit plain visually, and can get difficult quick, but the fishing pole the game is based around is fantastic.

I only learned about Nightmare Busters yesterday myself. Am curious to give it a try. Also found out about a new NES game called Micro Mages that's coming out, looks pretty good. Will be researching what other modern games might be worth looking at as well.

If you haven't gotten a chance, Wild Guns is a great game if you'd like a blend between shooting gallery and run and gun genres.

I'm going to give it a try because I've heard good things but I imagine I'm going to end up comparing it unfavourably to other shooters since I'll be using a D-Pad. Maybe there's still some cool ideas worth experiencing though, suppose that's the whole point of this expedition.

I recommend U.N. Squadron from Capcom. Great side scrolling shoot-em-up with an amazing soundtrack. Should still be fairly cheap too

Hyperzone is a fun little SNES game I don't see people mention often. It's short but quite fun and imo one of the cooler games on the system. Also takes like zero investment to play which is nice, very arcade-like. Definitely recommend checking it out.
