Plan for 2019 (Patreon)

Now’s a good time for an update.

TL;DR: Current plan is do another writing retreat like last year. From now until January I’ll be writing as much as possible, getting a headstart on next year’s videos.

It’s been a good year for the channel but all good things come to an end. In January I had 14 scripts planned for this year but sometimes the plan has to change. Mega Microvideos was originally a two-parter which got katamaried into something bigger. That leaves 3 more which have yet to be seen, here’s what’s up with them:

One is scrapped. It was a short recommendation video which didn’t do justice to either the game or the genre it was part of. Maybe it’ll get recycled at some point but for now it’s gone.

One is in limbo. This one is a new format which already makes me wary about doing it but I’m also not sure if video is the right medium to convey the message, I don’t think many people would be interested in it, it’d be time consuming to work on and I’m just generally not sure whether I should go ahead or not. It may be better to spend that time on other projects instead.

One is coming along alright. It’s a standard review, it’ll probably still happen, it just needs some more time.

I had hoped to get even more done this year but the Zachtronics series was more time consuming than I anticipated. Still, I’m very happy with how it’s gone overall, I think it’s fair to say the time I spent writing last year really paid off. I’m planning to do the same thing again and have decided that now’s the time.

There’s some good news too. First of all, this was the year of the backlog for me. I crossed a bunch of important entries off my list. It’s probably best I don’t say what they were so as not to cause any confusion about what games I’ll be covering. I don’t plan to cover any of those games - it could happen - but the goal is just to increase my overall knowledge and confidence when talking about games in general. Suffice to say, it’s been a great year for that. Not only did I put out more videos than the last few years, I finished more games too. I’m hopeful this increased knowledge and confidence will allow me to write videos more quickly than before.

Secondly, I have several new scripts in the works already, including a finished recommendation video. I’d put that one up ASAP except I’m waiting for a patch to come along. Even though I don’t think it’ll make a difference it’s best to see what they add/change before I go ahead. All in all, I’m reasonably confident I know what at least six of next years videos will be about, it’s just a matter of writing until I’m satisfied.

I’m torn between the desire to push out as many videos as possible this year (I’m close to beating my high score) but also wanting to dedicate more time to scripts in progress and lay the groundwork so that next year has a chance to be as good as this one. I don’t like to disappear for months - it certainly doesn’t do me any favours with the algorithmic overlords - but it’s the most effective method I’ve found for getting stuff done.

It’s been about a year since I moved to the new place and it’s played a huge role in increasing my general wellbeing and productivity, your contributions are responsible for that. You’ll never know what a big deal this was for me, to say I’m immensely thankful would be an understatement. I’ve been doing this long enough now to know I should never make promises, I really can’t say what’ll happen next but I’ll try to make next year even better than this one.
