Yay! Episode 7 is next, one of my favorite episodes of violet evergarden.

Roboton

Yooo, you're spoiling us!

MasterOfPuppets

Yes. Perfect to cry myself into sleep ...😂 Gosh I love this show although it really hits me hard at times.😍😍😍 Thanks to everyone who suggested it. Wouldn't have watched it otherwise. 👍

Stefanie

The word "desu" at the end of her introduction "Violet Evergarden desu" could be translated as "I am" or "is me". It's word that's used to confirm that you are the person who the name belongs to. So you could translate the sentence as "I'm Violet Evergarden." I hope that helped 😊

Mango

Gonna take a while but can't wait for episode 10 reaction :,)

Aizensalami

Her smile... 😢❤️. "Desu" is like a suffix at the end which means like "am/ is/ are" in a formal tense. She always speaks in formal tense even with her colleagues. "Da" means the same in an informal tense. "Desu" & "Da" come at the end of the sentence. She's just saying "I am Violet Evergarden" formally.

KaijinGarou

Ep 5 made me a little uncomfortable with all the wedding between the 14-year-old girl and the 24-year-old man, sending love letters to each other and everything even if it's a different world and culture, but a nice couple of episodes overall.

Matt Rhinehart

The show only gets better and more impactful from here

Roboton

I'd add "time period" as a possible explanation as well as to what might explain the practice of child marriage. It appears child marriage wasn't that uncommon even in our world not all that long ago. Put in perspective - a lot has happened in recent history. Doesn't make it less uncomfortable though, but that's looking through our more modern spectacles. People probably didn't think too much about the problematique it actually represented concerning agency, maturity, power-dynamic and so on at the time.

KaijinGarou

Yeah I know it isn't unrealistic. It still happens in some places but it's still awkward to watch. And I was hoping for the show to present it as something negative at some level and it didn't. At least they didn't show them kissing or anything and I want to believe the prince is decent enough to wait until she's older for that kind of stuff even if they get married now. Luckily this is the only uncomfortable episode of the show and the upcoming ones are very good.

Jason

Leon's VA is Thorfinn's VA! Just so you know:^)

Roboton

For sure. I guess the focus was elsewhere, but that just makes the choice of displaying this kind of "relationship" a bit odd. I can't speak to what the prince would do, but generally, irl, it wasn't that thoughtful. Yepp, lots of good ones coming up!

Gabriel Barott

I think there's always room to explore the complexities of something like this in society before our modern day, but I agree. I just think that when most shows display a much older man wedding a young girl, it's usually placed there as realism, and the show is assuming that the audience is seeing it as a negative thing. With Episode 5 though, the show seemed to do the opposite, and romanticize it, making it seem like it's beautiful and sweet, which is just off putting. It's also hard to make an argument for the "time period" when the show isn't real and is set in a mostly fictional world. This is just one episode though. The rest of this show just has me sobbing tbh xD

Ordinary Guy

My favorite episode is episode 11. Can't wait to see you guys react to that episode. On the side, you remember the Archery anime opening that you reacted to on Golden Jellie video? They're the same animation studio as Violet Evergarden, KyoAni (Kyoto Animation). They are so well verse with making wholesome series.

Sid V

Just FIY, >:) Astrology is pseudo-science hocus-pocus, and Astronomy is the actual scientific study of celestial objects and the universe.

KaijinGarou

Yeah I don't hate the episode and definitely didn't ruin the show for me but I would have preferred a different approach. I enjoyed the other aspects of the episode but probably my least favorite.

KaijinGarou

Yes, that's just the problem I had, that they romanticized it. But well, it didn't ruin the show for me as I mentioned. It's still very good.

KaijinGarou

I honestly thought I missed an OVA between ep 5 and 6 but I guess that ending was just foreshadowing.

Gabriel Barott

Ange doesn't trust anything about this show LOL He is so used to the tragedy of many different anime, that he's already resorting to "he's going to rip her arms off"

Amrith

Gabriel, I guess this was the gripe that you wanted to convey in Discord. Perfectly acceptable to find the setting off-putting but the "time period" and especially given that they were royalty, it's pretty standard practice just to ensure peace between kingdoms.

Amrith

I think Ange trusted Eren way too much and that character definitely did a number on him. LOL

Jake Thompson

I think Leon misinterpreted why his mom left, she didn't leave because she loved his father more, it's because she loved Leon so much she went to bring his father back. He just couldn't understand it as anything other than being abandoned and her picking his father over him.

Kevin T

No wayy, I am born in 95' as well Ange lol. I always figured you were older because of the facial hair xD

MADHOUSE

Fellow '95 millennial here. FYI Flugel, the prince, was voiced by TsudaKen (Nanami). He sounds very different here, probably because he had to voice the character with a bit higher tone lol. Ange is a rizzler, Carlie confirmed! The comments above me already explained the "~desu" copula (just learned that that's a word) meaning pretty well. Just to add some examples to Aizensalami's explanation: For Ange, "Boku (or Ore) no namae wa Ange da" and for Carlie, "Watashi no namae wa Carlie desu". I changed it up between you two since I think Ange would want to sound more masculine and informal, while maybe Carlie wants to make it a bit more formal, which is very normal btw. If I tried to relate these examples to VE episode 6, Leon spoke in an informal manner (you notice he doesn't use "desu" at the end of his sentences) and Violet spoke very formally. Idc if you guys are throwing random Japanese words/names/memes around your house. I'm just glad you guys find it funny/entertaining enough to use it 😄

Nawaf 99

EP 7 is coming guys😭💔, my favourite ep in the series along with ep 10

Sarcaamstic

Leon is best boi, he has that cute sorta rizz.

cell

The brother found her on a battlefield fighting and decided to take her back and (according to what I saw someone say once) some of his men tried to assault her so she killed them

Roboton

Leon and Violet's exchange in episode 6 is why I love this series. It really shows how Violet grows by meeting different people. She learns to define the feeling of loneliness and he learns about how much love can mean to someone and how loneliness and fear of losing it can affect one's decisions in matters of love; why his mother left, despite the risk.

Martina

I just realized Violet is like ChatGPT haha

Martina

I totally thought you guys were older than me btw! I guess it's cause you're married haha. but I'm actually one year older than Ange! that's cool, I am your boomer source, like when I'm explaining all the old pop culture references from JJK or Steins Gate 😄

TetraLuna

'96 babies woo!

adam

that last scene of ep. 4 with alberta and the princess is soo sad and powerful

Stories thru art

:D I love that Carlie calls us her Golden Jellies!!! Such good reactions! Your both so funny.

WuXian Suibian

Fun little fact, Leon's Voice actor from EP 6 is Uemura Yuuto, who you'd know better as Thorfin from Vinland.

Meg B

It's a bit late for the discussion but I'm '98 and deep down in my soul I'll always be a millennial

Meg B

"Desu" is the equivalent of the verb to be (approximately). For example if I say "Watashi no namae wa Meg desu" = My name is Meg (desu = is). So when Violet says: "Violet Evergarden desu" she's saying "I am Violet Evergarden". So it's not an idiosyncrasy on her part xD

TerraZetzz

'94 represent!

Driscollis

astrology 😭😭😭 y'all it's *astronomy*

Frozzen Edge

Episode 5 isn't working for me

Happy Tortilla

I just LOVE that episode. Leon is one of my favorite character. After meeting violet, he truly want to change. I don't know, why but each time he say; Can we watch the stars together if we cross path again? with his teary eyes. I tearing up too. and wich him the best

Milosz Skowronski

It's probably the most controversial episode of the series, so even after 8 months I feel obliged to explain some things that were left untold in the anime adaptation: 1. The princess is 14, but Violet clearly isn't. I mean you can see it from the difference in their physiology, but also how the show frames them together. Violet said "people told me I'm around 14" because of the way she acts. She's obviously underdeveloped for her age, but she is definitely not 14. 2. The story of how she gets to be taken in by Gilbert's brother is never explained in the anime, but if remember correctly she's a stowaway they picked up from a supposedly uninhabited island, and she went berserk after a few of the crew members tried to... you know what they tried to do. She killed them all and for some reason she subjugated to Gilbert's brother. Then, she made it to Ladenschaftlich where she was "gifted" to Gilbert.
