Storyboarding seems like such an enjoyable task. In a way, I feel like it translates the language of words into the language of pictures. It's like being a 'dream translator' for someone's dreams or thoughts, which makes me want to give myself a whimsical nickname like that. Lately, as I work, I find that this nickname seems more fitting, and it's becoming increasingly enjoyable for me.

Just as we use our languages following grammar rules, artists drawing pictures reconstruct the work visually using the grammar of the visual language, allowing viewers to read the artwork with their eyes and hearts. Visual grammar has a different structure from written language; it operates by revealing the emotions behind the dialogue and bringing them to life on the screen.

This 'subtext,' the unseen changes in emotions, is a crucial element that breathes life and movement into characters and stories in a piece of work. And the highs and lows of this movement are what we call the emotions 'beats.'

But when faced with the script or the story we want to convey, it's easy to get distracted by dialogue, the surrounding background, or even describing the characters themselves. So, we often find ourselves repeatedly drawing, changing, and erasing a scene. Sometimes, even if a composition feels right, we might have to discard it because it doesn't fit the content. Today, I wanted to talk about a method that can be used in such situations – 'Beat Boards.'

'Beat Boards' refers to bundling the key scenes into one frame before the storyboarder actually pitches the work. It serves as an explanatory tool and also becomes a starting point for a good brainstorming session.

To execute this, we follow these steps:

1. Describe the essential scenes from the script in writing.
2. Illustrate the required mood, direction, and composition in these crucial scenes.
3. Fill in missing information to match the dialogue's content.
4. Rearrange in sequence.

Through this process, we can assign importance to information in advance, avoid wasting time on unnecessary shots, and create various shot variations.

This week, I focused on refining all the thumbnails with Beat Boards. I've also found fantastic background music that suits each scene. After editing, I think I might have a 15-minute short animation containing about 6 minutes of musical content.

I've accomplished more than half of the goals I set last week: enjoying Christmas, tidying up all the thumbnails, and finalizing the sketches for the musical scenes! 😊 Hopefully, by January 4th, I can share even more!

2023 has been a truly eventful year for me. I finished a webtoon, started new projects, faced challenges, and experienced failures. But ultimately, it's been a year where I found the strength to rise again, and I've felt many new emotions. I'm genuinely happy to have concluded this past year by compiling these thumbnails. 😊 I recognize that I wouldn't have reached this point without all of you.

스토리보드는 참 재미있는 작업인것 같아요. 어찌보면 글의 언어를 그림의 언어로 번역해주는 일을 한다고 느끼거든요. 또 그 글이 누군가의 꿈이라던가 생각을 담은 창작물이라는 것을 생각하다보면, 혼자서 '꿈  번역가'같은 괜스레 낭만적인 별명을 붙여주고싶은 일이에요. 그리고 일을 하면 할 수록 점점 그 별명이 쏙 들어 맞는 것 같아 재미를 느끼는 요즘입니다.

우리가 문법에 맞춰 각자의 언어를 사용하듯, 그림을 그리는 사람들은 시각언어의 문법을 이용해 눈과 마음으로 작품을 읽을 수 있도록 재구성합니다. 시각언어의 문법은 글과는 구조가 달라서, 대사 뒤에 숨겨진 캐릭터의 마음을 읽어 화면으로 풀어내는 식으로 작용합니다.

'서브텍스트'라고 하는 이 눈에 보이지 않는 감정의 변화는 작품속 캐릭터와 스토리를 살아있고 움직이게 만들어주는 파도를 만들어주는 중요한 요소에요. 그리고 이 파도의 높낮이를 감정의 '비트'라고 하구요.

하지만 막상 스크립트나 표현하고자 하는 스토리를 눈앞에 둔 상황에서는 대사나 주변 배경부, 혹은 캐릭터 자체의 외관묘사 등에 정신이 분산되기 쉬워요. 그래서 한 장면을 계속 그리고 바꾸고 지우고를 반복하거나, 마음에 드는 구도가 나와도 내용상 넣을수 없어서 버려야하는 일도 허다하죠. 오늘은 그럴때 활용할 수 있는 방법인 '비트보드'에 대한 이야기를 해보고자 해요.

'비트보드'는 스토리보더가 실제로 작품을 피칭하기 전 주요장면을 한 장에 묶어서 표현하는 작업을 말합니다. 설명을 위한 작업물이기도 하지만 한편으로는 좋은 브레인스토밍의 시작단계가 되기도 해요.

따라서 이 작업을 하기 위해서는 다음과 같은 과정을 거칩니다.

1. 스크립트의 중요한 장면을 글로 풀어쓴다.

2. 중요장면에서 필요한 분위기, 연출, 구도 등을 그린다.

3. 부족한 정보들을 대사의 분량과 일치하게 붙이거나 나눠서 채워넣는다.

4. 순서대로 재배치한다.

이를 통해서 미리 정보의 중요도를 할당할 수 있고 쓸데없는 샷에 시간을 낭비하는것을 막으며 다양한 샷 베리에이션을 만들 수 있습니다.

이번주에는 비트보드를 중심으로 기존의 썸네일들을 다시 전부 다듬는 과정을 거쳤습니다. 그리고 각 장면에 어울리는 멋진 배경음악들도 미리 찾아두었구요.

가편집본을 보았을때 대략 6분짜리 뮤지컬 영상이 담긴 15분짜리 단편 애니메이션이 나올것 같네요.

저번주의 목표였던 크리스마스를 즐기기, 썸네일 전체 정리하기, 뮤지컬 장면 스케치 마무리하기 중 목표의 반이상을 이뤘습니다! 😊 말씀드렸던 1월 4일까지, 더 많은 것을 공유드릴 수 있으면 좋겠네요!

2023년은 정말 다사다난했던 한 해 였습니다. 

웹툰을 마무리짓고, 작품을 시작하고, 아파보기도 하고, 또 실패 해보기도 했지만, 결국에는 다시 일어날 힘을 얻게 되었던, 저에게 있어서는 정말 새로운 감정들을 많이 느끼게 해준 해 였던것 같아요. 그래도 썸네일을 묶어 정리함으로써 올 한해의 마무리를 잘 지은 것 같아 정말 기쁩니다. 😊
