Hello, fellow Pipers!

This week, I'd like to talk about 'visualized' musicals.

What exactly is 'Video'? It's a medium that combines moving images and sounds, offering us various visual information and joy. The visual content we commonly see around us usually falls into two categories.

Focusing on the narrative, 'cinematic video' 

Cinematic visuals organize stories in real-time scenes, considering a single space as a single scene. It's the direction often used in movies or dramas, employing techniques organized as the 'grammar' or 'visual language' of video to narrate stories.

Leaning on music, 'music video-style video' 

Music video-style visuals showcase the visuals in sync with background music, irrespective of time and place. It uses techniques like montages, connecting various places, situations, and times into one cohesive theme, emphasizing interest over content or emotional transmission.

These two are more about the degree of inclination rather than being special cases. They influence each other, providing visual 'entertainment' in various videos. This becomes particularly evident in musical video productions because musicals rely heavily on both music and narrative. Consequently, the direction of musical scenes varies greatly, depending on the director's choice. It leads to diverse decisions, whether relying on the actors' abilities, choreography, flashy effects, visuals that match the music, emotional changes among characters, or story-related elements.

 Since we're all accustomed to today's visual media and it's used diversely, it's not easy to consciously distinguish before watching. While analyzing videos this time, I discovered a mistake I've been unconsciously making—avoiding directing emotional scenes of actors (characters). Perhaps the reason was ambiguity. Until now, my directing involved interpreting emotions I felt from the musical's songs or emotions portrayed by the actors. It required confidently expressing these feelings, and creating convincing emotions within the songs I made turned out to be a much tougher task than I expected. So, I'm diving deeper into feeling emotions and rearranging necessary information.

Despite varied directions in the examples above, they share a commonality—the lyrics' words and themes manifest through acting, dance, backgrounds, props, etc. This made me think that perhaps the difficulty in scene directing was due to the lyrics of the music not being set for a long time.

Reflecting on this fact, I feel an overall clearer direction is starting to emerge in the videos.

Recently, I dreamed of a complete animation with color and sound, hanging on the Broadway screen. I couldn't believe a high-quality piece came from my hands (in my imagination), but this vague longing arose within me to complete a wholesome animation.

Additionally, as I entered the final stages of the other project work offer I've been working on, I had more time to invest in Pipers, allowing me to organize the thumbnail direction from start to finish. So, by next week around December 14th, I might be able to share a compiled animatic sketch video clip!

이번주에는 '영상화'된 뮤지컬에 대한 이야기를 해보고자해요.

'영상'이란 무엇일까요? 

크게 움직이는 이미지와 소리의 결합으로 나타나는 이 매체는 다양한 시청각 정보를 담아 우리에게 즐거움을 선사합니다. 그리고 우리가 주변에서 볼 수 있는 영상 콘텐츠는 크게 두 종류로 나뉘어지지요. 

 1. 서사에 집중하는 '영화식 영상'

영화식 영상은 주로 한 공간을 한 씬으로 여기며 스토리를 실시간으로 따라갈 수 있도록 정리해둔 연출을 사용합니다. 우리가 흔히 보는 영화나 드라마에 주로 쓰이는 연출이고, 오랜시간 영상의 '문법'이나 '시각 언어'로서 정리된 기법을들 이용해 이야기를 설명하는 방식의 영상이에요.

2. 음악에 기댄 '뮤직비디오식 영상'

뮤직비디오식 영상은 배경음악에 맞추어 시간과 장소와 관계없이 영상을 화려하게 보여주는 연출을 사용합니다.  흔히 몽타주 기법이라고 하는 기법을 사용해서 다양한 장소, 상황, 시간대를 하나의 음악이라는 공통점을 가지고 이어서 내용과 감정의 전달보다는 흥미 위주로 연출 하는게 특징이죠. 

이 두가지는 특수한 케이스가 아닌 이상 기울어진 정도의 차이일 뿐, 서로 영향을 주고받으며 다양한 영상들에 영상적 '재미(엔터테인먼트)'를 주기 위해서 사용되고 있습니다. 그리고 뮤지컬 영상연출의 경우 이런 부분들이 정말 두드러지게 나타납니다. 왜냐하면 뮤지컬은 음악과 서사, 그 모두에 크게 기대어있는 콘텐츠기 때문입니다. 때문에 뮤지컬 장면들의 연출은 지극히 감독의 선택에 따라 달라집니다. 그리고 그렇기 때문에 더더욱 배우의 역량에 기댈지, 안무에 기댈지, 화려한 이펙트나 볼거리에 기댈지, 음악에 맞춘 화려한 편집에 기댈지, 캐릭터간의 감정변화나 스토리에 기댈지, 다양한 선택을 하게 됩니다.

우리는 모두 오늘날의 영상 매체에 익숙해져있기 때문에, 그리고 다양하게 조합되어 활용되고 있기 때문에 의식해서 보기 전에는 구분하기 쉽지 않습니다. 저 또한 이번에 영상 분석을 진행하면서 지금까지의 잘못하고 있던 점을 발견하게 되었는데요. 바로 요즘의 제가 무의식적으로 배우(캐릭터)의 감정 연기 장면의  연출을 기피하고 있던 것 입니다. 

아마 그 이유는 모호함 때문인것 같은데요, 그 동안의 연출작업은 뮤지컬 노래를 들으면서 제가 느꼈던 감정, 혹은 배우님이 구현해낸 감정을 내가 재해석해서 그려내는 과정이었기에 확고하게 표현해야할 심상이 있는 상태에서 작업을 했었습니다. 하지만 제가 직접 만든 노래 속에 감정을 설득력있게 구현해내는 것은 생각보다 더 어려운 과제라는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 그래서 좀 더 깊이 있게 감정을 느끼고, 필요한 정보들을 재배치 해보는 과정을 진행해보고 있습니다.

또한 위의 예시들은 다양한 연출에도 불구하고 가사의 단어와 소재가 연기, 액팅, 배경, 소품 등으로 드러난다는 공통점이 있습니다. 그래서 더더욱 지금까지 장면 연출이 힘들었던 이유는 음악의 가사가 오랬동안 확정되지 않았어서 일지도 모른다는 생각이 들었습니다. 

이런 사실을 반영하고 나니 전체적으로 좀 더 방향성이 잡힌 영상이 만들어지기 시작한것 같습니다.

얼마전 완전히 채색되고 사운드가 입혀진, 완전한 애니메이션을 만들어 브로드웨이 스크린에 걸리는 꿈을 꿨습니다. 멋진 퀄리티의 작품이 제 손에서 나왔다(는 설정)는게 믿기지 않으면서도, 막연한 동경심이 함께 들면서 하나의 온전한 애니메이션을 완성 해보고 싶은 마음이 부풀어올랐습니다.

추가적으로 작업하고 있는 외부 업무가 마무리 단계에 들어서면서 파이퍼즈에 투자할 시간이 늘어 썸네일 연출을 처음부터 끝까지 한 번 쭉 정리할 수 있었습니다. 그래서 다음주인 12월 14일쯤에는 애니메틱 스케치 영상 클립으로 묶어 공유드릴 수 있을 것 같아요!
