Episode 30, Behind the Scenes of "The Only" is here!

This episode had its own ending in mind since I started drawing episode 1.

It was about "Wendy playing the flute to help Eugene and the two of them reconciling." This scene was clear in my mind throughout the process, which helped me stay on track. However, even though the scene remained the same, the content changed significantly.

Originally, it was a story where Eugene, who is subjected to racial discrimination by drunken gangsters on the subway, ends up in a fight. Wendy was supposed to appear magically, playing the flute, and there was a comedic scene where she wins by swirling the flute around unexpectedly. But as I worked on it, I realized that abruptly inserting something like "gangsters engaging in racial discrimination" as a cliché in the final episode didn't feel appropriate. It felt too heavy and unrealistic to suddenly add comedy. So, I pondered on how to create a crisis situation to include in the story.

However, based on the previous episodes, we couldn't immediately create a story of reconciliation. Wendy had caused too much pain to Eugene. So, we needed a scene where Eugene expresses anger towards Wendy. Because sometimes, if we don't express anger, the emotions can consume us. But by adding such a scene, we had to switch the mood from light to dark, and then again from dark to light. As a result, we had no choice but to double the length of the work.

Another concern was the perspective. It was challenging to decide whether to focus more on Eugene or Wendy through the camera. Because both Eugene and Wendy were the protagonists of this episode. Depending on whether I showed the emotions of "Wendy rescuing Eugene" or "Eugene's fear" in the scene of playing the flute, the overall feel would be different. So, while adjusting that feeling, I had to ensure that both perspectives were understood. It was quite difficult, and it required a lot of editing, but I was pleased with how well it came together.

And thus, Chapter 6 comes to a close. The key message I wanted to convey in this episode is, "We may be different, but we are equally lonely. So let's not fight and become friends! And no matter who you are, I will help you pursue your dreams." Here, "we" can refer to different races, genders, disabilities, or differences in gender identity, in my opinion. I hope that the carefully chosen message is effectively delivered.

에피소드 30 '유일한'의 비하인드 씬입니다!

이번 에피소드는 1화를 그릴때부터 생각해둔 나름의 결말이었습니다. '유진을 돕기위해 피리를 부는 웬디. 그리고 화해하는 둘'. 이 장면이 작업을 하는 내내 머리속에 또렷히 있었기 때문에 길을 잃지 않을 수 있었어요.

그런데 장면은 같아도 내용은 많이 차이가 생겼습니다.

원래는 지하철에서 술취한 깡패들에게 인종차별을 당하는 유진이 싸움을 하게되는 이야기였습니다. 그리고 웬디가 구해주기위해 마법같이 연주를 하며 등장해서, 엉뚱하게 피리를 휘둘러 이기는 개그 장면이 있었으면 좋겠다는 생각을 했습니다. 하지만 하다보니 '인종차별하는 깡패'같은 클리셰를 마지막화에 갑자기 끼워놓기는 어울리지 않는다고 생각했어요. 갑자기 개그를 넣기엔 분위기가 무거워서 현실적이지도 않았구요. 그래서 어떻게하면 위기상황을 만들어 넣을까 많은 고민을 했습니다.

하지만 이전 에피소드들을 보면 바로 화해하는 스토리를 만들수가 없었어요. 웬디가 유진에게 준 상처는 너무 컸거든요. 그래서 유진이 웬디에게 화를 내는 장면이 필요했어요. 왜냐하면 가끔은 분노도 표출하지 않으면 소모되는감정이니까요. 하지만 그런 장면을 넣다보니 밝은 이야기에서 어두운이야기, 어두운이야기에서 밝은이야기로 두번 분위기를 바꿔야했어요. 때문에 작품 길이를 2배로 늘릴 수 밖에 없었답니다.

그리고 또 고민이었던건 시점 입니다. 카메라에 유진을 더 비출지, 웬디를 더 비출지 선택하는것은 참 어려웠어요. 왜냐하면 이번화는 유진도 웬디도 주인공이었거든요. 피리를 부는 장면에서 '유진을 구하는 웬디'의 감정을 보여줄지, '유진의 두려움'을 보여줄지에 따라 크게 느낌이 달라졌어요. 그래서 그 느낌을 조율하면서도 두명의 입장이 다 이해가 가게 만들어야 했습니다. 참 어렵고 편집이 많이 필요했지만 노력한 만큼 나름 잘 정돈된것 같아 기뻤습니다.

이렇게 챕터6이 마무리가 되었습니다.

이번 화에서 전달하고 싶었던 핵심적인 말은 '우리는 다르지만, 똑같이 외롭다. 그러니까...싸우지말고 친구가 되자! 그리고 네가 어떻든 꿈을 꿀 수 있게 도와줄게' 입니다. 여기에서의 '우리'는 다른 인종들이 될수도, 성별이 될수도, 장애의 유무가 될수도, 성정체성의 차이가 될수도 있다고 생각해요.
