These are the scenes corresponding to the initial sketches. I drew them once, but I wasn't satisfied, so I had to redraw all of them. The original plan included everything from Eugene's childhood memories to the aftermath of the incident. However, if I followed that plan, the incident felt too rushed and didn't evoke the desired emotions. So, I wanted to depict Eugene's emotions as she accepts Wendy's betrayal by portraying the entire episode as if it were happening inside Eugene's mind.

Of course, young Eugene, who took on the role of a tree, was adorable... but the changed result made the artwork much deeper, and I'm satisfied with it.

Page 11:

The 11th drawing is an old sketch of Eugene's past idea. It was planned to unfold by recalling the situation when she dropped out of school due to Wendy's betrayal. However, I didn't want to show direct violence and conflict. As a result, it was discarded.

Page 12:

What expression would show the feeling of being betrayed? I pondered on this and sketched it several times. Betrayal is just one word, but when you delve into that emotion, you realize that it's a mix of various feelings. So, I tried drawing expressions of surprise, disappointment, and sadness, and combined them. I carefully blended the shape of the eyes and eyebrows.

To enhance the impact of this episode, there was a rule I followed throughout. Eugene "chokes up but never cries." I wanted the tears in this incident to have a stronger impact.

This episode is truly important in terms of the story.

As it deals with heavy and melancholic themes, it couldn't be overly burdensome. However, it wasn't a light-hearted story either. It's not just the characters' story, but "someone's story" in general.

Moreover, this work could be completed with comments and responses from many people. So.... it holds a deep meaning for me as well. I don't think it would have been possible without your support and encouragement. Thank you always, and I hope you have a wonderful day today! 💕

오늘은 에피소드 27화, '선택' 의 비하인드 씬을 들고왔어요!

후반부로 갈수록 작품을 수정하는 일이 잦아서... 이런 장면들이 많은데 일정때문에 못 보였던 부분들을 정리올려보고자 합니다.

1~10페이지

초기 스케치에 해당하는 장들입니다. 스케치를 한번 다 그렸는데 마음에 들지 않아서 전부 다시 그려내야 했어요. 기존의 기획은 유진의 어린시절 회상부터 사건 이후의 대여 플룻을 떨구는 다음화 내용 까지 전부 담겨있었어요. 그런데 그렇게되면 사건이 너무 급박하고 감정에 이입이 되지 않았어요. 때문에 웬디의 배신을 받아들이는 유진의 감정을 보여주기위해 한 화 전체를 유진의 머리속 안에 집어넣은 듯이 그려내고자 했어요.

물론 나무 역할을 맡은 어린 유진은 귀여웠지만... 바뀐 결과가 훨씬 작품을 깊게 만들어 준 것 같아 만족스럽습니다!

11번째 그림은 옛날에 그려뒀던 유진의 과거 아이디어 스케치입니다. 웬디의 배신에 과거에 학교를 자퇴했을때 상황을 회상하며 전개할 계획 이었어요. 그런데 너무 직접적인 폭력과 갈등을 보여주고싶지 않았어요. 그 결과 파기되었답니다.

배신을 당한 표정은 어떤 느낌일까? 그런 생각으로 스케치를 몇 번 진행했습니다. 사실상 배신은 한 단어지만, 그 감정을 들여다보면 여러가지가 섞인 감정이니까요. 그래서 놀람, 실망, 슬픔에 해당하는 표정을 그려보고 세가지를 섞어보았어요. 눈의 모양과 눈썹의 모양을 적절하게 섞었지요.

이번 화의 임팩트를 위해서 전반적으로 지킨 규칙이 있어요. 바로 유진은 '울먹거리지만 절대 울지는 않는다' 에요. 그래서 이 사건의 눈물이 더 크게 다가올 수 있게 하고싶었어요.

이 에피소드는 스토리 상으로 정말 중요한 에피소드였습니다. 무겁고 우울한 이야기를 다루는 만큼 너무 마냥 무거우면 안되었습니다. 하지만 그렇다고 가볍게만 다를 이야기도 아니었어요. 캐릭터의 이야기이기 이전에 '누군가의 이야기'이기도 하니까요.

그리고 이 작품은 많은 분들의 공감과 반응으로 완성이 될 수 있었습니다. 때문에 저에게도 정말 뜻이 깊은 에피소드였어요.
