Hello, fellow Pipers!

Do you remember the moment when a work of art changed your life? It's that moment when tears well up, and you think to yourself, "Someday, I want to create something like that." I truly understand that feeling because I've been there too.

Those powerful emotions have taught me so much as they entered my heart. I've learned about friendship from Wicked, conflict resolution from Steven Universe, and unwavering determination from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Without those moments of inspiration, big and small, I wouldn't be who I am today.

Pipers is a project that combines my desires, experiences, and values. However, bringing a great creation to life is not an easy task. Especially when you find yourself doing it "alone." It requires various skills, a lot of learning, and taking good care of your mental well-being, finances, time, and health. Gathering a great team of collaborators is also a challenging endeavor.

But you know, "difficult" and "impossible" are different words, aren't they? I intend to keep pushing forward, falling and getting back up, and overcoming each obstacle that comes my way.

In fact, when I finished working on the webcomic in May, I had a major setback and needed some time to recover. I'm doing better now, but still, falling down was a quite hurt thing to experience. That's why I've decided to document this "๐Ÿ“Pipers Production Diary" to share my journey.

There are two reasons why I chose to organize this project here.

Firstly, it's to keep those who believe in and support me informed about the process constantly. And secondly, it's to provide assistance to those who wish to embark on a similar path, so they don't stumble in the same places like me. I hope this record can serve as a guiding light, giving courage and insight to everyone dreaming of creating their own works.

Let's keep the journey going!

โœจWhat is "๐Ÿ“Pipers Production Diary"?

"๐Ÿ“Pipers Production Diary" is a weekly post shared in diary format every Thursday. It will focus on the development process of "the musical The Pied Piper animation" and the teething problems within the schedule.

โœจWhat can you gain from it?

  • Real production process of "the musical The Pied Piper animation"
  • Personal animated production process and trial-and-error experiences
  • Mindset and time management for creative work

Today's post covers the content that follows the process starting from early 2023!

[January]

In January, we started the actual production of "The Pied Piper" musical. We organized the plan and began raising funds for the production.

Wait... Isn't animation just about drawing and making things move? Why does it require money? You're right! Animation can indeed become a great work by "putting together multiple drawings" continuously!

However, the required time and money vary depending on "what kind of result you want" Animation production is divided into three main stages: pre-production, production, and post-production.

Pre-production

  • Planning and scriptwriting
  • Storyboarding and animatics
  • Concept art and character design
  • Concept art for backgrounds
  • Implementation of 3D backgrounds

Production

  • Animation (keyframes, in-betweening)
  • Animation (clean-up)
  • Animation (coloring)
  • Animation (shading)

Post-production

  • Compositing
  • Sound editing
  • Final editing

Pre-production is the stage where you organize the story and direction, gather materials, and include tasks like writing, sketching, creating animatics, character design, and background design. In the case of 3D, this stage involves rigging the characters so they can move.

Production is the stage where you add movement and engage in the actual production with the gathered materials. Animators animate the characters based on a comprehensive plan called an animatic. This step, where you draw frame by frame, takes the longest time.

Post-production is the stage where completed work is collected, edited, and polished. It involves compositing, adding brightness or effects, and organizing and finalizing the work from the production stage. This is when the final sound is usually added as well.

Given that animation requires various and difficult-to-master skills divided into specialized fields, it is challenging for one person to handle everything. So, does that mean you have to form a team to create animation? Not necessarily.

The composition of a team depends on how you plan the quality, abilities you possess, direction, and investment time.

[Example1]

Quality: Shorts

Abilities: Sketching, illustration

Direction: 2D line art illustrations in five poses

Investment Time: 1 week

With a plan like the one above, you can complete multiple works on your own within a year.

[Example2]

Quality: Between TV series animation and small-scale theatrical films

Abilities: Storyboarding, character design, animation

Direction: Dramatic musical direction utilizing both 2D and 3D

Investment Time: 1 year

However, with such a plan, you would need background artists, 3D background artists, composers, and animators to complete one work within a year, right? That's why it's not necessary to have team members for every task in the pipeline. However, knowing the pipeline allows you to easily differentiate between the parts you can handle alone and the parts you can delegate, making planning smoother.

In fact, the second example is information about the ongoing "The Pied Piper" musical. We needed funds from the early stages to collaborate with many people and create a more amazing work. Therefore, in the last week of January, I opened commissions to prepare for creating the music first.

[February]

And in February, we achieved the target amount through commissions faster than expected! (Thank you so much!) Many people not only commissioned but also generously gave tips or donations to support us. I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude once again. While searching for the next project, I was fortunate enough to discover a program that supports early-stage animation!

It was a great time to gather team members after preparing diligently!

[March]

We recruited talented and fantastic initial team members! To submit a proposal for the program, we needed a lot of information. Among them, these were the crucial elements:

  • Synopsis (brief plot description)
  • Character design
  • Main image
  • Concept art
  • Project production budget
  • Schedule
  • Team member information

*Detailed workflow of Character design and Storyline are listed in the Honor of Pipers reward!

Despite having only a two-week preparation period, we managed to pass the first-round document review!

[April]

We completed the story framework of the "The Pied Piper" musical, which was not fully finished. The only thing left was to present it in front of the judges.

To cut to the chase... we ultimately didn't succeed.

Partly because we were not fully prepared, and it was challenging to select works with production methods and existing storylines. Also, while juggling multiple tasks without rest, my health deteriorated, and I collapsed.

[May]

In May, I made efforts to recover my health. I focused only on meeting the webtoon deadlines without hectic schedules.

Taking some time to reflect, I realized the mistakes I made:

  • Rushed even though I was not fully prepared.
  • Gathered team members without being ready for delegation.
  • Worked with greed without setting priorities.

And I want to try resolving them in the following ways:

  • Establish guidelines for working together and divide tasks.
  • Prioritize scriptwriting and composition before assembling the team.
  • Seek help and assistance.

Moving forward, we plan to proceed at a slower pace with the following schedule:

June to early July: Complete the script and song

July: Complete concept art.

August to September: Complete the storyboard.

Additionally, we plan to take on the challenge of applying for a support program at a film festival in August or September.

To be honest, I had many concerns while writing this post. Sharing the process turned out to be more embarrassing and required more courage than I thought. However, it was only after stumbling that I realized I'm not on this journey alone.

I believe those who have become patrons genuinely value dreams. I guess that's why you took the time to visit and support my dream.

So, in this space, I hope it can become a place where we can prepare our dreams together.

Why do you create and love stories? Please share your thoughts in the comments!

*If you have any questions or concerns during the creative process, please send them to rambumupi@gmail.com!

I am super excited to see more of the journey youโ€™re taking to make this animation a reality! Regarding the question, stories have always been important to me in a way I canโ€™t describe. I love following characters' journeys and seeing how they grow, learn, and overcome challenges. I remember when I first decided to write a story of my own. Back then time I was stuck on world-building, but after a few months, that world was full of different characters and stories, and the joy it brought me to create all of it is something I hold close to my heart. Iโ€™m currently working on a personal project, a more focused story, and Iโ€™d lie if I said that there havenโ€™t been long periods where I had to rest because it felt like I was out of ideas, as frustrating as those periods are, Iโ€™ve learned to keep going and not give up, and working in this story and this character has been a journey of my own. I started it a few years back, and Iโ€™ve seen my writing and art skills grow alongside the story. That is an experience that can only be lived through storytelling. Creating is something so many people are scared of doing, but itโ€™s a wonderful process. I have to say, your work in The Pied Pipers has been a great inspiration for me. You're art, writing, and storytelling are fantastic, so thank you for creating this story!

Wow Saso this is amazing! Thank you for sharing your story here. Seeing your passion and joy toward making a story makes me feel excited too๐Ÿฅฐ Indeed, a personal project can be delayed and frustrating.... and ideas are not a friend who always comes to me. I'll consider the way to help your journey too! Good luck with your further journey!
