Chapter 005 – Soul Absorption

[March – 2008]

When I had first read the name of the reward given by the Gift Pack – One-Time-Use Path-Changing Ticket(Divine), I had thought that using this reward to its utmost potential would be near impossible in the short term.

Divine items, ores, weapons, and beings weren't something the current me could just approach. A good example of that was the True Longinus, the Longinus-Class Sacred Gear Spear, or Gugnir, Odin's godly weapon.

I knew that my Demonic Spear was capable of absorbing both of these objects even without activating the reward, as they were both spear-type weapons and thus fell under the category of Weapons Absorption.

The fact was though that I would undoubtedly be killed should I attempt to do so with my current power, as such high-ranking items were usually guarded by equally strong Supernatural beings.

It had been at that point that I had realized that there were exceptions to this rule and one such exception was carried around by a pervy teen who lived across the street from me.

Ddraig was definitely a being of the Divine-rank, and in his case, he had only his soul left, which was luckily sealed inside a Sacred Gear, meaning he couldn't use his own power to defend himself before I absorbed his soul.

This may seem ruthless to some, but it was the fastest way to power and consequently to personal freedom in this world filled with overpowered beings, just waiting to unleash their own personal hell onto Earth.

And while I had no particular grudge against the Welsh dragon, I certainly couldn't afford to be a merciful and good guy, not when my life and future were at stake.

Refocusing on the present, I felt the ethereal form of the Demonic Spear latch onto the struggling dragon's soul inside the Sacred Gear inside Issei's soul, his rageful shouts being transmitted into my mind.

"Who are you?! Do you know what you're doing?! DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?!"

"A stepping stone.", I answered calmly, as I felt the Demonic Spear completely encase the enraged Red Dragon Emperor's soul and cut off any possibility for Ddraig to answer, his soul slowly being absorbed into the weapon.

Withdrawing the ethereal spear from Issei's chest, I realized that he had fainted, probably due to the pain he felt in his soul at his Sacred Gear practically turning to dust without the Welsh Dragon's soul.

I wasn't too sure about that, but I also didn't really care at the moment as agony filled every fiber of my being. I didn't really know what was happening to me, besides the fact that the Demonic Spear was still absorbing the Heavenly Dragon's soul and transferring its essence and abilities to me.

Had I been not in so much pain, I would have probably realized that my actions had been a bit reckless, as absorbing the soul of a dragon, that was said to be able to kill Gods and Satans alike, wasn't something to be done carelessly.

The only saving grace was that nobody in the vicinity could sense the abnormalities happening inside my body and soul due to my Aura Concealment skill, not that I took note of that, as I fainted from the pain.

It was sometime later that I felt my senses return to myself and woke up. Supporting myself on my arms, I felt a grating unfamiliarity with my own body, while my heightened senses were oversensitive, causing me to be somewhat dizzy.

Gritting my teeth, I pushed through this uncomfortableness and rose to my feet. Seeing Issei still restrained and unconscious due to the attack on his soul, I heaved a sigh of relief.

Taking off the pillowcase and removing the piece of tape, I cut loose the rope, before grabbing the evidence of my actions and leaving the Hyoudou Residence through the backdoor, being careful with my strength output while doing so. I naturally didn't kill him, as that would just bring unnecessary attention to this event.

I could feel that my strength had made a major leap forward, but decided to wait until I was back home to check the messages in my mind.

Moving a lot less covertly to the backyard of my own home, due to being distracted by the over-stimulation of my senses, as well as the efforts it took to regulate my strength, I just flopped down on the wet grass and let the soft and cooling sensation soothe my strained mind.

Closing my eyes, I had a look at the notification that had popped up as a result of my actions.

Stunned by this first message, I realized that the Soul Absorption Path was a dangerous path toward strength. I hadn't expected a change of race, though it seemed as if this was the result of absorbing a soul.

Reminding myself to be more careful in the future, I wasn't too upset about the race change, as it had come with a substantial power-up. Leaving these thoughts be for the moment, I read through the second notification.
