With respect, on your opinion that you would rather it have "shown and didn't tell", it did over the series with Hohenheim spreading out his philosophers stone and his interactions with his family, especially in "Family Portrait". And also, Hohenheim had previously said that he has a countermeasure for his transmutation circle but he would prefer if it wasn't activated in the first place.
