On "He can blush?" I think it's supposed to be understood (or it's at least my own head canon that others share) that the face of the helmet doesn't actually change but for the audiences sake about understanding Al's emotions/etc that the classic expressions like blushes for embarrassment or big eyes for surprise are still animated. Similarly there aren't actually glowing eyes, it's another effect just for the audience. Just like all various "sound effect bubbles" that pop up in a few scenes.

I'm not mentioning anything not revealed yet in Brotherhood. 1904: Their father leaves... then they start to learn alchemy from his books... their mother dies (Ed is ages 5 by end of year, Al 1 year younger) 1908: Izumi takes the boys as students (Ed age 9) 1910: The boys try to bring back their mother and Ed spends time recovering from automail surgery (Ed age 11) 1911: Ed passes exam and boys burn down their house (Ed age 12) 1914 Spring: The boys expose Father Cornello in Episode 2 1914 Autumn: Where you are now in Episode 12. (Ed age 15)
