not directly related to this episode, but listening to it i started wondering -- is the civil war series going to include anything on reconstruction? a subject maybe bigger than the war itself & not the main focus of the podcast, but i really hope there's at least an episode or two on it

Amazing episode! I was just thinking yesterday when the next civil war related episode was going to drop and BAM here we are. RWN is magic sometimes. Off Topic: Anyone interested in buying a copy of Pleasant Hell?

Ok guys let's do wrestling with shadows for out poll.

Episode #204 from 2019 looked at Reconstruction as a dirty war. Good overview, but it's definitely worthy of its own series.

Consistently great content. Thanks again.

Any Popeheads here?

Great episode! Why does it seem fitting for Halloween? Ball's Bluff is maybe not a prominent enough event for an episode, but as a local in the area its a cherished story of McClellan being an evil coward. Also the battle saw the only sitting U.S. Senator to die in combat.

Wise Blood is the perfect Halloween movie.

Brad Dourif was incredible in the video game Myst III: Exile despite some fairly outlandish material.

McClellan was a bitch

The self importance of the southern-friendly generals and the frank disgust/ disdain for anyone other than their social class feels like a characteristic of current liberal class as well

On Mark’s side note on patti smith trying to ruin Blondie’s careers - that probably post dates when Patti answered an ad for a place in Blondie - Debbie Harry relates somewhere that she turned up and proceeded to discourse critical on how various arrangements of blondie songs would be better if that went like such and such - Debbie was like, ‘who f is this entitled bitch’ and she didn’t get a call back …

I would hope so. The period of official armed conflict between the Union and the Confederacy is only a part of the story, and you really need to understand the dirty wars fought beforehand in the territories and the successful Southern insurgency afterward to get the complete picture. A lot of Confederates went right on murdering Union troops and freedmen after the supposed cessation of hostilities, they just swapped out their gray uniforms for white hoods. I mean, if you don't talk about Reconstruction, you're left with the impression that the slavers and traitors lost the war. In reality, they might not have gotten their Confederacy, but they managed to at least hold on to their power both in the South and in the federal government, and the institution of slavery persists in all but name only to a large extent.
