The discussion of the term "existential threat" with regard to various jihadi groups misses the point. An existential threat does not mean a threat to our existence but a condition whereby something by its very existence poses an actionable threat. In US warspeak, and in the mouths of current policy apologists like Hillary Clinton, it's a rationale -- or from the counter-side a rationalization for pre-emptive action, an excuse to attack who or what's not actively attacking.
