I'm a little surprised you didn't bring up the Onslow "deep dive" incident, tbh. Great to have *finally* gotten you to do the O boats though, Jive. Thanks!

No, I was referring to the time the Onslow went to more than double her test depth in a crash dive, back in '72 (maybe '73).

I wanted to ask for some time now, Jive: Do you plan to make lectures about american subs in the future? I mean nothing recent of course. Just some very old, but intresting stuff, like the Skate class, Barbel class, or the legendary Skipjack class. That would be very cool. I know of course that this could be a touchy subject, but these ships were designed and built some 60 years ago.

Why do the Oberons have such a huge sail? Is there a design / tactical reason for it? It gives the boats a "comical" look to it.

So if you are wondering if the aft tubes on Canadian Boats were loaded. Apparently not. When I was a teen I was lucky enough to talk to a O-Boat submariner and he said they stored beer in them. I figured he was pulling my leg, but I just had it confirmed by another O-boat submariner "Used to put beer and pop in them but after Soup refit the tube were gone but we used the COT( used to replace the weight of a fish with water). That held 446 cloth gash bags of pop and beer( i know this because I ran the canteen)"

As a tourist I went onboard HMCS Ojibwa in the late 90s. I was impressed by how tidy it was. I had also been onboard the Foxtrot-class museum ship B-39, which had a similar layout but showed much more decay.

The successor to the Oberon class was the Upholder class. A short service with the UK followed by transfer to Canada. Also a cold war warrior. That should make an interesting sub brief!

I managed a visit to the Onondaga there in Quebec. What a fascinating experience. One part I loved was seeing fire control in the control room. Epic!
