The first HAN SSN began sea trials in the Yellow Sea in the mid 1970's.  We had assets in place to observe her testing. The Yellow Sea is very busy with fishing trawlers and coastal merchants running up and down the coast. This made finding her difficult, not because she was quiet but because she was just as loud as the merchant ships.

Our submarine was tracking the HAN SSN submerged as a light merchant due to it's noise signature for hours before they realized there was no surface ship on the bearing of the contact.

Han is a poor design, by Western standards, very loud and has limited capability.... but she is good enough to submerge, drive and surface.  Good enough is the goal for the PLAN fleet.
