i’m kinda in denial that this is his last album but I wouldn’t be shocked if it is

Brock Asher

Someone leaked pictures of Kendrick recording this music video like a year before the album announcement. It was a shot of him above the ocean and sitting by the telephone booth. And everyone was freaking out and confused when the pictures were released

It's definitely his last album on TDE and as a result, I do think he doesn't see himself continuing in the same album cycle game that he was into while on a label. I don't think it's him retiring or quitting as an artist. I think it's him saying "There's a new chapter for me, and I'm going to find it." Like many before him, I would not be surprised if at some point he gets some inspiration to sit down and put down tracks to a record. Maybe even start doing them semi regularly. But I see him following a sort of Jay Z type path. He's made it. Did the work, got the T-shirt. He doesn't have to prove shit or do shit for no one. Now he still might spit when he wants to but the songs drop when they drop.

CRASH

How does the wifey find the album?

Jeremy Trull

"You're not gonna look energized if you're nailed to a cross" lmao love it

I make music videos for a living, and trust me don’t worry about not getting it 😅. Most of the time you’re just trying to come up with images that loosely feels right thematically for the song, cool shots that could get people talking and add some cool performance shots.

I liked wifey's interpretation of the cover. And congrats on the 2000 patrons!

I TOTALLY forgot to mention the 2k Patrons thing. I was pretty tired last night... Thank you! All of you ❤❤

bobthepoppop

Yeah, I'm going to talk about this a lot during my additional thoughts video tonight

She had it on while we were on a small road trip last weekend. We had to turn it off when Mother I Sober concluded because she couldn't see... too many tears (hard to drive). I don't know her exact opinions of it, but it certainly reached her the way it reached a lot of us.

Psykopomp

shoutout to the wife for joining you on your hip-hop ride. she could've easily dismissed this as a silly hobby but instead she's been open-minded and supportive. MVP.

The way I interpret Kendrick's position, gun, face of concern, etc in the album cover is that it almost directly correlates with this line on Worldwide Steppers: "Playin' Baby Shark with my daughter Watching for sharks outside at the same time Life as a protective father, I'd kill for her" There's various topics throughout the album regarding the role of a father, and how they act in a dangerous environment with kids around. Still, very interesting interpretations from both of you guys!

The album cover is clearly inspired by the famous picture of Malcolm X where he's looking out the window holding a gun. Malcolm X was protecting his family from death threats during his final days in that picture and I think Kendrick is just protecting his and his family's well-being too. That's actually a common theme on the album, "I choose me, I'm sorry."

deeply recommend watching this hilarious but perfect video by the Mallory Bros, TPAB vs MBDTF which compares and deeply analyzes those albums. They breakdown these albums in ways you may not have heard before. https://youtu.be/nekqepD9Bk4
