As the first Comedy Central season of Futurama rolls on, it's time for the series to cover a world-changing gadget invented in the years Fry and the gang didn't grace your television screen. Yes, "what if [character] get smartphone" may seem like a common premise for modern-day reboots, but Futurama was doing it nearly 15 years ago. So how does this all relate to a pool brimming over with puke and poop, and singing sensation Susan Boyle? You'll have to listen to find out! Afterwards, we'll shut up and take your money.

I loved the T-Mobile sidekick so much I got a sidekick tattoo

I am also doing the same thing with trying to limit the amount I have my phone When I have my nightly movie watch I have caught myself obsessed with finding out every fact of the film that I end up missing shit and I have to rewind it So I literally put my phone in another room or I leave it on the other side of the room and I try super hard just to focus completely on the movie in front of me

Not the Craig Ferguson slander. Lol! But I agree, he could’ve played a better character on here. He’s also on How to Train Your Dragon and I think Brave so voice acting is in his wheelhouse. The Late Late Show was actually a really good show when he hosted it unlike James Corden which I couldn’t really get into it.

I don't think I've ever felt older listening to a podcast than when Bob was explaining what a Sidekick was. My first iPhone was the 4 because of the no-AT&T thing. Prior to that I was a Blackberry guy, which was fine and functional back then, but those trackballs they had for navigation did not last long. It was pretty wild seeing how quickly Blackberries disappeared in Boston back then as the iPhone came into being. I can't remember the last time I saw a Blackberry in the wild. I'm currently in the midst of stretching out my iPhone X or XR or whatever the hell it is. It basically has no storage space and the battery is about 70% of what it used, but I've had it for almost 5 years now so I'm curious how much longer I can take it. This episode might be considered a Futurama classic just because of the meme it spawned. I just wish it didn't have the stupid Susan Boyle plot. It was a good look at phone culture and it's appropriately dated as its a fun reminder of how fast technology moves.

Every once in a while I would pull up clips on YouTube! Him and Conan were my favorite Late Night Talk show hosts.

This episode actually aged much BETTER than I thought it would (besides the Susan Boyle jokes just being unnecessarily mean for no reason). Maybe it felt much more Boomer in 2010, and *some of it* still does, but a lot of their concerns about what Apple and others might be doing are still things they're trying to do while we all scream NO at them and ask them to do anything useful

my memory of this one is seeing the goat stuff and thinking "oh...did I really want more of Futurama if this is the kind of material we'll be getting now?" and then the Susan Boyle stuff reinforcing that. which is a shame because the smartphone material was pretty prescient for just how deeply ingrained into our culture they would become. I wish it wasn't bogged down by vomit and boils! as with all things in life.

So all iPhone talk and apple do something evil today of course.

The dumb thing about buying tech in Canada is the eco fee. Don't get me wrong the eco fee is good, but it is based on screen size. If you buy a $400 55" TV, your eco fee is $15.50. The eco fee on a maxed out $2200+ IPhone Pro? 70 cents. I guess apple has more lobbying money then TCL and Hisense. "We are going to get an OLED for the brightness" made me burst out laughing at the sheer number of tech nerds it confused. "He's buying the right thing but for the wrong reason. Should I be mad?"

I also came here to express my fondness for that particular late night host. Early 2010s I watched almost every morning the previous night's episode on a YouTube rip. I've got a lot of love for that man, his puppet friends, and his robot skeleton sidekick.

The Susan Boil crap is so mean-spirited and uncharacteristic for the show. Futurama and the Simpsons have had plenty of mean jokes (Jared, Greg Kinnear, David Schwimmer, Bill Maher), but doing a whole subplot just feels cruel. It feels like something better suited for MadTV or South Park. Did the commentary say anything about how this subplot came into being?

Mario

The cough at 22:48 was cute, thanks for keeping it in.

I'll never understand the Apple love, especially from intelligent, liberal folks like yourselves. From the slow, proprietary cables to the refusal to adopt the better RCS protocol for messaging. They continually attempt to control and stifle, yet people are still obsessed. They're basically the MAGA of tech.

HermitJay

Just watched the first episode of the newest season. I can feel Henry and Bob's eyes rolling from the future.

DrKarate

Related to "old Twitter", I was late to social media as a whole, and when people asked why I wasn't on Twitter/Facebook/whatever, I always said "I don't eat interesting enough sandwiches"

I wouldn't reccomend crossing the street without looking like Homer did. Drivers make right hand turns without stopping or checking for pedestrians here constantly.

Elliot

Yeah Craig was one of a kind. You can still watch any old interview from the show and it hold up. Much better than standard prepped anecdotes.

Elliot

Am I alone in thinking that doing this to leela was so fucking cruel and out of character for fry. I get there are stakes but it's really really really mean and I think she forgives him way to easily.

notsmohqe

no offense but you guys sound like Beatles hipsters trying to tiptoe around Louis CK. Dude is funny, and probably on the “Mount Rushmore” of standups for Millenials. ‘Louie’ further cements him in a tier above Oswalt imho

I don't think we're Apple evangelists; we just reluctantly accept the tech ecosystem we initially bought into. (And I upgrade my phone every 4-5 years.) I've actually been using Android tablets since 2013. Though I will say Macbooks work best for the kind of work we do. Every other laptop I've purchased has been garbage in comparison. - Bob

Bob Mackey

I'm being completely honest about never really liking his stand-up or shows all that much. (Though I'm sure he's written sketches and Conan bits I've enjoyed.)

Stephen C. Nedell

Having only bought Android mobiles, I've never paid more than 300 dollarydoos. I'm also accident prone and managed to kill at least 4 phones through stupid actions. I also had the honor of meeting Billy West at a con in August 2013 and he signed my autograph with "Shut up and take my money!" and considering how much I paid for the photo opp, it may have been a bit of a good natured dig at my fandom.

I can relate with Nina’s indifference to changing TVs. We currently use a Sharp Aquos 46” LCD that only has 2 HDMI ports that I bought in 2009. It still works perfectly and despite its age, I don’t really see a need to replace it. Friends have larger smart TVs and yeah, they’re nice and cheap too, but what will I do with the one that still works perfectly if I replace it? Also, a blackberry was my intro to smartphone world in 2009 because I had Sprint and couldn’t get the iPhone. There was a pretty good miniseries on the creation of the Blackberry that came out recently. As Canadians, you should check out the series about that early Canadian tech triumph!
