growing up in southern protestant churches I was always taught x-mas was actually a Christian tradition because Christians did that in the era of the roman empire when they were persecuted.

Oh man, I was also raised Catholic and had to attend CCD. The worst part was that those classes were held on Saturday at my church. So with that and being dragged to church on Sundays, my weekend mornings were ruined. Thankfully I was allowed to drop out after my first communion and did have to go all the way to confirmation.

I have never been more in agreement with you than when you both went off on werewolf

I had to go to CCD when I was a kid too. It was on a week day afternoon though and just at a neighbor's house. They were volunteers and would just instruct 4 or 5 of us kids in the ways of the lord or whatever. I didn't mind it, I liked my neighbor and was friends with his daughter and the other kids so it wasn't bad. Then at some point it moves from that environment to the church itself, and since it was on Sunday nights and would interfere with my Simpsons/King the Hill/X-Files viewing it was a non-starter for me. In a way, the Fox Sunday night lineup is responsible for me no longer having a religion.
