This week, we've got a dose of girl power as Harley and Ivy team up in an episode that's certainly about empowerment and not the fantasies of any particular writer and/or artist. When Harley briefly breaks up with The Joker, she finds a new partner-in-crime in Poison Ivy, who tries her best to turn her new friend into an independent woman. But two forces threaten to break up this strictly gals-being-pals relationship: Batman, and the Joker's co-dependent hold on his clown girlfriend. So listen in to hear us discuss this chilling tale of abusive relationships and the best way to deal with cat-callers!

Fatman on Batman has turned into a new show called Fatman Beyond to mark the transition! At the time of my comment his most recent episode is a double grieving episode of Black Panther 2 and Kevin Conroy. On another note, this episode made me realize somehing We need a What A Cartoon Movie of Batman and Robin. It's time. It is the most live action cartoon movie of all time.

Your bit about Batman saying you should vote instead of doing eco fascism reminded me of that moment in that awful Batman: Harley Quinn movie from a few years ago where Harley’s flippant answer to poison Ivy’s bit about protecting the environment is “I don’t know! Vote democrat! Donate to GreenPeace!” This line offended me more than any double butt crack or batgirl banging Batman ever could.

Prior to this episode, I didn’t care much about Harley Quinn, but after watching this episode, I fell in love with her. I love reading her comic books and watching any animated series and movies with her in it. Her and Batgirl are my waifus lol.

I am embarrassed and jealous that Bob figured out the holly/ivy thing and I did not. I have been made to feel inadequate.

This is like when Nina pointed out the Chrono Trigger parallel to Roswell That Ends Well.

With the reference to “Beavers” made me remember that growing up in south east Michigan everyone knows about Interstate 75 (I-75) on exit “69” is the road “Big Beaver” So yes, It’s quite possible for you in 2022 in Michigan to get off on Big beaver 69 lol Happy holidays Talking Simpsons!

I always loved this episode and the Harley/Ivy relationship that it led to. I even added some references to it into the LEGO Batman games. In LEGO Batman 3, if you team Harley and Ivy together, you get an Achievement called "New Queens of Crime" and, in LEGO DC Super-Villains, if you find a Gold Brick as Joker, he mentions his socks are still missing. We also had a cutscene in Villains where Ivy is more than pleased to have Harley staying over with her. A mere "wink" perhaps, but I'm so happy it's in there. That level is also called "The Harley and the Ivy" in reference to the old song, which I pointed out was already (sort of) done as the title of this episode, but they went with it anyway. Oh, well. I'm glad you both pointed out how important this episode is in fleshing out Harley's character. Rather than being an eternal doormat, we see she has talent and ambitions, a secret desire to become more than she is. I think that's one of the reasons Harley's so compelling; she has surprisingly relateable struggles. It's so easy to root for her but without pitying her or feeling that she's helpless. Accidental or not, what a great character! ^_^

Another episode that gave off queer vibes for me was "Feats of Clay". In that two-part episode we see Matt Hagen/Clayface's close relationship with his stunt double Teddy. Teddy genuinely cares for the actor and tries to get him to take better care of himself. When Hagen discovers he can shapeshift Teddy hugs his arm like a boyfriend might and excitedly says "we can go on", meaning Hagen can continue his career as an actor with Teddy by his side. It's clear that when Teddy thought about the future he saw them together, even if Matt didn't feel the same way. Unfortunately the friendship/relationship is over by the end, with Clayface tossing Teddy against a wall and storming out of their trailer. Later, Teddy mourns his friend, who was presumed dead. It feels like older movies in which gay relationships were always toxic and ended tragically.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who felt that arc could be read that way. Hard to know if the feelings are mutual, it could be Teddy longs for Matt, but it's not reciprocated. Matt is a bit of a user as we see in Mudslide when he uses a woman who clearly has feelings for him just to get what he wants. It definitely doesn't take much imagination though to pair Matt and Teddy as something more than friends.

FWIW, one of the many ways my podcast stole from Talking Simpsons is that we did a Patreon series called Cartoons That Made Us Gay and the Batman: TAS episode was Feat of Clay. I somehow didn't realize how Matt and Teddy are coded as a couple until someone pointed it out to me.

I was intrigued by Bob's comment about Rosebud & the clitoris so I did a little research. The rumor that Rosebud was the nickname William Randolph Hearst had for his mistress Marion Davies' "little man in the boat" came second hand from Gore Vidal who heard it from Davies' nephew Charles Lederer. Now we know he's kissed more boys than Lisa but can we say that Vidal knows what he's talking about? The claim was never verified so I'd say put it down as an interesting theory & a creepy visual to think of whenever I see that close-up of Kane's mouth & porn stache saying "Rosebud."

I was one of the people who crushed on Poison Ivy as a kid, which started with a Batman villains poster from Totally Kids Magazine. The first episode I saw her in was Eternal Youth, and along with Scorpina from Power Rangers and Carmen Sandiego, she also awakened my love for strong women.

Inspired by this podcast, and the fact that it was on sale, I read that Harley and Ivy comic by Dini/Timm from like 2003 and boy... it is way TOO horny for me, in the way that Timm really needs someone to reign him back a bit. I am absolutely not opposed to sex in comics and all that, but my god it seems like the comic was just an excuse for Timm to draw the duo naked in each issue in a way that feels like a sex comedy of the era. I would've found it LESS weird if they were written as lovers and the nudity was them enjoying each other, rather than it being gals just bein pals who happen to remove their clothing around each other a lot, platonically. Maybe it's partly just because now I'm so used to both characters being bi/pan and the comic was EXTREMELY hetero, but it rubbed me the wrong way.

I was in middle school when that episode aired and it definitely brought up some feelings I didn't understand. I remember thinking how nice it'd be to have a friend like Teddy. Doesn't help that middle/high school is when kids are at their most cruel/sociopathic.
