Allow me to do a defense of The Blair Witch Project. I say this as someone who normally HATES found footage movies, but has this is an exception. I think the movie works because of its hyper-realism. It's about three people getting lost in the woods, and that's exactly what we're watching. I think all of the actors do an excellent job of demonstrating the range of emotions you would feel in the same situation: exasperation and annoyance, hunger, uncomfortable laughter at your own desperation, anger at the world around you, etc. They're not "friends" or people who have a prior relationship. They got together to do this project. So they bicker, they fight, they blame. And then you stir fear into that emotional mix. Up until the ending in the abandoned house or discovering Josh's bloody tooth, there's nothing over the top in this movie. There's nothing approaching The Thing or The Exorcist. Instead, you have piles of rocks, bunches of sticks tied together, and weird noises in the darkness. Why would anything that mundane be scary? Because these people are lost and alone and can't explain it. A pile of rocks outside your tent? Who put them there and how did they sneek up on your camp? Weird stick figures tied up in the branches? Why would someone do that and are you trespassing in a place you shouldn't be? If you were in their same position, you'd be petrified for the same reason. You'd be confused and frightened because you have no logical answers or recourse to protect yourself. I'll add that this movie gives a good reason for it to be a found footage story. Most movies of this genre are stupid because they put people in situations where every rational person would put down their camera and don't even try to explain it. Whereas in The Blair Witch, Josh and Mike constantly hound Heather to put down the camera. It annoys them, they don't know why she's doing it, etc. But eventually we get an answer: being behind the camera, looking at the world through the lens, makes Heather feel like she's still in control and gives her a false sense of security from what's happening (ie being lost with no way out). That's a motivation that makes perfect sense for Heather's character and allows the whole movie to work because of it. The ending where we see Mike facing the wall, calling back to the story of how the child murderer would dispose of his victims, I think is a dramatic, and satisfying end to watching three people be in a tortured panic for an hour. Because that's the heart of the movie: watching three people be lost, scared, and confused. You want a big pay off? The pay off is the journey and lead-up. It's a movie about atmosphere, not witches or grand climaxes. It's a horror movie because we're watching their horror, knowing we'd feel the same way in their shoes. I think it does an excellent job. ALTERNATE THEORY: Dawn I'm including this just for you because it may improve your opinion of The Blair Witch lol. You could interpret this as Josh and Mike fucking around with Heather in a conspiracy to bring her out in the woods and kill her. Everything that happens is explainable if both guys are in on it. They set up the rock piles before Heather wakes up. They tie the sticks at night. They tense up a situation by saying they hear noises in the dark and making her believe something is there. They steal the map. And at the end, after pushing her to the breaking point of terror, they kill her. Why? Just for the enjoyment, who knows. I don't subscribe to this theory, but it aligns with the movie and involves men getting the better of an annoying woman so you may be sympathetic to it!

If anyone ever deserved an A+ for effort... but you backed it up with your thoughtful, eloquent analysis, too. Well-done, a model rebuttal. Thanks!🏆 (And those final scenes in the house were just about worth the price of admission, like a coaster that meanders & Iulls you until a savage final, almost vertical drop)
