This movie kicked off the modern "found footage" craze, although it wasn't the first of its kind.

Think of all the great films made in the history of movies. And all the classic expertly made horror films. Great horror films going back to the silent era starring the likes of legendary actors as Lon Chaney. The great iconoclast horror directors who came up in the 70s and 80s. All those great films, all those captivating directors, pushed to the side so you could watch The Blair Witch Project… If Scary Movie doesn’t make you fall out of your chair laughing, then it wasn’t worth it. And I think you’re giving too much credit to these filmmakers of BWP. Generally the main character of a movie is meant to be likable and sympathetic. You’re supposed to be rooting for the main character to get away not hoping the monster gets her because she’s so bloody annoying. LOL People love Jamie Lee Curtis’s character from the the Halloween movie. That this main female character in BWP was only grating and annoying, I don’t think was the intentions of the filmmakers. They were just hack storytellers. And that’s why no one involved with this movie ever went on to do anything significant again.
