I’ve been a big fan of the original Planet of the Apes series forever. And I will tell you, this movie is the worst of the original series. But the two sequels that follow, are strong, and quite bold. And by the time you get to the fifth film in the series, the way the story plays out actually helps elevate this film. So if you can look past the shortcomings of this particular sequel, I promise you will be rebooked.

I grew up with these movies, and I actually loved beneath the planet of the apes. But I am having such a laugh that you hated it. And I do see your point after all these years. Totally it’s a bat shit crazy movie. But if you didn’t like this one it really goes downhill from here. UGG I’m getting so annoyed That these movies haven’t aged well. Back in the day we didn’t have films like this like a couple so to see some thing like planet of the apes I’m in the make up was revolutionary and it’s time the story was like nothing we had ever heard of before. So yeah, there is a lot to be excited about in the story well Who knows maybe it was simpler times and we didn’t ask a lot out of the story. But I do promise you will not like the rest of these. But I will be so fascinated to discover that you do like them. This was such a great reaction. It gets refreshing, when we discover there’s things we really don’t like. Let’s face it. Most reactions are positive. So getting to see you turn your nose up at what I used to think was a classic. Yup, the second movie… What? Good fun. PS started to re-read Groucho‘s book of letters. 🥸

speaking of the ending of the first movie, have you seen Homer Simpson acting out the ending of the first movie? It's so hilarious when you know what he's doing 🙂

I admit this hasn’t aged well but I still like the Apes franchise. The problem was the very low budget allocated to make it. All five original "Planet of the Apes" movies were number one at the U.S. box office when released. "Beneath the Planet of the Apes" spent two weeks as the number one top-grossing film. Originally, the makeup designs for the mutant’s disfigurement were going to look more graphic. The designs were soon changed so as to appease the film censors.

Like a lot of people on YouTube are saying, the film's considerable flaws weren't that apparent when we first saw it as kids, which for me was when I was 8 years old, in 1970. I thought it was wonderful. The mutants were cool; I lived near New York City and recognized the destroyed landmarks, the reference to the city's annual summer festival and its tagline, "New York City is a Summer Festival”; and was amazed that they destroyed the planet at the end. I don’t think anything was that confusing to me back then – I think I understood that the mutants were the radiation damaged remnants of intelligent human society and that they’d developed telepathic powers. Of course, that was 53 years ago, so I may have had some help in sorting it all out from my parents or friends. It wasn’t until decades later that I learned of the film’s troubled history, including the budget limitations, and the reluctance of Charlton Heston to participate. If I’d first seen Beneath the Planet of the Apes as an adult, as you did, Dawn, I might have felt the same way. But it’s still a pretty cool movie to me and brings back fond 70s memories of waiting for the next sequels to come out, watching the short-lived TV series based on it, collecting the MEGO apes action figures, and spending an entire day at a movie theater seeing all five films in a row.

😂 I don't think so. Or if I did I wouldn't have known what it was supposed to be! Away to go look for it now 🤭
