Gather round everyone and check out what's in store for you next week. We're kicking things off with A Night at the Opera (another black and white movie ✅). It came third in the poll back in August, but a few people have mentioned I should watch it, so thank you to you all. I'm so glad I did.

Our joint winner of the HIT THE DECADE! poll, Alien, takes the middle spot before we round things off with Shawshank Redemption.

All three films were amazing. All totally different, but all incredible. Hope you enjoy.

You may have noticed in A Night at the Opera that after a joke or gag Groucho, or whoever, will take a beat before the next line. This is because the Marx Brothers started their career on stage, in vaudeville and on Broadway, and they knew that you have to hold for the laugh so the audience doesn't miss the next line. This can make their films seem a bit slow from time to time if you're watching alone. To really appreciate the Marx Brothers artistry, and technique, you should sometime watch one of their films in a theater with a full audience. When a large crowd is laughing at the jokes those brief pauses disappear into the laughter. For your next B&W comedy I suggest the 1959 "Some Like It Hot." It is widely considered one of the funniest films ever made, and in some critics' estimation the funniest. The Writers Guild of America ranked the film's screenplay the 9th greatest ever written. Set during prohibition, it was directed by the great Billy Wilder and stars Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon, and Tony Curtis (Jamie Lee Curtis's father). Although, perhaps you should meet Cary Grant first as there's a sub-plot in which a character does a Cary Grant impression. So maybe before Some Like It Hot you should watch "His Girl Friday" (1940). One of the best of the screwball comedies, it was directed by Howard Hawks and stars Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell. Also, it is in the public domain as the copyright was never renewed, so editing will be a breeze.

Let’s…just see if she likes THIS one, “Kay? I’m sure we were ready to recommend watching every other Kubrick film after Dr. Strangelove, but…. 🙄
