The US and Taiwan have a lot in common—both are democracies, both have rule of law, and both share a common enemy: China. Despite their similarities though, the US and Taiwan have had a fraught relationship. In this episode of China Unscripted, we take a deep look at the US-Taiwan relationship, explore the possibilities were the two countries to become closer, and reminisce about Taiwanese beef hotpot. Joining us in this episode is Ian Easton, the senior director at the Project 2049 Institute and author of The Chinese Invasion Threat: Taiwan's Defense and American Strategy in Asia. the point Ian mentions about US policy being based on wishful thinking and that China might change is precisely the same basis used for Britain trying to sell one country two systems as a justification for handing over Hong Kong, defending the idea that China would actually respect the 1984 treaty is actually a slap in the face to the people of Hong Kong.

Taiwan need to start a draft and buy actual guns for troops to train with. I know how important Taiwan is to us National security but if they’re not willing to put every able body into a uniform and give them excellent training then all the US is doing is spending American money and American lives to defend a nation that’s only semi serious about an imminent war
