It might be meant to imply that they're things he does for fun/leisure, with great joy, and something he takes a lot of pleasure in (aka a hobby) as opposed to how many people view them: Taking care of your family as a chore at worst and a simple obligation at best, and loving your spouse as something you just kind of...*do*.
