The Eighth Sense - Episodes 1-2.mp4

Cédric Bardoux

This series is already one of the best this year for me. It is not a BL, it is a gay series. Why ? Everything is made purposefully to noy be cliché. THe director is german, not korean and he knows precisely all the tropes and eludes them by showing them. To adress everything as fake in korean society is so bold. Calling someone hyung is stupid... when the mama notes one should not look away when drinking or use their two hands to pour, another stupid things... and it goes on and on... The touchy moment are not pause 20 seconds, the staring in the eyes is not pause 20 seconds... The cinematography with the camera a bit shaky also is a deaparture from BL... I was literally crying watching those two episodes. I am even expecting a tragic ending because everything is made for it.

This is the vibe I’m getting too. Feel like it might end up being tragic, because most often than not those beautiful series with cinematography and ambience like this ends up being powerful yet sad ones.

I don't know much about the director, but the prospect of this being a queer story rather than a bl is promising to me. I've been a fan of korean queer media for some time now. Although the comments you make about "fake" korean society or how the drinking culture or the hyung-dongsaeng thing don't ring true to me. Comments about hierarchy in korean society are everywhere in korean media, not just queer ones. But besides that these two episodes offered no such thing. The only obvert commentary was the importance on money and status in day to day life. But again you can find this in any type of media, Korean or otherwise.

I really liked this, I'm excited to see where this go. JaeWon needs better friends I don't like or trust that friend of his. EunJi needs to leave it alone and mind her business, JaeWon clearly is over her and is pretty indifferent to her. I want to know what the deal is with JaeWon's brother and family. And I want to know about JiHyun's background. I'm so excited for this

Wanitta D Belleh

Although I agree with you about how this is shot and how the director is dealing with troops(bl or otherwise) I do disagree with with a couple things First: the idea that if a bl is done well than it's not a bl, or that bl's aren't or shouldn't be included under "gay/queer series" does nothing to improve the industry. With all its troops and clichés it's still depicting stories that some "gay/queer" individuals relates to. Second: I don't necessarily see it has the director "addressing, everything as fake in Korean society". The idea that calling someone hyung is stupid is like saying calling someone big sis bigbro, P, nong, auntie is stupid. When infact different cultures have different ways of showing respect or addressing others(especally those that are older). I saw it rather as showing that often times comradery and circumstances creates familiarity that can elevate the need of hierarchy.

Every culture is different, to say it’s stupid because you don’t understand it is a sign of ignorance.

I'm really excited for it too! I have a feeling it's going to be one of my all-time faves once it's all done. 💖

Honestly the whole bl vs queer conversation is an interesting one. But I do think it's important to make a distinction. In Western media for example, just because a show has one or a few LGBTQ characters doesn't mean it's a queer show. For a show to be queer it can't just be about representation. Queer means it's political, it's social. It's also about the behind the scenes, as in who is writing this show, what audience was it written for. It has nothing to do with the quality of the media or how much I enjoy it. For example Bad Buddy is one of my favourite thai BLs and it has a few mentions of identity, but does just that: it simply mentions it. There are no explorations of identity on a deeper level.

I'm loving the series so far. It's interesting the director/screenwriter is German. Probably first for a KBL. The two have mad chemistry together. I hate that bitch ex-girlfriend. Come up ladies have some self-respect. Why beg? Yes his friends are awful

Charlotte garcia

The cinematography is so beautiful and the music vibe I like it! Ji and Jean’s chemistry is 🔥 I am so obsessed and invested in this bl. Can’t wait for next week

Wanitta D Belleh

I agree with the point about western(and even non western imo)media and the distinction between a show with just a few queer characters vs a queer show. Where you loose me is with the definition of what makes a show "queer". In my experience the queer is broad umbrella that means different things for many things for many people. Plus the distinction/reasons for why this is "is not a bl/ but a gay series" given in the post is different to the argument you are making .

And here you’ve got your heavy drama you love so much Tita Josie ). But I am afraid that it is going to be very far from a happy ending 🥲.

Nathan

Clearly, the sound of ambulance, Jae Won trying to pull Ji Hyun from the sea and after that sitting alone on the beach. And then it looked as if he was talking to a therapist or smth…omg 😢

Nathan

Omg, aren’t we spoiled by K dramas since the beginning of the year 🙀!?? And how about those indie vibes - it is clearly the indie series. Btw, there are two directors/screenwriters, not one. One is Korean, another one is German, that’s right - Baek Inu and Werner Du Plessis. They are both very very young. So while it is definitely very much a Korean show, I feel some Western sensitivities here, it’s a great mix. I like what they have created so far. Tita Josie, the song you liked from the first episode is "Who" by Wetter. Jae Won lives in Bangbae-dong, well hello, we were neighbours)). Yeah, he looks almost like a Mediterranean with his skin, you are right, I could take him for a Spanish guy, easily. The most important question- how do we prepare ourselves for a tragic ending …?🥲

Wanitta D Belleh

I was pretending I didn't see those and or hoping they have to do with his "brother" 😫😩😭

Ian Clabon

These two's visuals and their romantic chemistry, and the intimate no-frills vibe/style of this show are so compelling for me. It's captured everyone else too apparently lol. I do find it interesting though that some people are sensing this story is on a tragic path, but I don't feel that at all. It might not end on saccharine fanservicey fluff like a lot of other BLs, but it'll do a happy ending its own way. It's got such a sense of its own identity, this show, I feel. Credit to these directors.

Nathan

For those interested- from what I read - it seems that it is purely indie production. And it is both directors’ passion project - a drama that they made together not with the purpose of achieving financial success, but rather just to create a beautiful artistic story that “could move everyone's hearts”. So the goal was not the money but the art. So it is not backed by any major production company. However, I noticed from the credits that it is sponsored by Ikea, so I was wondering what there were going to advertise. Did Ikea start making surfing boards by any chance, without us noticing? 😀

Hi Tita Thanks for this one! I think you are right that this will be a member of my top 10 series list. You were right this has the feeling of being a movie with lots of character development. The jealous ex girlfriend---has to go---she is bad news from the first moment we saw her. I am anxious to see how this all works out.

TitaJosie

They've done an amazing job so far! I'd be happy regardless of whatever the ending ends up being. 💖

Nathan

😭😭😭 - me too…😢🙈😫😿. After this is over, promise you react to something funny, we will need some therapy I am afraid 😧

TitaJosie

I don't recall a series being this cinematic since I Told Sunset About You. That's high praise coming from me, lels. 🥰💖

Kenise Harvey

I agree with everything you said Tita Josie. I am not a fan of Eun Ji or Jae Wons friends. Also I agree it does feel very cinematic. I'm interested to see what Jae Won was gonna say about his little brother, did something happen to him and what were those ambulance sounds in episode 1 and who disappeared. This is a great start, I hope it stays this way.

Meredith Allred

Both main characters are so likable. I am looking forward to seeing their relationship develop.

EriX Ismael

It's not your ordinary 16min kinda bl for a change something longer for me...it's good for a change.

Craig White

There are many approaches to presenting stories that I appreciate, often ones that feel somewhat artificial — and as long as they do a good job within their genres, I am happy to climb on board. I don’t think I’ve been taken so quickly though, by a series that feels this real, in ages. It didn’t even take these first two episodes to complete for me to feel this way, I perked up with the striking opening titles, was intrigued to see a German name in with the Korean ones, and then was swept up within a couple of minutes by how utterly real this felt… and it’s only gotten more compelling with every new character and interaction. As I just said, I love a cleverly contrived story, but there hasn’t been a moment yet that feels like there’s been any contrivance at all, we just have these people whose lives we’ve just dropped in on, and we’re here for it because Ji Hyun, with his pen and sketch book by the Han River, is both so vulnerable and so promising, if he just gets the chance to bloom, he’ll be an all-time favourite character. Here is the shy, sweet, dazzled by it all country boy who’s got enough wherewithal to hold it together despite feeling inexorably drawn to something he’s always been denied until now, even if it scares him a bit… or a lot, probably, and this misunderstood idol Jae Won, even if we know less about him, seems like he just may be sensitive enough to entrust with Ji Hyun’s heart. I am already shookèd, as the crazy kids say. This one looks like it could rival I Told Sunset About You for me, if this quality is maintained! D’oh, now I’m dabbling in hyperbole… but man I am so invested already!
