This isn’t one of my favorite episodes. But starting to see their relationship dynamics. We got some bangers coming up

Angelina Sargent

I know I'm in the minority here but this was the episode I fell in love with Jin... there's also a really sad deleted scene with jin and hurley at the golf course hitting balls and loosing his mind with frustration because he doesn't understand anyone and doesn't feel like he can talk to anyone on the island. And they kind of show his perspective during the fight on the beach. You can hear what he hears when every one is yelling. It is really interesting to see how Jin got to where he is in their relationship. He only took the job because that was the only way he would be able to marry Sun with her dad's approval. He didn't even realize that the message he was supposed to send to the secretary dude was supposed to be violent until he saw the other guy pull out a gun to "deliver the message" and knew his family would see them murder the dad. And he comes home all bloody and frustrated because it doesn't seem like he wants his wife to know her dad is a gangster. I totally understand where Jin is coming from when you get his side of the story. It is so heart breaking.

I agree. Jin is one of my top 5 favorite characters in the show. Yes he doesn’t portray himself well at first but the more you learn and see in their story, the more he grows on you

Angelina, the way you describe Jin's frustrations with his inability to understand everyone is how I felt when I was in kindergarten, especially the first day of school. Even though I was born in the USA, up until that first day of school, my family and I primarily socialized with other Koreans. My parents talked to my siblings and me in Korean up until that point so that first day of kindergarten was very confusing and disorienting for me. Ironically, and sadly, I now only speak English and forgot most of my Korean, a fairly common occurrence among fellow Korean Americans of my generation, particularly if they were born here in the States or immigrated to the States when they were very young. Josie, that's a very traditional Korean thing that Jin's doing. Also, not sure why the creators of Lost named the character Jin, as Jin is primarily a Japanese name, but I digress

Oh wow I never noticed before that Hurley is on the TV that guy's daughter was watching! Good catch 👍

Angelina Sargent

Yeah that sounds really frustrating for anyone experiencing a language barrier...it's interesting you say that because the actor who played Jin had to have a language coach and worked with the actress a lot who played Sun because he didn't know or remember Korean when he started the show.

Ilsuk Yang

Yup! That's very common for Koreans growing up in the West. We all knew how to speak Korean when we were really young since we mostly hung out with other Koreans at the time. But, as we start going to school (especially back then when Koreans weren't as plentiful in the States as they are now), we hung out with people of other ethnicities (my brother and I were the usually the only Koreans in our school up until high school, then we saw too many Koreans 🤣😉), so we slowly started to lose our proficiency in Korean. I mainly learned how to speak English by watching American shows and movies (and reading Western books). My parents started speaking to us primarily in English with some Korean mixed in (or what we like to call "Konglish") right after my first day of Kindergarten.

I completely agree! I love seeing the different perspectives of the same scene and you also see how Jin got the puppy for Sun even though they could have done a better job with finding a dog that was more like the one in episode 5, that clearly isn't the same one, the one you see with Sun is much younger then that, lol. I love the scene with Jin and his father, he is so loving and it's very refreshing. Jack's dad wasn't the best, Sun's dad is awful, Sawyer's dad killed his mom and himself so not the best portrayals of father's in this show, lol.

Annie519

It's one of the best parts about the show is seeing how they are connected, like Hurley on the tv, Sawyer meeting Jack's dad.

Angelina Sargent

Haha yes it seems to be a running theme. I think I can think of one dad one this whole series who was actually a great dad and I can't mention it yet because it's a spoiler.
