"The beauty is within" is right! Listen, I love me a hottie, ok, but, if you're beautiful on the inside, you got me! Now, if I got you is the real question 🤣😭

I love The Rose Song SO much. There are several HSMTMTS songs that I downloaded as soon as I watched the episode and this is one of them. Those lyrics are gorgeous. Olivia apparently wrote that in 1 hour backstage and it was about what was happening with Josh. It was at this point that the writers were like yeah, we need to start seperating these characters lol. Notice how they were only in one small scene together in this episode. This is why dating your co-star is risky. 😂😂 I also loved seeing how Ashlyn helped convince Gina to stay. Gina is my favourite character too, she's most people's favourite from what I see. She's just so likeable. Gina and Ricky will always be my top two characters and my top ship from the show. Ricky is a bit of a "you love him or you hate him" sort of character. But as someone who also really struggles with change, I feel like I can relate to his anxiety and his frustration. And he really has gone through a lot in the past 2 seasons. 💕 I really look forward to the next episode. There's a little twist that I didn't see coming. 👀

I think the showrunner said it was always the plan to write Nini and Ricky as a high school romance and how you can drift apart at that age, he always intended for that even before the personal romance between Josh and Olivia happened. But I guess it was life imitating art here haha Nini and Ricky are so clearly on different paths here. Ricky is going through so many changes and wants to hold onto Nini way too tight and Nini wants to find her own purpose and way and is distancing herself from her relationship in a natural way. But I also think them getting back together at the last season finale was necessary, just to show them that it wasn't the lack of love that broke them apart but the different things they need from a relationship and life. Ricky needs to feel validated and safe, Nini needs to feel like herself and free to explore who that is and sadly those two realities are incompatible in this relationship. They both don't really see each other and are hanging onto something they've both clearly outgrown.

Oh yeah that was always the plan. But apparently they were going to write them drifting apart at the end of season 2 and they'd carry on the drama in season 3 with Ricky eventually ending up who he ends up with (trying not to spoil anything for Travis lol). But the real life issues between Olivia and Josh basically pushed their plans forward because they didn't even want to be in the same room as each other. 😂

Yes but I think this feels organic rn the way it’s written. I like Nini and Ricky, but they clearly are holding each other back.

Yeah you're right, the writers did a really good job making viewers fall out of love with their relationship after how well they built it up in season 1. It's clever how they did this. But all the relationships in this show switch every 5 minutes lol so shipping any couple is difficult.

Yeah but I think even in season 1 you could tell that the real problem wasn't that Ricky was unable to say I love you but that they don't really get each other as much as you should in a long-term-relationship. Nini didn't understand what it meant dropping the ily-bombshell on him (as in his fears regarding that) and he didn't understand why singing lead and coming out of her shell was so meaningful and important to her (hence him auditioning to win her back). We just couldn't see the issue bc they had so many cute moments and EJ was not that great of a boyfriend to Nini either. But rooting for Nini and Ricky as characters means you can't root for them to be stuck in this relationship that is clearly not giving either character what they truly need.

You're 100% spot on. Ricky and Nini just aren't meant to be. Nini knows what she wants to do with her life, she knows where she's going and she knows what she wants from a relationship. Whereas Ricky at this point is still struggling with everything going on with his family, has has no direction or plans for the future and he's confused on who he truly has romantic feelings for, he just doesn't realize that yet. And usually people who are on such different paths at a young age will never find a way back to each other and that's ok. I like that this was shown.

I'm kind of ambivalent towards Ricky. I relate to him, but, at times, I also forget he's even there. I'd say, for the first 2 seasons, Ashlyn and Red are my favorites, just 2 adorable, lovable, awkward goofballs with big hearts :)

Siobhan Linehan

I do love Ashlyn. Big Red is very sweet and Iove his relationship with Ashlyn but he's the one I find forgettable tbh. He never seems to be as involved in things as Ricky, EJ and Carlos are. But the beauty of a show with so many main characters is that everyone will see it in different ways. 🙂

i love all ur guys replies lol! i completely agree. it was definitely always the plan for these two to grow apart. i think the issue in their relationship is clearly shown in s1 ep 5. ricky in that episode starts to embrace change by moving on from nini and nini starts to enjoy independence and not wanting to live through a boys eyes. nini ends the ep singing an empowering song about individuality and ricky sees gina in a new light. however, they had to get back together so they could realize that its not the ily that separates them, its the incompatibility!

Siobhan Linehan

We love long chats about this show lol. And you're totally right. Ricky and Nini getting back together in season 1 was always just a plot point to prove how they're just not right for each other. They're not soulmates and that's ok, high school relationships rarely are. 👌
